SOUND OFF: Is Barack Obama’s 2nd Term Campaign Doomed?

Posted by Juan

Could we be headed to electing a President that the Nation is in consensus that no one wants?

Presidential second terms have become more of the rule rather than the exception over the last quarter century.  Six of the last eight elected presidents have been re-elected to second terms with all but George H. W. Bush and Jimmy Carter failing to do so.  But the assumption that Barack Obama will coast to 4 more years is an inaccurate one.

When elected three years ago this week it was hard to believe that given his popularity across all races, ages and groups that his future could be in doubt.  But as I said at the time, he still is a politician and will be held accountable for the success of the country.  But its been an administration rough with the unexpected and ironic.  No one would have guessed that the man who once received a Nobel Peace Prize would be responsible for having captured both Osama Bin Laden and Momar Gadhafi under his watch.  So with those two major notches under his belt and as Malcolm points out, a Republican side that can’t get its head out of its ass one might assume this would be a cake walk.

In the words of Lee Corso, NOT SO FAST!  The debt-ceiling debates have truly crippled the Presidents already fragile approval rating.  The catastrophic midterm elections have left him with a House that is dead set on not giving an inch, refusing to play ball and not giving him any signature victories he can hang his hat on new November.

Is it time to go? Is there a better option?   Its clear its time for change but can we get that with a President who promised change in his initial campaign run.  His base is now pissed, frustrated and worse yet oblivious, the ever-important undecided swing voters are drifting and the Republicans and Tea Party smell blood.  In the midst of a poor economic climate its hard to believe that anyone would WANT a President to return that has (at least on the surface) spearheaded the doomed ship.

Is it all his fault?  No.  But as in sports is the same in politics. The figurehead always takes the blame and when its time for a change you usually start at the top.  With Obama’s approval rating hovering at around 48 percent his best strategy at this point may just be to hope and pray that everyone else messes it up and he’s the best of all bad options.

No, it’s not his fault, but he got stuck with cleaning up the last administration’s mess, I really feel bad for him when I think about it. Plus, it’s like you said Juan, the Republicans aren’t working WITH HIM, they’re working AGAINST HIM, it’s jus’ bad. PEACE!!!

By the way, if you read a bit more you might be able to post something that sounds intelligent instead of your poor grammar and illiterate babble.

You in the wrong blog calling people names, nath. We all grown here! Get the fuck outta here with that shit!

  3. Malcolm says:

You’re right, he may have a tough time.
    .
A few random thoughts about things that will help or hurt him.
    .
The so-called ‘super committee’ on the debt is due to release their findings soon. I’ve heard that these findings will include tax increases. Since both sides are represented in the committee, the republicans will lose their ability to say that they oppose all taxes, which will help Obama.
    .
The repubs always vote repub. The dems always vote dem. Obama won last time because he was able to grab the middle. Unless the economy gets better real quick (which is doubtful) it’s going to hurt him.
    .
If the Solyndra scandal heats up again, or if there is another similar scandal, it will hurt Obama.
    .
Killing Bin Laden and Kadaffi would have helped if it had happened the day before the election, but as Bush 1 proved, people forget quickly.
    .
And again (and to repeat others), he needs to toughen up. I know he’s the reasonable one in the room most of the time, but he needs to throw an elbow now and then.

  4. Mr. Bad Guy says:

I have to see who wins the Republican Primaries to answer this question. You never know, he may be up against Bachmann…. doubt it, but stranger things have happened.

  5. E.L.Diaz says:

The Republican Party is so morally corrupt that they cannot find anyone whose dirty laundry isn’t all out for the world to see! And of course, this is a two-horse race…so Pres. Obama will win again without much competition…..Should he? He is no worse than the last 40-something presidents!

  6. drewski says:

The most positive force in the re-election of Pres.Obama is the Republican Party itself. They have worked so tirelessly is blocking and stopping the Pres. that they have negelected in doing anything that promotes there own political ambitions. They have succeeded in being the party of “NO” and at the same time have excelled in being the party of “NOTHING”- as in have accomplished nothing, inspired nothing, produced nothing, improved nothing etc. All that has been initiated is an expanding spirit of division among the people. The worse part is that GOP supporters act like they don’t see or recognize the hurdles, obstacles and road blocks that the Republ. Party consistently keeps in place to prevent any progress from being attibuted to Pres.Obama- even at the expense of the American people that elected them.

  7. jimmyt says:

Folks always use the “mess the previous administration left” argument but it never flies. Obama could have kept a lot of his campaign promises without the help of the congress-critters simply by using his pen but he did not. Don’t be fooled. There will be plenty of ammo to use against him no matter who he runs against (and I include third party/independents) and it will be a very tough fight.
