Ohio Panel Upholds Ruling on ‘White Only’ Swimming Pool Sign
Landlord claimed she only posted it because black girls hair products cloud the pool. What say you RDC?
The Ohio Civil Rights Commission recently had to strike down an appeal launched by a Cincinnati landlord who posted a “White Only” sign on his apartment complex’s pool. The group found on Sept. 29 that Jamie Hein, who is white, violated the Ohio Civil Rights Act by posting the sign at a pool at the duplex where the teenage girl was visiting her parents. Obviously in shock, the parents filed a discrimination charge with the commission and moved out as to “avoid subjecting their family to further humiliating treatment.”
But get this, the landloard “claimed” his reasoning for posting the sign was that a black girl’s hair products clouded the swimming pool.
“I was trying to protect my assets,” she told the commission’s housing enforcement director in a Sept. 27 interview.
The sign was described as antique with the worlds “Selma, Ala.,” at the bottom, followed by the date “14 July 31.” Ahhh the keepsakes of discrimination rear their ugly head.
The girl’s father, Michael Gunn, who initially didn’t tell his daughter about the sign told the commission that she was saddened months later to learn the true reason they moved from the apartment complex.
