Sharpton to Lead D.C. March for Jobs Aug. 27 in Commemoration of Dr. King’s ‘Dream’
48 years after Dr. King’s “Dream” Captain African America and crew hope we don’t revert back to the days of segregation

Gotta gig? Or perhaps you’re one of the 15 million American’s unemployed. While that’s about 9% of all Americans that rate for people of color is disproportionately higher. Surprised? Of course not. But instead of excepting the norm, Captain African America Sharpton and his National Action Network (NAN) has teamed with activists in labor, education, civil rights, and clergy from across the country to organize a mass march demanding “jobs and justice” on Saturday, August 27, 2011.
The weekend long event coincides with the 48th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s ‘I Have a Dream Speech’ and the long awaited unveiling of the national King Memorial. Tom Joyner will be on hand along with Martin Luther King III, former NAACP President, Ben Jealous, Rickey Smiley and others. The goal of the event is to recognize the strides we’ve made as a people since Dr. King’s March on Washington but also realize that there’s so much more to do. NAN says they will use the occasion of August 27th to challenge those that seek to undo what Dr. King tried to do for working people and labor in this country.
“We are living in perhaps one of the most unpredictable and capricious times in our nation’s history,” Captain said. “While people of color and the traditionally marginalized are making enormous strides with access to places never even imaginable before, the working class and poor are still under attack in extraordinary and systematic ways. When the disenfranchised are further removed from the mainstream, the class divide between the haves and have not’s naturally increases. For those who may be quick to forget the legacy of Dr. King, let us remember that he died while fighting for worker’s rights and the basic human dignity of all.”
I Know I give Al Sharpton a hard time but its for this very reason. He’s involved in some very important programming but it often gets muddled with the silly publicity hoarding silliness he gets wrapped up with often. I’m going to try and rearrange my weekend plans and I hope you do as well. The rally preceding the march will begin at 12 (Noon) at Constitution Ave NW and 17th Street NW. The march will begin at 1:30pm to the King Memorial site on Ohio Drive, SW and West Basin Drive, SW.
FILED IN Need to Know, News

The wife, kids and I are trying to plan a day or weekend trip to DC to see the monument to MLK, hopefully before the summer is out. I definitly cant do it this weekend but, possibly Labor Day Weekend.
The pictures I’ve seen of it are pretty cool. I bet it will be awesome in person.
I can’t stand Rickey Smiley. His morning show here in Dallas is why I change the station. I’m sure outside of radio he’s a cool guy but on the radio he’s annoying to me. Lame ass skits, lame ass jokes, and one of the other radio personalities on his show does a sorry ass knockoff version of Jadakiss’ laugh. And he is definitely Captain African America’s sidekick without a doubt. As for MLK, I’m sure that monument is awesome in person. Hopefully one day I’ll get to visit and see it up close.
Now How about a Malcolm X memorial , Malcolm X never gets his due. I am happy Dr.King will be recognized and as 4 his “I have a dream speec”,blacks calling each other the N word, his name on streets that involve violence,African Americans killing each other over a look or Air Jordans, kids having babies in our community. No real leaders after 60′s,jail being the new college 4 Blackmen. I don’t think that is the dream MLK had in mind 4 his ppl.
Malcolm was too radical for America. Being a member of the racist and antisemetic Nation of Islam, the whole JFK “Chickens came home to roost” comment, and the picture at the window with the AK, were all too much for America. We would sooner seea Huey Newton and Bobby Seale national memorial.
Huey and Bobby got their idea from Malcolm X the Panthers came from his black nationalism.Chickens coming home 2 roost is the same as live by the gun die by the gun. Eye 4 an Eye etc. As 4 the AK IN THE WINDOW ppl were after him he was protecting his fam. I know u already know all of this just saying, yes he was a bit more radical but in this radical age we live in America xxxcuse me AmeriKKKa.We r is catching up 2 his way of thinking …almost so Y not show some love 2 the last brave brother besides Dr.King.
