[RANT] BET AWARDS – ‘Well that Was Awkward’…. ALL OF IT!
WE DA WORST!

#BETAWARDS (Photo Courtesy Just Jared.com)
So against my better judgement, I subjected myself to the foolishness that is the BET Awards. (Hmmm…let me correct myself. I have come to the revelation that most of what I used to enjoy like Hip Hop Awards and music videos no longer target individuals of my age group and dare I say intellect.) That being said, since when did the BET Awards turn into a junior high school talent show? The production quality was so peutrid it was laughable. So laughable I don’t know who to blame the artist or the producers because if you ask me everyone seemed totally unprepared like they were all last minute fill ins, shocked to be on stage in their first rodeo.
From Chris Brown to Rick Ross to Drake to…you name it they all sounded off key, outta synch, high, drunk and winging it. When did it become cool to not only rap but sing on top of the ACTUAL track, lead and backup vocals while on stage. Hell some of the artists just said eff it and lip-synched like we wouldn’t notice the Auto-Tune wasn’t part of their natural voice inflection. I mean in the first of Rick Ross’ what 12 performances, he was on stage for 30 seconds listening to a taped recording of Drake (Who was in the audience oh by the way) singing before he ever dropped a bar? Maybe that’s what Drake meant by “awkward”. And who told Ricky he looked sexy with his shirt off? Maybe they should have edited that instead of every other word of every rap song that was performed that night. Oh and can we retire DJ Khalid from “performing?” Dude is a DJ…that’s what those two letters mean in front of your name bro…go stand behind the turntables. You’re embarrassing yourself.
Then what happened to Cherrelle and Alexander O’Neal‘s teeth? Did someone slip up and forget to introduce them? Did they skip a step in the program? Oh no. They were probably so out the age group for the folks in the building to actually have a clue exactly who they were so they said screw it. Lets not bother. Speaking of out of the target age range…why bother giving Patti LaBelle the Lifetime Achievement Award? Yeah they were all standing…clapping but in their head they thought Shirley Ceasar was Glenda the Good Witch from the North and Patti was Tina Knowles.
Then what was up with the Viewers Choice Award announced by Nicki Minaj‘s “Biggest Fan”? Did that poor girl get set up or what? No one told her she needed to bring her glasses to read the teleprompter when the HTC Sprint Tablet malfunctioned. Naturally had there actually been a true rehearsal they would have been prepared. Now Chris Brown is tight, tearing up his dressing room because he once again has been linked with Rihanna in perhaps the most “awkward” TV moment since Kanye’s “Bush Doesn’t Like Black People” line. I don’t think I would have ever said this but Thank God for Drake? He summed up the entire night for me in a line that I need to copyright and put on a T-Shirt “Well that was awkward.”
Good to see Wiz Khalifa beat out Willow Smith for Best New Artist despite not being a new artist and really only having one single albeit the most played out hottest track of the year. And speaking of Willow, she was involved in perhaps the wackest moment of the night. I was rubbing my hands together when I saw that both Willow and her brother Jaden Smith were BOTH nominated in the category of “Best Young Star”. But instead of BET ruffling the Royal Smith Family feathers they took the “booo” road and called it a tie. TIE?! There are no ties in award shows. C’mon Son! If you wanted to go that way you might as well have given Justin Beiber the award. Mega wack.
I feel embarrassed for BET, embarrassed for Hip Hop, embarrassed for Debra Lee, embarrassed for Bob Johnson and embarrassed for Black folk. We da Worst!

Juan you shouldn’t have watched it. All you seemed to have done is pissed yourself off…
LOL!
The only reason I watch BET now is for Everybody Hates Chris. Every year I watch the awards and make myself mad. But I figured out what it is. Since I’m not a LOYAL fan of any of the artist that performed I wasnt blinded by the fact that they were performing and caught every F*#k up on stage. The skits were somewhat funny, but Nicki Minaj’s Fake fatty was the highlight of my night.
Yea Hip Hop awards are way better, but i thought Kevin was funny and the “real husbands of Hollywood” was funny…. overall the show was semi entertaining, Mary J and Alicia keys did they thing….
