So check this out, after a huge year riding the coat tails of international weirdo sensation, Lady Gaga, your man Akon is really feeling himself.  During a recent trip to his native Senegal to perform at the World Festival of Black Arts, Akon hopped up on his soapbox and pleaded for African nations to unite in order to advance economically.

“Things like this actually create the environment for us to move together as one people. The more we realize what we can do together as a unit, the further we will get as an African nation,” he said during a press conference on Thursday.  “The one thing we always lack is unity, we always stay segregated. Even though Africa is one of the biggest continents, we never stay together as a people.”

Sounds good right?  Positive message.  Returning to the motherland, black fist the whole nine right?  Well…this is Hip Hop remember.  We can’t have any positivity without an underlying air of self-service.  In this case, Akon says eff it.  Why hide my true intention.

“The kind of money I am actually paid for a concert is nothing Senegal would really be able to afford. It’s about uplifting the people,” he explained.  “If I can get the economy up to where it needs to go in Senegal, then I can do freakin’ shows here all the time and get paid what I am worth.”

Nice!  So lets get this unity popping so next time I bring my black ass across the ocean I won’t have to do these shows for free.  Forget about the famine, genocide, AIDS that plagues the continent, lets instead focus on Akon’s paycheck.  Would we expect anything less?  Its 2011 and clearly nothing has changed.
