I, We Owe Nicki Minaj an Apology For Writing Her Off as Hype

Posted by Juan

This week she surpassed 1 Million sold, became the 1st artist since 2005 to CLIMB to #1 and earned my respect

@NICKIMINAJ #PinkFriday
It was not more than 8 months ago that we were all sitting here chopping it up on a post I’d written entitled “Nicki Minaj Gets ‘Dolled Up’ For Blackmen Mag & Album Promo Shoot” where we debated Nicki Minaj’s true value.  The comments were ablaze with arguments that she was all hype, pink wig and thick ass.  At the time B.E.B. and Auchamp22 suggested that it was time for her to ride the wave and release an album because her 15 minutes of fame was expiring.  Well today, Nicki’s “Pink Friday” landed at #1 of the billboard charts unprecedented for a female rap artist.  Its amazing how quickly things change.

This was a big week all around for the album as the project not only surpassed the 1 million total sales mark according to SoundScan but reached the top of the Billboard 200 chart for the first time in its 11th week on the list.  No easy feat as Billboard points out.

“For the most part, an album is only No. 1 because it debuted there. It’s unusual for a set to climb to the top. Case in point: in 2010, there were 30 albums that hit No. 1, but just one — Lil Wayne’s “I Am Not A Human Being” — actually rose to the top.”

The last time this happened was way back in March 5, 2005, when Ray Charles’ “Genius Loves Company” posthumous album finally hit No. 1 in its 25th week.  While some might attribute Minaj’s 18% sales gain to her much talked about appearance on “Saturday Night Live” on Jan. 30 or viral celebrity groupie love from Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez, confessed fans, the truth is people are still buying the album after not buying it or choosing not to.  This could only mean one thing…its probably pretty good or at least her pub is.

So I think I may owe Nicki a little bit of an apology.  After copping Kanye’s album and witnessing her slaughter and annihilate the “Monster” track I realized she was much more than a banging body.  She actually has some skills.  I know you’re probably saying “Juan, come on you’re been on her jock since day one.”  True but for all the wrong reasons.  I never bought the album.  Although I’m unimpressed by some of the tracks I’ve heard on the radio, she’s earned my purchase which I will make at the completion of this post.  So on behalf of myself,  Highbrid Nation and those that doubted you Nicki, I apologize.

I never wrote her off. Don’t really care for her music but that ass?! World class!!!

  2. L says:

Thicker than a snicker but her album is still HOT GARBAGE

  3. Juan says:

Maybe I should rethink this hahahah.

  4. auchamp22 says:

LOL… i listened to the album… beats and production some of the best stuff put out in 2010… lyrics tho… thats another story… she did her thing on Monster but that was a feature…. lyrically she can’t do a whole song…. every song on the album has 1 or 2 horribles verses…. half the shit doesn’t make sense…. (she owes Em big for dropping some Gems on her albums) but people today don’t wanna hear lyrical shit anyway… so give big props to her PR and marketing manager…. she is everywhere, radio, tv, internet…. plus her main core of fans are female or guys who think they are female…. the straight hip hop fans don’t need her to say a thing…. we just wanna see that wagon…..

  5. Mr. Bad Guy says:

I look at Hip-Hop as a whole on a scale of longevity. How long can he keep up this pink wigs, fat ass, and funny face routine? Is her music something everyone can play and vibe with like Lauryn Hill, or even MC Lyte? No way!!!! These days anyone with a buzz hits that #1 spot and many wack ass rappers eventually sell a million albums. Talk to me when someone cares about her 3rd album. Until then…. Lupe Fiasco LASERS is Stores March 8th. No boootleg, no illegal download, straight preorder, then purchase…

I’m not apologizing, she’s still ALL HYPE. She climbed off buzz, her whole career is based and driven off of “new media”/media buzz. I’ll give her some props if she can do something after all this new stuff dies down. There is a reason why record companies find new artist constantly because it is easier to build up unknowns in the hype machine.

You guys do realize every step of the way we’ve been doubting this girl. She’s already done what no Female MC has done with her #1 album. At what point do we stop doubting her. Listen to me…I sound like her PR agent. Me of all people.

  7. B.E.B. says:

I’m just going to say this, I was impressed with Pink Friday. She did very well in my opinion. There’s a few bangers on there (did I just say that? lol) and I’ve said it before, she’s different. I love the fact that she is wacky with the lyrics. I thought she was going to be another femcee that fell off but shorty is holding her own. Props to her for that. Hopefully she can maintain the fame and stay on point with the talent and not let that big donk be who she is…..even though I love that big ass…shake it like you did on SNL’s Bride of Blackenstein lol!! Juan’s right though, she’s proven to be a heavy hitter…question is, will she hold the crown? Only time will tell

  8. Dutchmaster3005 says:

Her verse on “up all night” did it 4 me. We got the hawks I ain’t talkin bout the peach state.

  9. J'mo says:

I’m old school so I don’t like most of her music anyways. Yeah I’ll co-sign on her getting rid of the pick wigs, crazy faces and retarded clothes. I just wanna see her in a bikini or some jeans.

  10. Jaypream says:

Although I’m not a fan of her music, I respect her grind and ability to connect with her fan base.

  11. champ415 says:
