SOUND OFF: Did The Knicks Give Up Too Much For Carmelo Anthony?

Posted by Juan

They mortgaged the future in exchange for the now!

Over the weekend basketball fans were treated to one of the pinnacle of professional sports All-Star games, the NBA All-Star Game.  While NHL fans would argue, there’s nothing like seeing all your favorite players skip any ounce of defense in exchange for high-flying antics on the way to triple digit scoring.  But this year, the special weekend was accented with a little treat for New York Knicks fans as it was announced Monday that Carmelo Anthony would be returning to the Empire State as the central cog in a 9 player deal with the Denver Nuggets.

While the deal potentially gives the New York Knicks the most explosive frontcourt in all of sports it does come at quite a bounty. None the less, the move combines Amar’e Stoudemire’s second ranked scoring (26.1 points per game) and Anthony’s sixth (25.2)  in exchange for promising studs Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov plus a 2014 first-round draft pick to the Nuggets.  To complete the deal the Knicks will replace PG Felton with an aging but veteran Chauncey Billups, Shelden Williams, Anthony Carter and former Knick, Renaldo Balkman. According to reports the Knicks will also give up two second-round selections that the Knicks acquired from Golden State.

To help clear cap room, The Knicks will reportedly ship early season bench standout, Anthony Randolph, the expiring contract of Eddy Curry and $3 million to the Timberwolves in exchange for Corey Brewer.

Quite a cost for a player that possibly could have been acquired in the offseason huh?  Rumor is that Knicks GM Donnie Walsh believed it was way too much but was overruled by team President, James Dolan.  According to reports the despite lead to Walsh’s resignation effective at year’s end.

First of all, that pic deserves a major PAUSE! Ha! Ha!

Yes, the Knicks gave up too much. It would have been smart to wait until the offseason because Melo basically made it known he wasn’t gonna go anywhere but New York. He wasn’t gonna sign an extension with the Nets or any other team.

They would be a stronger squad if they stayed with those players then added Melo. Not the other way around. I dont see them going past the first round of the playoffs but NY should be happy. People actually care about the Knicks now. Ha! Ha!

Now all they need is some good role players, a solid center and then sign Deron Williams or CP3.

What?! they have shot up there with Boston, Miami and Chicago now…Billups is better than Felton and Melo is better than Gallinari and Chandler combined! the big Russian? he was playing something like 14 minutes a game, or something…in the offseason, they can concentrate on solid complimentary players, while CP3/Williams play out the last year of their contracts. Then, he can replace Billups and it’s really on!

Major move for NY! What did they give up to get Melo….Felton/Chandler….both solid young players with good potential. Gallinari=Garbage. 7 footer that can’t rebound. He’s gonna get SMASHED in the West. NY gets Billups, a proven winner with a expiering ! Both teams made out on this deal. Denver will still compete in the west and NY will be in the top 4 next year. If Walsh can bring in CP3, Deron Williams….or D. Howard….OOHHHH….not even Mike Dantoni cann mess up with a roster like that!

  4. Jaypream says:

I don’t believe they gave up too much. Felton was only a 2 yr rental until Paul becomes available, the Russian will be a career back up center, and Gallo and Chandler combined don’t add up to Melo’s talent. They still need to address their defensive problems, but in the long room they’ll compete nicely in the east.
