SOUND OFF: Thoughts on Raekwon’s ‘Shaolin VS. Wu-Tang’? Hip Hop or Hip Pop?
First entry from our new columnist: Iron Lung

@raekwon
What’s up Nation. I told you we’ve been working on a few new things around here and I’m hoping you check out the new decor and be sure to give your feed back. As always, you know we keep it 100% all the time so positive or better yet negative we want to hear from you.
As you know between The Nation and Highbrid Outdoor, I haven’t been able to keep up with the music how I’d like so we hired a new member to the team to hold me down on that front. Nation…meet “Iron Lung”. Iron Lung…Nation. He’s a budding entreprenuer who loves skating and got crazy flavor as well keeps his finger on the pulse of what’s popping in the industry. I’m sure you’ll learn more along the way so I won’t steal his thunder. Let me know what you think.

Rae has been talking about this album for a little while now, this is his first album after the very highly anticipated Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2 that was competing on the billboard charts with Jay-Z’s radio hit Blueprint III album. I feel Rae really responded to what he saw the real fans of hip hop wanted, that griddy shaolin flow. This time around Raekwon decided to collab with some very interesting artists that range from the originals like Method Man, Inspectah Deck,Ghostface, Busta Ryhmes, and Nas to the newer hip hop generation Jim Jones, Rick Ross, and Lloyd Banks. With producers Erick Sermon,Evidence, Alchemist, Mathematics etc.. on the tracks they mastered the Wu sound with out even having RZA around. That in my eyes says a lot because real production combined with real rappers creates real music, and that’s what I’m all about…

Raekwon is one of those dudes that comes consistent with his lyrical game, next to Ghostface in my opinion he is one the best lyricists in Wu and continues to prove it. You hear a lot old cats talking shit about the new collaborations Raekwon has brought to the table but I support his effort in trying to reach out to the new generation and show em’ what the chefs still cooking. Now I’m also gunna stop myself right there and flat out say I’m not 100% a go with the whole Justin Bieber remix collaboration with Raekwon but I’ll look past that and see what hes putting on his albums and trying to sell to his fans. I give the man props hes been doing this own thing with H20/Icewater for a while now and raekwon is still delivering that real ish. If your a real Wu fan go out and support your man Raekwon and cop this album you won’t be disappointed. I rate this album Hip – Hop because even though a lot fans are criticizing his new collaborations he hasn’t completely sold his sole and I feel having a few young names on the roaster only gives the chef more radio play…

Is it coincidence that I am the first to respond?
First off…it’s a wrap. Call it Seran…if anyone can mess with this album, it’s coming from the Wu clan. Seriously…when I heard this album I said this “Ghost’s Apollo Kids is crack. Rae just crushed the crack and sniffed it…1 long inhalation. Another album you can listen to from beginning to end and not have to skip one track. This is like sugar kush with a fronto leaf. muy bien!
I was wondering what it would sound like myself, now me being a Wessst Coast ryda rep’n San Diego Cali4nia I am somewhat more n2 West Coast bang’rz, but the Wu r 1 of those Grown ass Hip Hop groups I respect and liked since the 36 Chambers joint, now N ur opinion is this better then the Meth,Rae, Ghost, collabo effort that came out awhile back ?
Way better.
yea i downloaded this album about a week ago, before listening to the album i didn’t think it would be much… after listening to the old chef and to his more recent work i was suspect on what he would do with this… but to my surprise chef is cookin again…. good shit
Definite banger…. 2 thumbs up.
I listen to very little rap, and actually purchase even less…. unless I have no doubt that I’m getting quality for my hard earned bucks. I have to pat myself on the back this month, I made three good album purchases. 1. Lupe Fiacso-LASERS 2. Reakwon – Shoalin vs Wu-Tang, & 3. Pharaohe Monch-WAR. These 3 albums should be the Hip-Hop buys of March…….. Mr. Bad Guy approved.
Welcome aboard Iron Lung….
Iron Lung! Welcome & congrats on the new gig! Look forward to your future posts. As for Raekwon, he’s doing his thing. Even though he’s got joints with new talent or currently hot rappers right now he is still showing these cats why he is the Chef! (No offense to the Fat Back Chef who serves us daily LMAO! Whats good son?) But Rae is still talented and still has that fire.
