[RANT] Against My Better Judgement…I Have to DEFEND Pant Sagging
Someone’s gotta stick up for Hip Hop’s HUMAN RIGHT of others to do stupid shit aka Freedom of Expression

A new bill passed Florida’s House of Reps made it law that students wearing pants below the waist are subject to disciplinary action. Even in public colleges. Florida has long been on the frontlines of the war against sagging. Lawmakers who sanctioned the bill say its good for maintaining the integrity of society.
“This pro-family, pro-education, pro-jobs bill provides each school district … adopt a student dress code of conduct, a policy that explains to each student their responsibility,” said Rep. Hazelle Rogers, who also introduced the measure. “This would make for a better school district and more productive students.”
Local NAACP chapters however disagree feeling that while pants do need to be raised, legislation enforcing penalties unfairly targets minorities. Quality point.
I think this is a great debate. While I personally think this whole sagging nonsense is stupid I do feel it should, to some extent be protected under individual’s rights to freedom of expression. It is this same type of expression that characterized the revolutionary Hip Hop (1.0) generation. Many of us are too close to the situation to realize we were these kids a generation ago. Our baggy gear, backwards hats, pants and ultra colorful clothing was just as repulsive to the outside world.
I feel inclined to defend sagging as stupid as the trend is especially in light of the recent move politicize the debate. Local Brooklyn (New York) Congressman and media whore, Eric Adams (D) recently launched “Stop The Sag” campaign which has garnered him tons of media attention propelling his popularity prompting him to initiate an all out assault on all things young, black and hip hop including a campaign welcoming parents to invade their children’s privacy in the name of saving them from the streets.
Bottom line is these aren’t the white folks that are enraged its our own people. More crabs in a barrel mentality. Instead of setting better examples and being more present in our kids lives we want to villanize them. So I’m going to play defense attorney for the ax murderer on this one. Someone’s gotta stick up THE RIGHTS of others to do stupid shit. True talk.

I never was one to sag my pants… but my 3 roommates in college who i shared a apartment with for 3 years did, every last one of them… very smart young brothers, doing well for themselves now…. In Pa we are going through some terrible times with our budget… they just cut education by 50%…. i think these state reps have more issues to deal with then how low a kids jeans are… i feel bad for the Fla kids…
I have to disagree with some parts and agree with others….. the law doesn’t Target minorities, those who are given the power to uphold the law will target minorities…. and if you don’t want to get targeted, at least in this case, then pull up your pants and stop advertising your ass for all to see. I do agree with auchamp22, there are a million more pressing issues politicians can be addressing, but as usual policy is usury focused on hype and shock value than real issues……..

Sagging is an idealistic notion of portraying masculinity emanating from prison culture. Freedom of expression is an intrinsic right especially for artists yet the future of the youth is at hand and we shouldn’t allow negative images perpetrate the sterotypes of blacks esp in Ame. We Afr/Carribean folks should understand/know better.
Actually, pants sagging in prison displayed the OPPOSITE of mascuinity. It meant you were “open for business” to the other men in the place.
I have a 16 y/o male and a 12y/o female and I do not allow sagging – and this goes for any of their friends that might be “hanging out” with us. I dont do it either. I dont make them wear their pants up to their nipples but I do make sure each style is worn properly. If we actually TAKE THE RESPONSIBILTY TO TEACH OUR OWN CHILDREN that they can be in style, and stylish w/o looking idiotic, Florida politicians might get bored enough to address some of the other issues out there.
Good point. The ignorance fades if we begin to take responsibility for what our children learn and imbibe into their minds. Yes, in prison culture men who sag are invitees for sexual involvement but hip-hop today promotes sagging as an emblem for masculinity. I’ve heard young women stipulate sagging as a criterion to date a young black boy.

Pants sagging or not sagging your pants doesnt determine how you move through or impact our society. It does give people black or white a preconcieved notion of you (really what they think you are or want you to be)as young and dumb. Which in many cases but not all is inacurate. No different than people seeing someone with glasses on and assuming they are smart. Your pants sagging, glasses, skinny jeans, pocket protector does have any affect on how i look at you. 5 minutes of convo with you will tho

I am 27 yr old son,a married father of 4, an Air Force vet. Who now works in Afghanistan. Who could care less what u do with your clothes as long as u can do whatever job or schooling you are suppose to be doing. People who sag im know what other people percieve of them just the same as people who dress in different yet equally unfashionable ways. but if u are about your business should it really matter. to me judging people based off their sagging or extra tight jeans in no different than looking at any white person and saying he gotta be rich cuz he white or assuming every black person been on welfare. prejudice, Pre judging does nobody any good. Feel free to sag people feel free to get tattooes on ur face but be prepared to work twice as hard on top of workin twice as hard just for being black if u are black and sag lol cuz every race in america has their sagging counter-parts
I do sag been doing it since i was 11 or 12, i was always told not so i just quit doin it in the house. I sagged at school (teacher will say i was one of the smartest students they had),sagged in my AF uniform ( my superiors will say i was one the smartest and hardest workers under them), sag now and my supervisor now quit sayin anything to me about it cuz i get the job done better and know more stuff and handle myself in a more professional manner the people who have been in my field 2 to 3 times as long is I have. So if the worst thing u can say or do is give off some preconcieved notion about me because i sag so be it, im gonna moving cuz i got shit do lmao

Bad Guy it cost me a promotion first time around, as i was marked down on my evals for uniform but it would be easier just to pull up your pants not get tatooes in places that doesn’t bold well for the boardroom but why change me to fit in with you (society). If your pants are so far down, you havta bend or lean over to get your hand inside your pants pockets- you are not saggin, you are draggin.If the waist of your jeans is under you a$$, you are draggin. Now on to the sagging…that shit is so stupid. I hate when I see the shape of a mans ass when they sag! Especially when they are wearing briefs! And why sag so low? I see cats all the time who have their pants literally right above their knees! They can’t even walk right! They look like they just took a shit in their pants and gotta walk like that to not spread the shit! lol…sagging is played out. I’ll admit I tried that when I was about 14 or 15 but I quit that shit real quick. It just doesn’t look good in my opinion. And as for the whole law about the issue, I can see how some may suggest it targets minorities but white people do that shit to. At the end of the day, I don’t care about that law because it doesn’t affect me. If you wanna sag, thats fine too but just know that it looks stupid. Grow up and get on your grown man shit. Imma tell you like my poppa told me “pull up your Got damn pants!” Seriously its not about “selling out” or conforming to society, its about representing yourself and your family in a way that is pleasing and respectful. If sagging has some sort of philosophical reasoning then fine. Their does come a time to get your grown man on, and put away childish things. I help coach youth sports and you wouldnt believe the number of young black men (ages 7,8,9 -12 years old) who already have their pants down under their asses…..learning by example. This is just one more thing we seem to be holding on to for no reason….every fashion has its time….let this one go…its hard to take somebody serious if they cant manage to dress themselves properly………just saying.
