HIGHBRID NATION REMEMBERS: Teena Marie
The Motown Exception

Teena Marie, one of R&B’s most celebrated singer-songwriters was found dead Sunday. The 54-year-old artist born Mary Christine Brockert in Santa Monica, California was nominated four times for a Grammy Award. She was also a noted friend and protégé of the late Rick James. She was found dead in her California home by her daughter after apparently dying in her sleep. The sudden loss has sent shockwaves through the music community.
“Teena was a black voice trapped in a white body,” said Cathy Hughes, founder of Radio One, a broadcasting company that targets African-American and urban listeners. “I would always tell her that she was one of the greatest vocalists of our time.
IamDiddy: “R.I.P Teena Marie. God Bless. Damn I just saw her the other day.”
@maryjblige: “Rest in peace Teena Mari. My Love love for u is forever. In my heart she’s Tina, So rest in peace Tina, i love u. Every girl that grew up in the hood , with her compassion and Mercy is something we should all have 4 each other because that’s what love is…I’ll love u forever Tina Mari. Portuguese Love, Casanova Brown, Square Biz, I need your lovin, all of your music inspired me vocally as a child. Her songs I sang in the mirror with a hair brush. I’m so hurt.“Rest in peace Teena Marie,” Blige wrote. “My Love for u is forever.”
@Common “Teena and I are both Pisces and we believe that we’ve been here before. That’s why ‘De Ja Vu’ is my favorite song.”
I personally remember her very distinctive voice. It was so powerful. I don’ think I was alone in suffering shock when I first discovered that she was white. She will certainly be missed. One of the true “Artists” in the game.

1ST of RIP and many prayers 2 Lady T and her Family, friends, and Loyal fans . I remember hearing Square Biz when I was a real young. I remember her voice being so soulful well back then I said this black lady can really sing . Little did I know Teena Marie was a Vanilla sista that could SANG her ass off . I always said she was more known in the Black community than anywhere else she was not pop at all. I asked some1 last night a white woman has she ever heard of her and she said no never . Which proves my point, the truly talented singers the Luther’s the Teena’s the Gerald Leverts the Teddy P’s of the world really don’t get any shine u got these manufactered store bought singers that want 2 be naked on every video or dress flamboyant 2 get shine bcuz they have no talent . Teena Marie had mad talent and could play instruments . I looooove Fire and Desire , Lover Girl is just a monster 2 this day as well as Ohh La La La just 2 name a few . Further more Teena was real she actually grew up around black people and was always Down 4 the Brown she dated brothers and did not catch shit from sistuz . A truly innovative and beautiful lady who will be truly missed. Teena Marie aka Lady T and Rick James back 2getther now u know u in Trouble.
Teena Marie was 1 of my 1st vanilla crushes coming up besides Linda Carter and Daisy Duke .
