Captain Abandons Passengers in Crash

Posted by Malcolm

Not a red-letter day in the history of the sea

.
Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, fabulously wealthy member of the Vanderbilt family (and Great-Uncle of CNN anchor Anderson Cooper) was a passenger on the RMS Lusitania when it was torpedoed and sunk on May 7th, 1915.
.
After helping several passengers to the lifeboats, and unable to find a lifejacket for a woman holding a baby; Vanderbilt (who didn’t know how to swim) took off his own lifejacket and put it on the woman.
.
Alfred Vanderbilt, millionaire sportsman and loaf-about, went down with the ship, 18 minutes after it had been torpedoed. His courage facing death and assisting other passengers was witnessed by many.

.

.
And then we have Captain Schettino, captain of the ill-fated Costa Concordia which crashed into a rock and partially sank this week.
.
Instead of staying with his ship, Schettino and a group of his officers grabbed the first lifeboat they could find, and got the hell out of dodge.
.
Click HERE for an audio recording of the port authority ordering him to get back on board to rescue his passengers, and his seeming unwillingness to do so.

I saw this. My girl’s people have been trying to get me to go on a cruise for the longest and when I saw this on Friday I was like…and here’s my proof. They arrested the captain on the spot but I can’t say I blame him. He might be locked up but he’s alive.

I can’t believe your last two sentences. Captains of ships have responsibilities. He acted very selfishly and will face manslaughter charges. Even if he did nothing wrong (which he did) and it was a complete accident abandoning ship as a Captain will bring those and many more charges. He will soon wish he had carried out his duties.

I wish this dude would have went down with his ship. He went a whole hour of before saying anything. How many lives would he have saved if this punk ass would have stopped getting head and did his damn job?

But I agree my wife wants me to go on a cruise and i refuse and i am using this as one of the reasons. But my main reason is that no matter how bug a ship is the Ocean is bigger. LOL

I’d love to go on a cruise but those ships always have staph infections and the like with everybody getting sick and then there are incedents like this. Probably better ways to spend the money.

This settles it: I’m going hiking! lol

    • Malcolm says:

I can see the headline now. EL Diaz attacked by a bear while hiking.
      .
He could have been saved, but the park ranger was taking a vacation cruise.

Oh, I’m packing a 12 gauge! I’ve already mapped a piece of the Appalachian Trail, through the mountains in NC, that would take about a week to get through. My oldest son and I are going…hopefully this summer….Bears, mountain lions, inbred rednecks beware: I’m bringing da heat!!!