Jill Scott did her thing too….it seem like r&b artist always perform betta than da rappers on these shows
agreed although I was lil confused by Jill Scott a little. Just kinda came out of nowhere. I thought she was going to present an award at first.
The only good Part of that bullshit show was Real Husbands of Hollyweird which ironically only 2 were or are actual husbands . Kevin Hart was not married 2 a celeb. Bobby Bown and Nick Cannon r the only 1z who were or are actually married 2 a celeb.Nelly was not Jermaine Dupri was not either. Boyfriend and girlfriend don’t count. I hope all these BET shows get cancelled soon which are all owned by Viacom which is MTV,CMT,Nickelodeon,BET(Buffoon Entertainment Television) . Now I can hardly wait for the 2011 Hip Hop music awards in Oct.Hell Yea!!Mary J Blige came out looking hella sexxxythyck tho.Just FYI c what drugs do 2 your teeth Alexander O’Neal should had some “no ppl” on his team.He should have went had a dentist Sunday, Mon,Tues, Wed, Thurs,Fri, Sat Love. They need 2 have a 30 and over awards show or call it Grown Ass Ppl Awards show. I guess they are going after the demographics and age group they can brainwash the best.
The whole thing was rather stupid because it wasn’t a spoof of The real Housewives but rather the Basketball wives which also aren’t often wives but ex-fiances and girlfriends, baby mommas and jumpoffs, which makes you wonder why we even watch.
Alexander O’Neil also looked drunk as hell. Cherelle looked as though she was trying to get her groove back, cause she was NOT dressed appropriately. @Juan…as far as that dumb as show and others like it. I refuse to watch black reality television. I can walk down a block in the hood and see ignorant nigga!! I’d rather watch the white people act and be portrayed as idiots for a change. Way too many black women looking scankish and uneducated!!
It was an OK show to me, Trey Songz & Kelly Rowland did their thing to me. Kevin Hart was OK, depending on who he was talking about. PEACE!!!
I quit watching BET years ago…That whole network is f’d up.
Which might make you the the Smartest member of the Nation.
uh… except for the fact that the user name is ‘DooDoo’…
LMAO! Sorry that was funny!
DooDoo is my fight name. John “DooDoo” Brown. The coolest nickname in MMA. I’m the Sh** Poet.
I refused to watch that ish for all the reasons you mentioned, Juan.
Didn’t expect you too. We’ve had that conversation before. I got caught up. Kicking myself. Figured at very least it’d give us something to talk about.
I think we expect to much, at the end of the day its all entertainment, they cannot please every single viewer, plus this is America, we always got something negative to say…..
Its too much to expect that the show be run without errors and gaffs? If its going to be sloppy at least it should be entertaining. In my mind it was neither.
yea agree about the errors… production was sloppy…..
We have met the enemy…….and he is us
COSIGN W/ALL U DUDES, I CHECKED IN 2 CATCH A KOO GLIMPSE OF NICKI’S CAKES N CHKD OUT, SHIT AINT THE SAME ANYMORE…….
I thought it was just me, and I’m just getting too old to watch stuff like this. Wifey and I don’t even watch them live. We just tivo them and fast forward to our favorite performers. However, half the time we don’t even know who most of the nominees are. Rappers really shouldn’t perform on award shows. All they do is walk around back and forth and most of the song is a series of bleeps from the censors–where is the entertainment value in that?
I didn’t watch it because BET and its award shows suck and so do the people that run it!! The only thing I like about the HipHop awards is The Cypher. BET has been banned in my house for a minute now!! My son has tried to convince me to let him watch Freestyle Friday but I said F that and put him onto Grindtime and King of the Dot.
RIP Marvin Locke (He put me on to The Nation)
I didn’t watch this mess either but, I see that the best thing on the bet awards was the scene with free looking like a true dime in that dress.
COSIGN 100%, FREE WAS LOOKIN SUPER DELICIOUS!!!!!!!!, THE BACK SHOT OF THE CAKES WAS ON POINT!!!!!!
I don’t know why but I am entertained by disasters, so I was into the show. The production was awful and it did look like they put the show together on the fly but they had the main acts show up.
wow is this what the BET awards have turned into? damn what a way to make black people look bad.
