SOUND OFF: Are You Texting Too Much? Why Do You Prefer Text over Voice?

Posted by Juan

Are you above or below the National Text Average?

#SMS #texting
Are you one of the many Americans who have altogether stopped making phone calls and holding conversations 140 characters at a time via text message? People are driving while texting, riding their bike….while texting, crossing the street…while texting all very dangerous but still we’ve become so obsessed as a society we can’t help it.  Young and old everyone is addicted to text.

A recent study published by Pew Internet says more than 80 percent of American adults own cell phones and, of that percentage, 73 percent send texts and 31 percent of them actually enjoy texting rather than talking.  Why is that?  What is it about talking that is less attractive then trying to squeeze a complete thought into one small mobile phone window?

The study also revealed that the most frequent texters, aged 18 and 24 are now sending on average 3200 texts per month up from 2900 text messages just two years ago.  That’s an average of 110 texts messages sent and received DAILY! That’s 110 times you were distracted from your daily activities, 110 times you swerved into oncoming traffic to send an lol or ;-) , 110 times you hit your homeboy up to tell him you’re running late all because you spent too much time texting with your homegirl?

Remember this is JUST TEXTS.  Lets not even go into email, Facebook or Twitter.  By the way, I’ve always wondered why we’ve become so obsessed with text when we can just as easily send email without the constraints?  Hell everyone has a smartphone now most capable of receiving email.

Can’t stand it, don’t use it.

Whoa! You don’t use Text? You’re certainly the exception. Do you mind sharing how old you are?

      • jimmyt says:

Not at all, I’m 53 but before you start thinking I’m just not technically savvy or something, I am a very well educated\trained IT professional for a large health care corporation, very well paid with a highly sought after skill set. It’s just that most of my friends and relatives treat texting as some sort of game and just do it constantly about nothing but silly ass BS. I get enough of that from their chain e-mails.

I HATE texting! I thought it was cool to pass notes in grade school, but grown folk need to stop. I can’t count how many times somebody almost ran me off the road because they were texting. It has a definite advantage for quick messages, or asking questions and you know the person or you are too busy to hold a conversation. But having “conversations” via text is some real nigga shit(Boondocks Season 1)!

  3. CHAMP415 says:

It depends on who you’re texting or talking to, if its important, an actual voice convo is good, but if its just get to the point quick bullshit, a text does it all, those ackward moments of silence are a waste of time, a text solves that, even though a lot gets lost in translation sometimes through a text and besides, when you get older, you dont got time to fuck around and be on the phone for crazy hours, thats middle and high school shit.

I agree with jimmyt to a point. I make my bread and butter through wireless technology capacities, at this point of the game I find it a distruption to the flow of my day when my phone goes off. I cant remember the last time my phone was set to actually ring, usually vibrate. If I call someone its my Mom or my wife, responding to a voicemail left by someone (usually two days after the fact), or its a business call. I mostly text/ email people out of the state or out of the country, becuase I dont have to worry about their time difference and because it’s cheaper, if not free.
    .
To DaddeJ I do use “LOL” alot, up thats the extent of it. Several times I have had to ask my friends to retype their texts in plain english because with the Military, FCC, & FAA abbreviations running through my head it’s hard to keep track of it all.
    .
Most of my phone time is data usage from applications, informative email, and reading the news.

I have always used text…this goes back all the way to 1998 for me. When cellphones first boomed I hated having conversations in public, I hated hearing other people’s conversations in public. Especially “cellphone” conversations. Yes, you are on the bus, YES, you are almost there…those dumb ass convo’s that people have all loud for no real reason. A text was always better to send, it’s quieter and I’ve always gone that route. I don’t use text the way a lot of other people use it, I still talk when there is something to actually say but texting is the way to go to keep your stuff quiet.
