[RANT] ‘The American People Have Spoken?’ Were We Not Listening in the Bush/ Gore Contest?

Posted by Juan

For the GOP, the election was a referendum of the people. But what happened when those same people didn’t agree?

#election #Wethepeople
Its been a week since the election and the Republican Party continues to bask in the “shellacking” that they delivered to the opposition with a strong assist from the Tea Party Movement.  The victory they have pointed to as the resurgence of the once-down political party and their return to glory.  Their rallying cry:  “The American People have spoken” and that the people have “taken back America” from politicians vowed to take “control” from the people as is we were headed toward some sort of Socialist movement.

“We the People” have spoken huh? What did we say?  Did we say the right thing?  You won’t hear any of that in any of these victory lap speeches.   America has always been driven by sponteneoty and anger which combined with an uniformed electorate can lead to catastrophic results and at very least causes us to bounce back and forth between parties in an endless cycle.  Once again the energetic newly elected are boasting wholesale changes armed with mathematically flawed financial agendas and impossible promises.

Aren’t “WE THE PEOPLE” that almost ten years ago voted to elect one, Al Gore to office but due to the institution “Electoral College” the “Popular” vote was vetoed do to ancient practice.  Combine that the would-be President’s brother, Jed Bush making sure the “will” of the people would not be known by failing to count 1,2,3 and making “dimple chad” a part of the American vernacular.  How were the people heard in that election new Mr. Speaker, John Boehner?

Bottom line is we’ve been duped yet again by politics, jargon and propaganda.  The lack of “the people’s” sophistication and propensity to act on impulse has essentially caused us to once again paint the walls of the House of Representatives; this time from Blue to Red.  How many coats of paint do we need before we’re willing to to make any sacrifices to enable viable solutions.

Ok so now that Sarah Palin’s Tea Party has effectively “taken back America,” who did they give it to?  The same group of morons that supported the relection of George W. Bush for a second term?  I think we’d all agree that was a mistake .  Maybe they’re hoping the new regime will find another war to reinvent that we can dump billions more dollars in so that private firms can benefit.  That’s the kind of stimulus we need.

I know I sound bitter, but believe me I’m not.  I’m not a Democratic apologist, they’re screwed up beyond belief as well.  The problem is the PEOPLE.  With the internet, twitter and social tools the stranglehold media has on our everyday lives is endless.  He who controls it has the power to “infect” whatever message they’d like and the problems is WE BELIEVE it.  If its on TV it must be true.  We need to be more educated, pay more attention and refuse to continuously get fooled.  Give me a break “PEOPLE” and  WAKE UP!

    AMEN, BROTHER!!!!!
    No, seriously, cosign 100%, Juan.

  2. auchamp22 says:

nothing else to add to that… i agree with about 70% of the things you usually post Juan… 100% here…

  3. Mr. Bad Guy says:

Juan, that’s just the way it is. The vast majority don’t see past the events and happenings of the day. President Obama is in office so he is to blame for everything that is wrong, so what else is there to do but get people in power who will oppose him, in hopes that it will reverse ALL the wrong he has done. The same thing was done when Bush was in office, which is why there was a Democrat majority in the House and Senate, I really can’t remember the political climate before Bush because I didnt really give a shit, so forgive me. This type of political flip-flop wil continue for all eternity…. You will only anger yourself into a stroke if you attempt to figure it all out.
    .
I stopped trying to figure out human nature a long time ago…I do whatever I need to do to better myself & my household and ATTEMPT to show others what I found to work, and to attempt to steer them away from what doesn’t. At the end of the day people do, what not is logical, but what they FEEL is easiest.
    .
For instance, I have a sure fire way to fix the economy. Flat out give no breaks, no cuts, everyone gets taxed 30%, whether you make a buck or a trillion and get NOTHING back at the end of the year, unless you were taxes at over 30%. AND give everyone access to the budget line by line dollar by dollar, YES, I WILL READ IT, ALL OF IT, AND QUESTION SHIT!!!!! Let this go for two years and the country will be back on its feet.
    .
(Sarcasm time)But who the HELL wants to wait that long? Two years? That’s long ass time!!!! AND, the Powers that be doesnt want us commoners, the ones who put them in power, to see what they do with OUR money…. ITS ALL A FUCKING GAME!!!!!
    .
Unfortunately its all game we all have to play. He who screams loudest gets heard, and people only scream when things are bad, they don’t scream to preserve the good they have….

    • Juan says:

Do we really put them in power though? Or do the most amount of “The People” just get duped by the candidate and his cronies with the most amount of money and most clever way of fooling us? All it really does is show how stupid collectively we are. “WE THE PEOPLE” Get outta here. We should strike that from the constitution.

