SOUND OFF: Are You More or Less Likely To Vote Obama Following His Announcement on Gay Marriage?

Posted by Juan

What are your thoughts on Gay Marriage?

While Vice President Joe Biden probably deserves more of the credit for putting Gay Marriage on the National spotlight, President Obama certainly validated it.  In a political nipslip, Biden let the genie out of the bottle when he came out in support of the unconventional institution of marriage, a topic the president has been tip toeing around for the last year and a half.

But whether you believe the move was indeed an accident or calculated, the facts remains the issue divides the President’s two must-have groups.  Young voters strongly support gay marriage, while African Americans especially southern conservatives strongly oppose it.  Call it a game of political chicken but it seems to me the President is daring those black voters to abandon him in favor of Romney while fully embracing a growing and very vocal young pro-gay marriage minority.

But perhaps the issue is far simpler.  According to the Washington Post, one in six of Obama’s heavy donators is gay. While its a smart move in my opinion over what to me is a “non-issue” I wonder what type of long-term effect this could have on the party as the Gay Rights movement evolves in the future.  Its sure to infuriate the opposition whose Tea Party fracture groups will certainly have much to say come 2016.  So what do you think?  SOUND OFF: What do you think about Obama’s choice to support gay marriage and does it make him a better or worse candidate?

  1. jimmyt says:

I don’t care what a POTUS thinks about gay marriage, abortion, the second amendment or a host of other judicial matters he has no control over. I laugh at the people that think a POTUS can just make up laws or change ones with years old precedent on a whim. He is President not King (although sometimes I think he believes the reverse).

  2. gphi says:

I personally think that he’s jus’ SAYING that he supports gay marriage to get votes. PEACE!!!

  3. Malcolm says:

I think most people agree that the ONLY reason the Prez came out at this time in favor of gay marriage is because Biden made the jump first, and O was caught having to react.
    .
A more important sign that things are going to change quickly is an internal Republican memo which strongly suggests that the party modify its position on the subject.

    .
I’ll be the first to admit that my position on the subject took a 180 degree change a few years back when a close family member of mine came out. Where before I didn’t consider the issue much (since it had nothing to do with me), I have now come down hard in FAVOR of gay marriage rights. And here’s why…
    .
RIGHTS are not privileges, a gift given from the government. Rights exist independent of the government, and they exist whether or not anyone agrees or even wants to acknowledge them.
    .
When the black civil rights movement started, over 70% of the population was opposed to the idea of interracial marriage. Many of the strongest voices (all in the Democrat party by the way) pointed to minority rights as something that would eventually destroy the country and out ‘way of life’. They were wrong then, and those opposed to gay marriage now are just as wrong.
    .
At its heart, opposition to gay marriage is historically based on three factors: the biological need for pairing and the continuation of the species, the religious sacrament that codified this pairing, and the fact that most heterosexuals are kind of creeped out by the whole business.
    .
But here in America, the unpopularity of someone’s actions isn’t enough to make them illegal. And, from a constitutional standpoint, my (or your) religious beliefs are not a proper reason to bar the actions of others. Here in America, we have the right to be a Christian, or a Muslim, or a Jew… but we also have the right to be an atheist or an agnostic. My rights as a Christian do not allow me, for example, to ban people from practicing Islam. And none of our religious beliefs allow us to force our beliefs on those who do not willingly accept them.
    .
Like it or not, gay marriage WILL be a fact of life, and soon. In the case of the civil rights movement, it took the news broadcasting the horrors of Selma into everyones home to force the issue to the surface. And in this generation, the willingness of gay people to step out of the shadows has forced the issue to the surface.
    .
In the end, it is better to be on the right side of history. The democrats know this, the republicans know this; and sooner or later we will all know this.

  4. 2NA$$TEE says:

I 4 1 care if a Gay cpl wants 2 marry then cool let em suffer like man/woman do Lol.
The only thing I don’t like about the Gay issue is that it’s compared 2 the Civil Rights issues of the 1760′s to this very moment.I hope all Gays get the rights they deserve but do not compare a race struggle with a gay persons struggle not even close. If President Obama would have been a white male RepubliK.K.Klan he would be considered 1 of the best Presidents that changed the game. I also think he is just spitn ism 2 get votes. I will vote 4 u again Obeezee but please untuck ur tail this go around. I need your inner Malcolm X and Huey P. Newton 2 come out Huey b4 the drugs of course.

    • 2NA$$TEE says:

correction… I for 1 DO NOT CARE if Gay ppl want 2 marry…hell more women 4 me black ass.

      • jimmyt says:

So only men can be gay? You got to get out more.

        • 2NA$$TEE says:

Women are called Lesbians last I checked so once again ur on my dick when I thought we stopped this East Coast/West Coast beef.Correct those white boys when they come out of pocket talkn shit about President Obama oh I 4got u are 2 scared 2 even think of check’n em. Peace, Jimmy.

