President Obama’s iPod Playlist is More Gangsta Than Yours
He’s gone from Jigga now to the embattled Lil Wayne and Nas?
@BarackObama @liltunechi @nas
In the age of information there has never been a President more examined and prodded than our current. For a long time I believed it was because of the historic nature of his Presidency, and while that may play a factor, the On-Demand world we live in with data just a Google away has made everything from his underwear preference to the brand of shades he wears a story.
So when Rolling Stone recently interviewed the hipster Prez, they knew they needed to dig deep. In the past, as recent as his famed The View appearance, the President made reference to the music he keeps on his iPod. So with one’s music taste always evolving Rolling Stone once again revisited the question.
What music have you been listening to lately? What have you discovered, what speaks to you these days?
…Thanks to Reggie [Love, his "Body Man"], my rap palate has greatly improved. Jay-Z used to be sort of what predominated, but now I’ve got a little Nas and a little Lil Wayne and some other stuff, but I would not claim to be an expert. Malia and Sasha are now getting old enough to where they start hipping me to things. Music is still a great source of joy and occasional solace in the midst of what can be some difficult days.
While his need for “solace” offers a curious footnote lets instead focus on his artistic tastes. Nas and Lil Wayne? While Nas has had something to offer he hasn’t put out a solo project in some time and if he’s referring to his “Distant Relatives” joint venture with Damien Jr. Gong Marley that’s quite underground for a President.
On the flip side while Lil Wayne is as mainstream as they become I’m surprised his aides didn’t warn him about showing any appreciation for Weezie’s music. Given his current status as an inmate on Rikers Island, I’m curious how the Right Wing spin doctors will try to use this in the upcoming midterm elections. I can see it now: President Obama supports Weezie’s music and thus the illicit activity which landed him in the clink.
While we’re not privy to the entire playlist I’ve gotta admit that’s a pretty good start. I don’t even have the Nas/ Marley project yet. I guess he’s got me beat. SOUND OFF: Is President Obama’s Playlist more gangsta than yours?