      • Mr. Bad Guy says:

We, the people as a collective, get fucking duped!!!! Just along with everything else in life!!! Like this, but dont like that. Wear this and you are cool, wear that and you are wack. They are for us, but them over there, they are against us. If you are this, get over here, if you are that go stay over there.
        .
The realm of politics, in any manner, is just an extension of grade school/ junior high school/ high school, school yard antics. and once again we all must play…..to a point…

  4. Mr. Bad Guy says:

    wow that was long…

  5. Juan says:

Thanks for the reassurance. I’ve been thinking about this rant since last Tuesday but was concerned it would come across as sour grapes when the point was valid regardless of which party was in power.

  6. 2NA$$TEE says:

    • Juan says:

I think your absolutely right. These political parties are like two thirsty dudes spitting at the hood rat chick with the big booty. They’ll say anything to get you in the sack and her self esteem is so low she’ll believe it.

  7. DJ Diva says:

wow…a hood rat huh? lol smh I agree with all the commenters and you too of course Juan. I work with political scientists and they live the same way in everyday life. Back biting, lying, scheming, it can sometimes be hard to keep my own sanity. The people are sheep and the ruling party (and by this I mean Republicans and Democrats because to me they are the same thing)are skilled shepherds. The truth is not everyone is smart. How in the world did a woman who claimed to be a witch get ANY votes? There are some dumb folks out there. That said, I voted for Jimmy McMillan and I’ll tell you why. I knew Cuomo had it in the bag; Paladino is a self-destructing fool, but I wanted my vote to count for something. The rent really is too damn high and I wanted to send that message. Now I would have kicked my own ass if Jimmy won, but I think me and those other 25,000+ people who voted for the idea made conscious decisions to speak out about an issue. I would love to have less government and more referendums, but even all the weed smokers in California couldn’t get weed legalized so leaving it in the hands of the people is not always a good idea.

    • Juan says:

For those who don’t know Jimmy McMillan he was the NY candidate who ran under his newly minted party the “Rent is too damn high” party. I too voted for him like Diva for similar reasons. (Perhaps I was inspired by her.) While he wasn’t going to fix much in the rhelm of the budget, wall street, etc. his platform was very simple and spoke to one of my most immediate concerns. I was trying to exercise MY voice instead that of my party.

    • Mr. Bad Guy says:

I totally agree. I myself voted for Counsilman Charles Barron. Mainly due to I always see him in the streets. Whether at the African Arts Festival at Commodore Perry Park, or Brooklyn Community street festivals and other similar venues, I see HIM, where these other politicians will NEVER show their faces. To me represents where I came from and knows about the real struggle amongst those who need help, not just what the media or other policitians what to shine the spotlight on. And he’s not afraid to ruffle feathers and speak whats’s on his mind, a true Bad Guy.

      • Juan says:

I guess the challenge then becomes how do we actually get these people elected, would they be good public officials and if such support would only make them more susceptible to the temptations of public interest. Remember Carcetti started out just how you described. (The Wire reference)

        • DJ Diva says:

Not only Carcetti (loved the Wire)…how about a true life example Kwame in Detroit…heck Eliot Spitzer here. I was always mad that Spitzer wasn’t able to govern. I really thought he would have moved NY in the right direction. Instead you get somebody like Patterson, whom I watched come up the ranks in Harlem and I voted for him, and you would think he would do a good job. But the last two years since I’ve been back in NY, I have watched him systematically fuck up. You think you doing the right thing and they get in office and have a totally separate agenda. I have actively participated in different elections and it really is a game of chance with these people.

        • Mr. Bad Guy says:

You can’t have people like Jimmy McMillan or former Black Panther Counsilman Charles Barron elected in a high political position. They carry the baggage of their urban/ impoverished background with them. The issues would go up in smoke and their affliations and past happenings would take over the whole campaign.
          .
Look at a “squeaky clean” person like myself. East Flatbush, Brooklyn born and bred. No run-ins with the law what so ever, well two parking and two red light camera tickets, well rounded and educated, honorable Marine Corps discharge, few can say anything bad about me, probably evertyhing you would want to see in a candidate… except the affliations. To be short, when 2pac said “My family tree consists of drug dealers, thugs, and killers”, he had it easy in my eyes…. and the same goes for 95% of all minority urbanites. Thats why many of us will NEVER see public office and further there not enough of us conscience urbanites to support conscience urbanites….

          • E.L.Diaz says:

Absolutely, Bruh. Your statement highlights the point I made on another of Juan posts: the whole system is fucked up because all these damn crooks get in office because of their affiliations–personal and business–and they perpetuate/worsen existing problems, like the freaking NYS budget!!! Decent, hard-working people, like yourself, I’m sure, have no shot at any meaningful political post because your affiliations are different.
