Hip Hop’s Cornel West, Raheem DeVaughn ‘Occupy’ Prison

Posted by Juan

Is the Civil Rights 2.0 movement getting popping?

#Occupy @CornelWest @RaheemDeVaughn
The “Occupy” push has caught fire like Jordan in the NBA Finals.  The heat is turned way up on politicians to take this political movement serious. What started out as a group of rallies and protest on Wall street have spread throughout the country and around the globe.  And while we’ve been occupying “The Nation” for four years running, its good to see those conscious minded Hip Hoppers not just jumping out their Maybach’s and spectating but getting active and fighting for “the other 99%.”

Raheem DeVaughn joined Professor West and 17 others in getting taken into custody this week while protesting on the steps of the Supreme Court building in Washington, DC.  He and Prof.

“Dr. West had been invited to speak down at Freedom Plaza, where they’re occupying the land for their cause,” Devaughn told MTV News Monday evening.  “So after the speech, we proceeded to march and peacefully protest. We went down to the [Supreme Court] building and did what we had to do.”

DeVaughn admitted that the police officers treated Dr. West, himself and the other held individuals with respect despite being critical of the jail conditions.

“Everybody just embraced us and showed us a lot of love and applauded us for our efforts,” DeVaughn said of his fellow imprisoned protesters. “The place is so old. I learned so much about how the prison system works and it pretty much modern day slavery.”

West joined the protest in honor of the MLK memorial dedication ceremony.

“We will not let this day of Martin Luther King’s memorial go by without somebody being arrested,” West declared into a megaphone, as seen in a video captured of the event. “Because Martin King would be right here with us willing to throw down out of deep love!”.

Occupy Wall Street is spilling out on to Main Street.  Its not about politics or partisanship.  Its not even about Rich and Poor its about right and wrong.  Its about fair and foul.  The country for too long has been doing dirt in the dark and getting away with it.  I won’t get all the way gone on a soapbox but do recognize that this country’s perception is constantly skewed by the wishes of the media and powers that be.

Even the Tea Party is misguided into the thinking that we live in “Fair and Balanced” world and paying your fair share means you walk away with equal.  The Occupy Wall Street movement targeted the obvious.  The elite 1% in this country pull all the puppet strings.  What is not discussed is just how those puppet strings have distorted our view of each other, politics, healthcare and just how doing the right thing might just be the opposite of what you originally perceived it to be.  Read the masthead…Knowledge is Power.  Educate yourself.
