SOUND OFF: What Did You Think About The President’s Speech in Arizona?

Posted by Juan

Did he achieve his objective of Honoring the victims, supporting Congresswoman Giffords and condemning evil?

@BarackObama @Rep_Giffords

If you were like me you made sure to tune in for the President’s Speech last night at a memorial event for the victims of the tragic shooting in Arizona.  The speech entitled “Together We Thrive: Tucson and America” was designed to memorialize the victims, show support for Congresswoman Gabby Giffords who is fighting for her life in a Tucson Hospital and to end all the finger pointing.

I personally thought the speech was fabulous.  It took me back to the President that I voted for, who I will admit had fallen completely off my radar in recent months, not because of any wrong-doing but perhaps more because of apathy on my part.  If adjoining a nation and a fractured democratic process was his objective he couldn’t have done anymore to acheive it.  It was clear while memorializing the fallen at the end of his talk that he genuinely had to fight back tears to finish his remarks.  Thinking about the two young children he cares for must have been difficult as he remembered Christina Taylor Greene and the “rain puddles” he’s hoping she’s playing in while she looks down from heaven.

“I want us to live up to her expectations. I want our democracy to be as good as she imagined it. All of us – we should do everything we can to make sure this country lives up to our children’s expectations.”

While I viewed it favorable in my perhaps biased opinion there were of course “pundits” who fair or unfair thought the atmosphere was just a little to “roudy” in the same vain as a pep rally.  I can see that.  But is that the President’s fault our under the control of his team.  I think the objective was acheived in remembering the victims, honoring them, offering support for Giffords and condemning the evil both by the gun and those that would use this event for political gain.  But what do you think?  SOUND OFF: What did you think about the President’s remarks in Arizona last night?

  1. It’s amazing how everybody can comment on the Fat Backs, but not this speech. (SMDH) But you pretty much said it all, Juan. His speech was really a sermon. I felt the Holy Ghost (all jokes aside). But I think folks who criticize the cheering must have never been to a black funeral. We jump, holler, shout, run, foam at the mouth..you name it. Last night just proved that the Holy Ghost is not just a black thing–it’s a human thing.

You’re absolutely right about a black funeral. Its a celebration of life and God’s grace.

I said the same thing a few months back , we can comment on Lil Wayne and T.I. going in and out of jail deb8 if Nicki Manaj or however u spell her name has a fake ass or not . There are only like 7 comments on this topic as of now counting this 1 here.Yes President Obama gave a tearful speech what made it so loving is that it was from the heart ppl were feeling that. Be u Demon…crat or RpubliK.K.KLAN or no political association just being there as 1 Nation under God.This is what we should be about but this is the same feeling we had after 9/11 remember that time Juan, then it went back 2 being AmeriKKKa the Ugly.

Obama did his thing and this was one of his greatest moments thus far in his presidency. I’m very proud of our president and admire his growth these past few years.

I just wanted to say that last night’s speech was execellent and from the heart. The president took his time and honor the people who deserved to be honored and it was heartfelt. The Presidents speech made you wanna get up and clap and be thankful for the people that are in our lives and stop taking life for granted. Like the president says it doesn’t matter about status wealth or fame, what really matters is how much we love. It just seems as a people we only rally together when tragic events occur but after everything is clear and good again we forget about loving one another. Excellent speech as i said before. Just wanted to come by and comment since people think we only can comment on FAT BACKS.

Hey, there’s a time and place for everything right? Its like Common said a long time ago “What I can’t be righteous while drinking a beer?”

I really want what tricks those against President Obama will pull come election time 2012. Look at the positive change he has been able to come forward with…. While I dont agree with EVERYTHING he proposes, looking at what he has been able to do on a national scale he can’t be fucked with…..
    .
The Arizona speech has to definitly be one of those famous presidential speeches talked about in history lessons…

I read what someone from Fox said about President Obama’s speech. I listen to it twice.I knew He was going to knock this out the park.It felt like the President in 2008.I read in someone’s profile about you could feel the Holy Ghost in His speech and i tell you could. What was claping to them(white) is shouting to us at a funeral or memorial.President Obama speech hit on all areas. Remembering everyone that was affected. I remember talking to my mother about how i felt leaving a funeral.I felt guilty because i left feeling good, the spirit was high at the funeral, i couldn’t understand why i was feeling the way i was. Here someone had passed and the family was grieving. My mother told me it’s not the way you die, but the way you lived. Like in the words of Rick James IT’S A CELEBRATION!!!!!

And people wonder why this country will never come together…..SMH

One hell of a speech though glad he didnt turn it into a finger pointing session like Clinton did in Oklahoma.

Great speech! I hope everyone who listened/ will listen to President Obama’s speech truly hears what is being said. As a 19 yr active duty veteran (station in AZ) I agree with the President’s message that we all are responsible for contributing to a better society. Not all of us will be a member of the military, criminal justice system, politics or any other public service lifestyles (it is a lifestyle not a job) but no American is exempt from contributing. We must decide if we will be a positive or a negative influence in our communities. As he stated we control and decide how we will treat each other, and hopefully we can learn to treat each other as neighbors and friends. But as history has shown, we do better for awhile and then quickly return to our previous mentality. The vast majority convinces themselves that is someone else’s duty or job to fix our community problems. We are the greatest nation history has ever seen, but we still make mistakes and need to learn from them. We MUST remain that great nation for our future generations. We are responsible for teaching our children right from wrong and how to be a great nation through community service of one kind or another. The President stated that this tragedy has sparked a national conversation, what good is a conversation if no one is listening? I want to put my 2 cents in on the debate of gun control because at this very moment is a leading topic. The only weapon in the world is the human brain, everything we have conceived and made are only tools to do a job more efficiently. Long before guns we were killing each other with fists, rocks and sticks. So if Loughner would not have had access to a gun then he would have used his car, pipe bomb, baseball bat or whatever other “tool” he decided would work. My point being his brain was the weapon and once he decided that he was going to commit this tragic crime against humanity the weapon had already been used. We will never be able to stop the misuse of a tool, but it is possible to stop the use of the human brain as a weapon IF we all show our children how to be that great nation just as the President said in his speech. I hope we can remember the pain and destruction of this tragedy past next week and move forward and change what is in our hearts for one another.
