UPDATE: ITS OFFICIAL ‘Uncle Luke 4 Miami Mayor’ Reality Show Pending
They once said the Revolution would be televised but I’m not so sure this what they had in mind
UPDATE: Well its not a rumor anymore. Uncle Luke, excuse me…. Mr. Luther Campbell formerly of 2Live Crew has announced his candidacy for mayor of Miami. The regular Miami New Times columnist used his column this week to issue a very shameless plug and campaign pitch.
“I’ve thought about running for public office before, but someone would always end up talking me out of it, saying, ‘We have this good person here, he will do good for the community,’ so I always backed out,” he said. “But I’d end up frustrated because they didn’t do anything. I’d give them ideas and they would just tell me what they wanted to hear.
“I get in my car, ride around Liberty City, and everything looks the same as when I was in the neighborhood growing up,” he continued, detailing the factors that motivated him to run for mayor. “I see the same crimes in the same areas. Officers and residents are still getting killed in the community I grew up in. I go to a city like Atlanta that has sensible affordable housing, and no one is being murdered. I go to Miami International Airport and see the same construction that has been going on for like a hundred years. All of that frustrates the hell out of me. Why aren’t we getting it right in Miami-Dade? Why is our government only serving one set of people? That’s what is pushing me to run.”
Look has absolutely no experience and a very checkered ethical past….PERFECT! I’m sure he will do well.
You might remember a few months back we chopped it up about Luther Campbell being honored at VH1′s Hip Honors. At the time he was belly aching about being honored along with his group 2Live Crew claiming that he was much more than his days as a Fat Back connoisseur. It seems that in his maturity he’s trying to reinvent his brand fashioning himself as an intellectual.
Recently, Campbell signed to instruct high school football coach and now has announced he is considering a run for mayor Miami-Dade County, Florida. According to Campbell, he plans to run if the incumbent Carlos Alvarez is recalled as expected in an upcoming vote. But don’t get it twisted. The new and improved Mr. Campbell hasn’t left all the fun and games behind him. In his announcement on his blog, he revealed that he plans to welcome TV cameras along for the experience turning his campaign and hopeful tenure as mayor into a reality show citing that it would provide long needed transparency of what’s really going on in the office.
“Cameras are going to capture when some lobbyist comes to see me to lobby me on some [stuff] they want approved. The cameras are going to be rolling when a commissioner meets with me when I want to talk about the things we need to build for this community. The voters are going to know who is full of [stuff] and who isn’t if I am elected mayor.”
When asked about what he feels his chances are to win he was confident he would receive the support he needed.
“With Rick Scott winning the governor’s seat,” he mentioned, “I don’t see how I could lose.”
I’m not mad at Uncle Luke. I mean with politics a joke now can I expect him to do any worse than some of his would-be counterparts? Its all posturing and popularity. Celebrities getting elected and running their districts ragged. The fact that he wants to turn this all into a reality show is rather ironic and telling. Its that very culture that has programmed society to support those who we see on TV the most regardless of their previous qualifications to complete the job effectively. Somehow we’ve begun to believe that Snooki or Kim Kardashian are the products of hard work and dedication. Its all entertainment but its unfortunate that politics has becomes so too. Luke is an entertainer. Would he make a good mayor? Perhaps but wouldn’t the citizens of Miami be better served electing someone whose dedicated their life’s work and education to prepare for such position instead of someone who thinks it would be cool to show what job is like on TV? Just a thought.
FILED IN Need to Know, News, TV

He is out of his mind if he thinks, A: he is going to be on a ballot, B: any person trying to do anything in Miami, where money is involved, is going to allow cameras to film it. Things are just ridiculous now…and these entertainers have the cojones to try and run for public offices because dumb-ass people will actually vote for them! WTF??!!
Great point about the cameras in those important board meetings or those back end deals. You don’t win an election alone. You need supporters…supporters who are willing to allow their people to vote for you as long as you scratch their back when you hit the big house. That’s not something you want on camera unless you’re Carcetti.
You know how Kennedy won against Nixon….TV. Every woman wanted to be with Kennedy and every man wanted to be friends with Kennedy. So yes TV is a very powerful motivator for someone receiving power.
With that said Luke is very smart, look at his wife. Luke married an educated woman with a PhD which should give you an idea of the private man that Mr Campbell. You marry what you believe is who you really are — guys marrying hoes believe little of themselves/ guys marrying education thinks they are educated.
With the cameras following him he wil be able to change the image that some people might have of his past ways to realize that he is more that bottoms. If Reagan, Steve Austin, Arnold can take that TV image and cross over why not Luke?
But what do i know…I go to Miami for fun.
Of course there are other good examples like Former Knick, Bill Bradley and the lesser know Congressman Heath Schuler who of course flopped out of the NFL after a underwhelming QB career. There are some examples of stars doing well in politics.
