HIGHBRID NATION REMEMBERS: Megatron, Murdered in Staten Island

Posted by Juan

Radio Personality, TV Host, Former Colleague…Gone way before his time

What’s up Nation.  I’m a little blown away right now to have logged on to my computer and being totally sidetracked by news that rising Radio star and a former collegue of mine, Megatron was murdered in Staten Island, NY. very early this morning.  The BET TV personality and former HOT 97 host born Corey McGriff, was  reportedly killed while walking to the store near his home in Staten Island.  Police say it was a gunshot wound to the chest, and no arrests have been made yet…of course.

Megatron was a mainstay on HOT 97 and a few other radio stations across the Northeast but was most visually known for his “What’s Good” segment on 106 & Park.

“Mega’s family is grateful for all of the condolences and warm thoughts of his fans and friends,” his manager Regg Rocc told E! News.  “Please continue to uplift your prayers of support as an ongoing investigation is currently being conducted by law enforcement officials.”

Let me stop here and say my condolences go out to my former HOT 97 family, Mega’s family and my cousin who I know was very close to Mega.  Hip Hop and violence ending deadly; there’s nothing new here but this is getting real old.  Old and stale.  Beef?  There’s always been beef but I remember when we used to settle it at 3:00PM in the school yard now you look at a cat wrong and shots ring out.  Half these dudes can’t even fight if it came down to it.  We always talk about what’s wrong about Hip Hop, hell black culture in general?  Well it boils down to stories just like this.  We, yes WE (because we all have to take responsibility) keep killing our youngest, hardest working stars way before their time.

    RIP, Another briother gone….
    .
Im sorry to say, and call me whatever you want, its reasons like this why as soon as I had a little money (and I do mean LITTLE) I left the hood… and seldom return. I’m not saying that this cant happen in any and every neighborhood, it just happens in certain neighborhoods more than others….

I read about this earlier this morning. Sad man, this is real sad. I actually read that it was a shot to the stomach but it doesn’t matter where he got shot. The outcome is still the same. I remember seeing him from time to time on 106 & Park, senseless killing. My condolences go out to his family, God Bless you during your loss. I hope and pray they find who killed him.

When I heard McGriff was killed, I was hurt. I grew up with him. Besides the TV and radio thing, he is the most soft-spoken person in the world. and I don’t just say that about anything. I remember running around as a kid in New Brighton with him and our cousins. This only reminds me of the murder of Sandy Brock. I wish his family the best and McGriff will be missed. I always told him that I’ll never call him Megatron but this time, I will. Mega, you’ll be missed by all of the New. From the stapleton fields to Jersey street in the New…you were one of the cool ones.

I agree Juan, whatever happened to the days of good old fashioned fist fighting. You could fist fight & nobody winded up dead. PEACE!!!

  5. Left-Eye says:

This wasn’t even about fighting. The newspaper said he was killed while trying to by weed. Come on, son. That’s nonsense. I don’t know if this is going to slide on the island. The last person who was killed over some BS, the killer was lucky the police got him because every neighborhood was looking for him. It was the most unified I’ve ever seen staten island (RIP Sandy Brock).
