Say It Aint So: Reggae Legend, Buju Banton Get 10 Years For Drug Trafficing

Posted by Juan

Gotta throw D lighter pon d air fi dis one

#Buju
Reggae legend, Buju Banton received a 10 year prison sentence Thursday stemming from a conviction on possession and intent to distribute cocaine.

Buju, born Mark Anthony Myrie was arrested in 2009 by after attempting to buy over five kilos of cocaine from an undercover officer in Sarasota, Florida.

While last September, Buju’s team scored a victory after a mistrial was announced on the more severe charges he still was found guilty of the lesser intent to distribute charge and three others.  Buju has always claimed he was set up by law enforcement’s Hip Hop Reggae Police.

“The facts and circumstances of the confidential sources’ contacts with Mr. Myrie display a deliberate effort by a paid informant to ensnare a perfect stranger, who happened to be sitting next to him on an international flight, into committing a crime, thereby ensuring the informant more money,” said his lawyers.

“The confidential source is a paid government informant. In addition to refusing to disclose the identity, the government has refused to identify the prior cases in which he has been involved, the outcomes of those cases, the amount of money he has earned making cases for the government, or even the amount he has been paid (or expects to be paid) in this case.”

As a youngin, I can remember Buju tracks exemplifying certain stages of my youth and young adulthood. For those that aren’t as familiar this is the equivalent of  KRS-ONE getting a ten year bid.  While, I don’t claim to be the biggest Reggae / Dancehall head, Buju was one of those artists that I could relate to (and yes, understand.)  Yeah there were his more commercial hits like Champion and his anti-gay anthem Boom Bye-Bye (and a Batiboy Dead) but it was more so tracks like Destiny and Love Sponge that take me back.  Here’s a few of my favorites.

I’m not going as far as the homie dewayne, and saying he is the best Reggae artist ever, because there once was a man by the name of Bob Marley. Maybe you heard of him?
    .
But, with me not being a total Reggae head Buju’s Til Shiloh is on the ipod along with Bob Marley and the Wailers: Gold, Bob Marley: Legend, Super Cat: Ghetto Red Hot, Barrington Levy: Too Experienced, and a little Burning Spear and Gregory Isaacs… These are the musical staples.

Yeah Man, Bob Marley did all that. Get the two albums I listed above: Bob Marley & The Wailers: Gold & Bob Marley: Legend. You wont be disappointed.

        • dewayne says:
