How 2Pac Keeps Out Earning Today’s Hop Hop Artists From The Grave
Hip Hop 2.0 is no match for the Tupac Mythology

#Tupac #2Pac @zogblog @forbes
Its been almost 20 years since Tupac Shakur was murdered in Los Vegas yet his legend lives on through those of our generation that love his music and the message he preached. Although today’s Hip Hoppers likely were too young or not yet born to remember the man, the 2Pac mythology has permiated the culture even today. So much so that today’s entertainers are still keeping up…financially.
Last year alone, Pac’s estate raked in an estimated $3.5 million last year according to Zack O’Malley Greenberg for Forbes Magazine. Of the over 75 million Tupac records sold, the vast majority of those sales came after his death including seven of his 11 platinum albums. As recently as 2007 2Pac’s estate made more money ($9 million) than either Eminem or 50 Cent made last year.
The Tupac vaults consist over over 153 still unreleased material waiting to be unleashed on cult-following fans. But as Greenberg points out its the Pac merchandise that has his family still eating. Makaveli-branded sneakers, t-shirts and sweaters helped contribute to his status as one of the top 20 earners every year since his death. While Tupac is no MJ ($275 million in 2010), its clear his posthumous lore is growing and with his biopic slated to start filming this summer his legend will only grow strong.
I’ve always been a Biggie cat myself being from Brooklyn but you gotta hand it to that man 2Pac. No one will be ever compare to the work this man did from the grave.