  5. B.E.B. says:

This is a tough topic for me. Because I really don’t know where I stand when it comes to gay marriage. I have no problem with gay or lesbian people at all. I have a few friends that are gay and they are good friends of mine. I guess because I was taught from childhood that being gay was against God’s will it does make me wonder if its wrong or not. I mean, I see nothing wrong with people being in love no matter who they are. But at the same time if it was meant to be, wouldn’t God have made it possible for 2 men to be able to conceive a child? Or 2 women? Obviously that isn’t possible but society tells you that they are ways around it to be able to have what is physically impossible. Either way, it doesn’t effect my voting decisions….mainly because I don’t vote. So there’s my opinion, I’m not saying I’m right but that just what goes through my mind.

  6. 2NA$$TEE says:

President Obama is will always be in a losing battle with any topic/subject concerning issues in AmeriKKKa. If he would have said he does not agree with Gay marriage then he would have been labeled. Evil and have no compassion for those whom just want 2 love each other regardless of sexual preference. Now since he is down 4 Gays 2 be married he is labeled by most as hell anything negative what have they not said about this President that hasn’t already been said.He can’t win either way on this subject and watch Gays turn on him when it’s election time.

  7. NTS5 says:

Well, put it this way through out his presidency he has worked on things like don’t ask don’t tell, Gay marriage and the likes. The only thing he hasn’t done was what he just did and actually say it (Even i am one that says action speaks louder than words and he has acted more than he spoke). So to me he saying it is not a big deal. As it stands why do I care what someone else does in there home. I expect them (gay people) not to have sex on the street like i expect straight one not to. And there have always been gay people since the begining of time. Let me ask you a question. If the one determianing factors between a male and a female at conception is a hormone Phenotypic Sex. And when it comes to Hermaphrodites they have two sperm that have fused with both the male and female chromosomes. (are they gay or straight). Up until i got into a relationship with a woman who had a son from a previous relationship that acted feminine at the age of 3( not saying he is gay or straight, i don’t care either way). Started to think about it. Should i not love him because he might or might not be gay? And should i not treat him the same as i treat others because he might or might not like other males? When it comes to people i can find many more things to grade under like Murder, Rape, genocide…… So in my mind if i raise a child to the best of my ability and he or she is a productive member of society why do i care if he like sleeping with guys in his home. What kind of God what would send a person to Hell just because he or she is Gay mostly by Gods design. I am not saying that agree or disagree (like it is really my choice) with someone being gay. I just feel that it is not business either way.

    • NTS5 says:

Back in the day one of my main arguments were “Animals didn’t do it” then with more research i found out that animals do do it. Damn ,MONKEYS…

Do i feel that being gay is the same as being Black. Not really. In the Last 100 years i don’t remember people being enslaved or hung based on the color of there gayness. But there are some similarities in haw they are being discriminated against.

  8. CHAMP415 says:

I honestly dont care for it, to each their own. The only thing I dont like is the all too common excuse of religion and what the good book says is right and wrong, STFU with that shit!. Marriage nowadays is becoming worthless, people end up married no longer than 3yrs, so if people want to marry someone of their same sex, do what you want. Prez Obama wether he’s sincere or not, at the end of the day he’s a politician.

  9. Mr. Bad Guy says:

Gay marriage is SOOOOOOOOOOO GAY!!!!! LOL!!!!!
    .
No, really. Yes, the only two reasons a poltician, any politician, says something is to reamain in power and to push an agenda.
    .
Am I voting for Obama? I am definitly not voting for Romney.

  10. E.L.Diaz says:

This was not a nipslip by Biden. It was a deliberate attempt to derail Pres. Obama’s re-election. Biden is the mole! He is looking at life after being VP, knowing that he will never be president and he is trying to set himself up for what comes next. And he is betting that Obama will be run out of town, so he is jumping ship now.

    • 2NA$$TEE says:

I never trusted Biden, I feel he is a closet RpubliKKKlan. Wanna be President but never will become 1.He reminds me of Lyndon B Johnson while he was VP under Kennedy and we all know how that went down.

  11. Malcolm says:

The NAACP is quoting me again. This time on this subject.

It’s been a while since I have been to this site, much less commented on a particular topic but I wanted to draw everyones attention to something. As a communtiy, a community representing HIPHOP culture I find it quite jaw dropping that we have come to a point where we can discuss a topic such as gay marriage without belittleing or passing judgement on people. Regardless of where you stand on the issue it’s indicative of how far HIPHOP has come. For us to even be discussing this topic in light of how HIPHOP can be portrayed as homophobic and misogynist is truley a testement to how far we’ve come.
