Kim VS. Nicki Old School VS. New School
It’s deeper than rap
Saturday I was speaking w/a lady friend of mine when she excitedly asked me “Did you here the new song with Lil Kim getting @ Nicki Minaj” I disgustingly replied “NO” she then proceeded to tell me how the song was “fire” and she was glad that Kim got at Nicki b/c she’s wack and disrespectful to Kim Blah Blah Blah. This insignificant “rap beef” between these two female Emcees got me to thinking of the age old battle between “Old school” and “New School” not just in rap but in our communities as a whole.
I went on to explain to my friend why I thought Lil Kim dissing Nicky was not only lame but completely wrong on Kim’s part and how it’s a microcosm of what’s wrong with Minorities as a whole the old crab in a barrel syndrome. Now that I’m basically in my 30’s I can reflect back on times as a young man when older individuals whether it be relatives, friends, or random people tried to stop my progress b/c they felt threatened or b/c I wasn’t paying homage to the groundwork they laid before me. I can honestly say that at times it hurt a bit b/c some of these people I really looked up to and I was probably trying to emulate things I had seen them do and be successful and at times wanted them to notice me so bad that I would go the extra mile to do so. I think that’s the case with Nicki and Kim.
Obviously Nicki is Kim 2.0 with the crazy wigs, tight clothes and the crew of weed smoking bandits behind her. Not to mention a loyal following of young female fans and males who’d like to make Nicki there girlfriend, all of the same feelings and hoopla that surrounded Kim when her and Junior Mafia was popular in the Mid-late 90’s. I feel as an elder in the game Kim should be embracing Nicki teaching her the ins and outs of the music business especially from a female perspective, who would be a better mentor to Nicki then Kim? Kim’s lawyer should be Nicki’s lawyer, Kim’s accountant Nicki’s accountant, Kim’s management Nicki’s management etc. Instead you have Kim making diss records when they should be making records together.
The problem is Kim isn’t where she wants or needs to be for the amount of time she’s been in this game. Derailment after derailment has her in a spot where she has to do Dancing with the Stars just to stay relevant. Kim had her time when she was white hot and what did she do with it? Now she looks up and there’s a younger hotter version of her on almost every single song on the Billboard rap top 10, and it scares her to death. She comes to the realization that her time is officially up and in a final act of desperation she throws out a weak diss track. I’m not saying that Nicki shouldn’t pay homage to those that came before her and made it possible for her to be on all those hit records, but if she doesn’t Lil Kim is supposed to be in a position where it doesn’t even matter.
There’s a definite disconnect between the older and younger generation in our communities. The older generation rarely reaches back and teaches the youngins the rules of the game and how to avoid the pitfalls. B/C there is no guidance the youngins go for broke and never pay homage to those that came before b/c no ones taken the time to teach them the history. I’m interested in your thoughts Nation: Old School or New School, Nicki or Kim how do we bridge the gap? (Game Blouses!)
I’m old so follow me b4 I hate on u! @4pl
FILED IN Need to Know

I agree with you wholeheartedly on this. Kim is definitely out of pocket for coming at Nicki the way she did. Her excuse is that she didn’t pay homage to her, which is BS. Nicki repeatedly shouted her out in interviews, saying how much Kim and other female MCs influenced her. Yeah, Nicki took Kim’s style and ran with it, but who hasn’t done that in the biz. It was obvious to everyone that Nicki was biting, but for Kim to come out and say so made her look like a hater and that’s why people are up in arms over the situation.
Outside of the Kim/Nicki fiasco have you seen this old vs new mentality in our community
I think the greatest come back for Nicki would be to not respond at all. 10 years ago I would have probably disagreed because at that time Rap needed conflict to survive. We all fed into beefs but with them so watered down and diss records not what they used to be NOT responding to a record from a now sub-par entertainer is verification that you indeed are of a more elevated status. Unfortunately however the juvinality (not a word) in the industry won’t allow it. Although Nicki might not be interested with the Young Money goons pissing in her ear she won’t be able to resit feeding into the hype that in the end will only give Kim more credence.

Me Like! I was a big fan of Lil Kim back in the 90’s. I saw her at MSG back when she came out on that bed with the fur bikini – BADDEST!! In my mind, Lil Kim was the cuties and hottest female MC at the time; better than Trina, Foxy or Eve. She started changing and losing her way – plastic surgery on her face, hanging with wack white people (Tommy Lee and Pam Anderson), making “hood hype” music (“Welcome to Brooklyn”). Sorry Kim your time is over. When you time is up start to think of other was to make that paper. With all the time in the business Kim should be ashamed of herself. Kim should have learned to produce, act, write, SOMETHING. So Nicki shows up shouting out her idol “Lil Kim” and paying homage to Kim with every interview and promo pic. However Kim wanted to keep the spotlight and was mad that Nicki was not giving her the money too. Puhleeze you didn’t see Salt n’ Pepa screaming at Kim. Nicki may not be the best but she has a plan that is clicking. Kim should have played nice and jumped on that Nicki ban wagon instead of bucking what could have been a lucrative plan. Yes the “diss” record Kim made feels forced and like she is holding onto something that has already abandoned her. I wish to remember Kim as that cute Brooklyn girl in “No Time” with Puffy dancing in the background….Take That, Take That, Take That!!
That’s the problem with the black business model. We always want to build from the ground up. We’re never willing to learn or even take what’s already there and improve it. When was the last time you heard of a black entrepreneur actually buying a business and just improving it? I think Nicki was willing to take over Kim’s “business” but Kim wasn’t willing. She said get your own. Look how that works out. Shame.
You’re right Kim could have easily used Nicki as a Catapult to keep her in the lime light and I’m certain Nicki would have had no choice but to oblige, the old Jay-Z formula. Have u ever heard Jigga diss the hottest new rapper NO! He cozy’s up to them and acts like he’s doing them a favor by spitting a verse on the remix version of their hot single, but in reality he’s tapping into their fan base and keeping himself relevant.
Preach! That is why Jay Z is a power player and so is Puffy “rape them dry” Combs.
Exactly that model is nothing new. Its used in the media industry all the time.
sorry for the grammar errors… i was hyped
Every1 bites some1 elses style blatant or otherwise look how any 2pac clones came out after he died…Thanks Suge,I being funny don’t trip . From DMX to Ja Rule to Master P and any other so called thug ass Tatted bandanna wearing rapper was biting his style or look . Now Kim should just accept the fact that she is no longer the Flavor in your Ear.Nikki is Kim didn’t give Salt and Pepa that much credit if u want 2 go there.U should always give props 2 the 1z b4 u but don’t knock the next person 4 doing what u wanted 2 do or took what u did 2 another level. As Ice Cube said on “True to the Game”. Put a bug in ya ear/ now u crossed over/ 2 MTV but they Don’t care/ they’ll have a new Nukkuh next year.
