Justin Timberlake & Jimmy Fallon Show Whiteboys Do Know Thier Hip Hop History

Posted by Juan

With a killer assist from the Roots, they bust down a Musical Medley Hip Hop History Lesson in one of those classic late night TV moments.

When Jimmy Fallon first landed on Late Night, I guess about a year and some ago I was syked.  Not because I really thought Fallon was going to be any good (I didn’t really know) but because if he sucked at least I could watch performances by The Legendary Roots Crew every night which had signed on to be the in-house band.  If you’ll remember as the launch approached I published quite a few posts about NBC’s new Late Night show.

Now, I only occasionally watch the show as I’m usually pounded the keyboard trying to find interesting topics for the Nation at that time but I did happen to catch the interview with Justin Timberlake in promotion of his new film “The Social Network” about Mark Zuckerberg‘s advent of FacebookSidenote: My inner geek can’t wait to see that by the way.

Anyway, during the performance as you’ll see Fallon asks Timberlake about his appreciation for Hip Hop and in obviously well rehersed bit the two bust down a medley of some of Rap music’s most iconic singles.  I can’t lie they killed the SouljaBoyTellem “Superman.”

So often we knock white kids for not understand, respecting or appreciating the essence and history of the culture and its music.  In a rare moment it was kinda cool to see these two white boys that obviously were influenced by Hip Hop to pay APPROPRIATE homage.  Salute!

I have 2 comment Juan , as I being the Hip Hop head that I am , I have observed how White Boys who actually love Hip Hop , have a keen knowledge of it and can tell u stats like their fav sports team. Yet African Americans we have no since of appreciation 4 the foundation as a hole. No 1 really mentions the Latin Quarters or most never heard of 4 funky 4 plus 1 which had a female lead MC .The most old school most heads want 2 go back iz 2 Snoop and Dr. Dre and 4 sum that’s even 2 far back. I love the actual rich history of hip hop and if I ever get my travel cheese 2gether I would love 2 visit some of the recording studios like Chung King or go 2 Holis Queens the Boogie Down Bronx go 2 where Kool Herc used 2 have block parties. Go 2 Compton or where KDAY used 2 be located . Travel 2 5th Ward in Houston Long live the Geto Boys. Let’s be appreciative of a music form that was literally made from just 2 turn tables and a microphone Shouts out 2 Sugar Hill records Kool Herc, Grand Master Caz 4 helping write “Rappers Delight” did not get credit .Grand Master Flash Hollywood Finnese and Sequence 2 RUN DMC RIP JMJ. We need 2 research beyond who is on the Young Money roster . Hip Hop 4 life. 2NA$$TEE THE H1P H0P NYMPH0.

      2Na$$tee,

I love the way you think. You are right on with this one. White Hip Hop heads will recite flows and detail history because they feel if they’re not prepared they may be tested by their black counterparts who as you pointed out don’t take that same pride or aren’t as dilligent in rediscovering hip hop.

If you ever do get that scrilla together and want to come out east. I’ll certainly be your tour guide just let me know.

This is nice to see. Regardless of race, everyone should have a good grip on where hip-hop came from, as it gives a much greater appreciation of where it has gone.

This web site is starting to suck. It has not been updated since Monday. And you wonder why this is not one of the top blogs on the net!!!!
