SOUND OFF: Can ‘In Living Color’ Make A Comeback?

Posted by Juan

Will it regain the stage as Pop Culture’s iconic sketch comedy show?

By now you’ve all probably heard that our favorite sketch comedy show from our childhood “In Living Color” is making a return in celebration of Fox’s 25th anniversary in 2012.  The iconic show made stars out of then little known comedians, Jim Carrey, David Alan Grier and eventual Academy Award-winning actor Jamie Foxx as well as singer, actress and American Idol judge Jennifer Lopez, who was one of the “Fly Girls.”  Some would argue that Damon, Shawn, Kim, Marlon and Flex, all family of Keenen Ivory Wayans, the show’s co-creator/executive producer went on to fame but that probably depends on who you’d ask.

None the less, “In Living Color’s” legacy was solified in memorable skits like ”Homey D. Clown”, “Handi Man”, “Head Detective”, “Fire Marshall Bill” and “Men on Film” among others.

Quite a tough act to follow when you consider the extrodinary careers that the show launched and its solidified place in pop culture and Hip Hop lore.  Yet, FOX plans to test the waters with two half-hour specials sometime in the spring with the hopes of having In Living Color return as a full-fledged series next season once again featuring Keenen Ivory Wayans as host accompanied however with a whole new but young, up-and-coming cast of comedians.

Zach, Highbrid Nation since 2009 described his “fond memories” of the program.   “I remember when it changed from weekends to weeknights and all of the music video parodies,” he said. “One of my favorite sketches was the singing duo called “Cephus and Reesie” that was apparently based on Ashford and Simpson.”

Zack however admitted he was ”not sure if that kind of show can work some 20 years later.”  SOUND OFF: What do you think? Can “In Living Color” make a comeback?

Can lightning strike twice??? Hmmm…..a question to ponder. I just don’t know, sometimes you have to leave well enough alone. The show was very cutting edge and ahead of it’s time when it first showed up, but 20 years later, I dunno.

I think it will be even better this time just have 2 find that cast of talented ppl, all Living Color did and will do is keep up with the times of Pop Culture and what going on in PolitriKKKs etc . In Living was the Hip Hop version of SNF but with waaaaayyyyy more flavor. I am glad it’s coming back now there will be something on TV besides KKKorny ass UN real-ity shows about teen preg moms, house sluts of anytown USA, and of course CSI any city, now if Dave Chappelle can get off his lazy ass I would watch TV on a regular. “Don’t it a Come Back” …In Living Color.

LOL!!! Yeeeaahh, Cephus and Reesie was one of my favorites. Then there was the guys of “Funky Fingers Productions”, “Mr. McAfee” the school pricipal, and we can’t forget Jim Carrey as “Vera Demilo” and “Fire Marshall Bill”.

In my opinion ALOT of the Wayans Brothers (and sister) projects are untouchable. They are The Jacksons of Hollywood. From Keenan in “Low Down Dirty Shame”, Shawn And Marlon in “The Wayans Bros.” and Damon in “My Wife and Kids” are all classics in their own respects. I can’t see them falling too hard.

  4. Zach says:

Thanks for the shout out, JP!
When I saw the title, I immediately thought: “Did Juan read the blog I just wrote about this?” Lo and behold, you did. (Pause for using the phrase “Lo and behold”)

I’m really not sure about the come back, but I would love to see it. I would however like to see, if someone could follow the footsteps of the older cast members from back in the day. I always liked the Wayans Brothers, and I believe it could be a good one.
