SOUND OFF: To FAT BACK or NOT to FAT BACK
Is it time we retire the Fat Back Award?
As many of you might have noticed there’s been something missing from the Nation over the last week and a half. Our esteemed Asset Connoisseur, Fat Back Chef has been busy preparing for final exams and has taken some time off. Over the year’s the FAT BACK Award has turned into a staple of Highbrid Nation. It, in large part, is what makes us unique to other blogs in that we have never pretended that grown professional men can’t have intelligent conversations all while still enjoying the taboo aspects of life.
The stats don’t lie. Over the last two weeks, traffic is down 30% and I would imagine will continue to decrease during Chef’s hiatus. But recently, and more so since Chef asked for some time off, I’ve begun to think if we should retire the award. Chef and I have had this coversation and I personally am conflicted. For one, its worn off its pizzaz as other sites have followed suit and copied our style with weak imitations. Its lost a bit of its luster. Hell, even the quality of models have fallen of to a great extent. Just ask Bria why she stopped shooting.
Secondly, as a man of God, great faith and principal whose grown spiritually over the years I wonder what message it sends. On the other hand, contradictions are reality. Accepting and flaunting them are what make us…real, what make us Highbrid Nation. But I wonder if its begun to overpower the message we’re trying to and need to convey as leaders of our generation.
We’ve all become a family. One I am very proud to be a part of. I have always welcomed your opinions and even when we don’t agree, which happens often, we are successful in sparking debate about issues. I feel this is just as much as important an issue for us to discuss as any political one. So what say you Nation? SOUND OFF: Is it time we retire the Fat Back Award?

ummm hell no, i think it makes this site what it is, of course the topics and debates you(juan) bring to the table is as important, but you need the fat backs…. maybe slim down on how many you post a week…. but you can’t just get rid of something that puts a smile on my face while looking at these flat booty’s in my office all day….. chef we missin you…

Had to chime in on this one. Must keep Fatback. Yes, the quality of models has fallen off. Yes, there are imitations out there. The reason why is that the demand for “urban” models has risen. None of these whack chicks or sites would even be out there if we weren’t looking for it in the first place.
Maybe just need to refine the Award into something pure. For starters, I dont think anyone cares for the tons of airbrushed, photoshopped, fake ass fatback pics. We like that natural, fatback in da wild. How ’bout takin this op to get back to the roots?
I vote No. I’ve noticed that there hasn’t been alot of FAT BACK AWARDS posted but that hasn’t stopped me from coming to the site Juan. I still come here everyday. Every morning when I get to work, while I’m at lunch, when work is slow, and when I’m at home. I get on this site daily and I will not stop even if you do decide to retire the FAT BACK AWARD. Being that you are a man of God, I would completely understand if you were to choose to do so. If that were to happen, do you think you could bring back the CUTIE PIE? I haven’t seen one of those in a very long time! And I think you would probably feel better knowing its not just a piece of ass you’re posting on HN. It would be a beautiful face for us to admire and not lust for. LOL! I don’t know, just a thought…

Yes good point- less airbrush! Maybe take more user submissions or something to keep it unique. And Milk Mondays are off the chain. Maybe make more themes like Latin/ chocolate/ mulatto etc. But don’t dont cold turkey us!
Fatback is the only reason I come here. I stay for some of the articles, but Fatback is what brings me back.
I’m not a fat back fan myself (I’m more of a no-back type), but I think the people have spoken and you need to keep it.

However, just a few suggestions…
.
First… we’ll occasionally have days where Chef has had a 3-martini lunch, and we’re given 5 or 6 columns at a time. Instead of dumping them all on the site at the same time, let them out slowly; it will keep the content on-hand for you, and fewer posts will force your readers to appreciate them more.

Maybe have it as a regular post on the same day every week. The web site Post Secret, for example, releases new secrets on Sunday morning. I have to imagine that their web site gets nearly all their hits on that day, since people only need to view the site once per week on the new-release day.
.
So if you picked a single day and did all of your fat back posts on that day,(‘fat back Friday’ I assume), you could build hit counts on Friday as people come back for more, knowing that new FB always comes on Friday).

If you were then to come up with other weekly columns on the other days, you could build overall traffic by building up individual days of the week.

Next… I assume you have access to simple poll-taking widgets (like TMZ uses in their ‘who’d you rather series). Maybe put together a fat back competition. Post two women at the same time, vote on them, and eventually work your way up to the winner.

Retire the FatBack Award?!! WHAT?! The numbers don’t lie…even if you reduce the posts you still can’t stop it, it brings traffic to the website. It’s a staple and my favorite way to introduce new people to the site.
All of the posts highlight the desire to keep this aspect of your website just where it should be. You touched on this site being a reflection of “our” society and how we view things from our unique perspective. No matter how many sites imitate what you and chef do with the fat back posts, they cannot and will not be able to copy the “soul” of this site. For years we were told that there was something wrong with our appreciation of thick women with real curves, then just like everything else we love everybody started copying it, but missed the spirit of why. Our culture appreciates beauty in so many ways and the fat back award is an extension of our love for real women and the fact that as black men we love curves and hips. I agree that the airbrush has gotten outta control, and I agree wiht Malcolm’s suggestions. That being said do what you do Juan, I check this site everyday and will continue to do so as long as its here.
Retire the Fat Back and only bring it back on special occasions. As innovators it’s time to start a new trend for the other websites to try and steal. The Nation is the “Exception” not the norm.
Dont retire it, but keep it selective. Like you ssaid “the quality of model has gone down.” Maybe you can keep the “Milk Mondays” and maybe do a “Thick Thursday” or something so you’re not just throwing pictures of half naked women only out there that truly arent attractive.
Also, the model/entrepreneurs (not porn related) feature those w/ photos and business info.
That could still relay the proper “message” and allow for a little ogling as well.

Please keep the fat backs coming! Also let me say it is a misconception that only the black culture appreciates curvy women. I know many men of other races who greatly appreciate beautiful curvy women of all colors as a personal taste not as a copy cat phenomenon.c’mon if you like it you like it, these things cannot be faked.
I believe you can be a man of GOD while still appreciating what HE has given us. The curves on a woman is beauty to behold!!!!
Touching on a previous reply, maybe you should take it as a challenge to find the natural, non-photo shopped models. You know, the ones that are blessed regardless how they pose.
Keep the award, just raise the qualifications.
I’d be shocked to read that anyone agrees with retiring the Fat Back Award. That is something that should not even be discussed. Yes, this site is popular for other reasons as well, but let’s face it, you’d like to come look at the beautiful women as well. Speaking of retiring, you have might as well said all of the older FAT Backs would be taken down as well. And that’s just not right. DO NOT RETIRE THE FAT BACK AWARD. In fact, bring it back better than ever. Whoever doesn’t like it an just remove the site from their bookmarks lol

I’ve commented on a few articles over the past few months and though I’m a saved man myself, I can appreciate the beauty that the Fat Back column presents. HBN provides a perspective that’s near and dear to many hearts as you can see by the responses. This column provides that touch of sweetness to those often murky days of the routine and the mundane. Keep it real, keep it natural but KEEP IT!!
