Ice Cube Trades in His St. Ides For Coors Light

Posted by Juan

Signs on with MillerCoors for a series of ads designed for crossover appeal to help the brand down Budweiser

If you’re a rapper over the age of 21 and not tied to some sort of alcoholic beverage you’re doing something wrong.  I mean think about it.  How sad is it that every artist from Diddy to Hov, Snoop Dogg to Ludacris, Pitbull to Jermaine Dupri they all have some sort of alcohol endorsement.  Why can’t they endorse the Kindle to encourage reading or laundry detergent…some thing a little less destructive.  Its a shame how Madison Avenue sees our people.  Anyway that’s a rant for another day.

One of the beer brands that became iconic for its Hip Hop credibility was St. Ides.  The West Coast rappers had it on smash with their mini music video commercials they created for the brand.  Leading that charge was Ice Cube.  But as the brand has shied away from that promotion tip in recent years Cube became free to explore other options.

According to Advertising Age, Mr. Oshea Jackson has reportedly signed on to endorse Coors Light beer.  In a fare more mainstream appealing campaign, produced by Commonground, a Chicago-based multi-cultural agency, Cube will challenge Coors Light bottles in a stare down to see who is colder.  Executives at the agency and MillerCoors hope the cross-over appeal will finally help them dethrone Anheuser-Busch’s Budweiser as the nation’s best-selling beer\

“Budweiser is going down, baby,” MillerCoors Chief Marketing Officer Andy England told AdAge.com.

I gotta respect the paper chase but its another “lighter in the air” moment commemorating an era gone bye.   We’ll miss those St. Ides ads but through the power of YouTube we can still relive the magic.

need not to promote that water (coors light) and get with the high life…. plus budweiser isn’t going anywhere… u know how many rednecks drink that stuff?… lol they are sworn by it

If rappers did promote positive things the the world would stop spinning and they could never go back to the hood, cause everybody in the “hood” loves to smoke weed, newports, kools, drink malt liquor and have unprotected sex. Reading and math are for “white folks” and sell outs….lol. But for real somebody needs to go Bill Cosby on these dudes and call em out on the bullshit they be on. We need some positive images that go beyond monetary success, and show african americans as the cultured refined people we are.
