[RANT] Will The Entertainment Biz Stop Making A Mockery Of the U.S. Political System?!

Posted by Juan

Can Entertainers Please Mind their Business. People are too stupid NOT to vote for you.

@lindaforsenate @wwe #vote #elections
As we draw closer to the November midterm elections, the political advertising begins to ramp up and the mudslinging between Democrats, Republicans and their henchmen, The Tea Party gets interesting.  Over the past few weeks those of you in the New York/ Tri-State area may have noticed a political ad from one Linda McMahon for Congress.  Yeah THAT Linda McMahon.

For those of you, like me, who don’t keep up with “professional” wrestling Linda McMahon is the wife of Vince McMahon, and former CEO and current owner of the powerful and extremely lucrative  franchise.  Linda is basically the first lady of wrestling and she’s running for Senate in the state of Connecticut.

While she isn’t the first celebrity to run for office, seeing her ads have really hit a nerve with me.  What is it with Americans that we consistently entrust the job of drafting legislation that effects every component of our lives to….entertainers.  Perhaps its still a product of the Regan Effect.  Most people forget that Ronald Regan was nothing more than an actor prior to getting into politics.  But Regan was also an intelligent cat whose skillset in entertainment translated very well to politics.

But since then we’ve seen a slew of ill-fated political career changes.  Arnold Schwarzenegger failed to follow in the Regan’s footsteps and ran the state of California economically into the ground.  Staying in wrestling you can even point to the mixed results garnered by Jessie “The Body” Ventura‘s one term Governor stint in Minnesota.  Most recently we talked at length about the brainless Haitian Presidential campaign of Wyclef Jean.  At one point even Charles Barkley was rumored to run for office in the state of Alabama.  Could you imagine that disaster.

Bottom line is the madness has gotta stop.  We as a society need to stop cutting corners.  Making everything a popularity contest.  Running for Senate has become like running for Junior High School student Government or Homecoming Queen.  If you’re on the football team and down with the “in-crowd”  you’ll get elected.  Didn’t we learn that doesn’t work from the results of the Bush administration? We’re the same society that contracts airplane parts to the lowest bidder.  Are our lives not valuable anymore?

What ever happened to having the best, most talented?  Last time I checked they still teach Political Science in schools.  I’m sure there are some talented and very passionate young stars that can’t get a shot because some entertainer won the popularity contest.  Its like if black movies all of a sudden stopped casting black actors and instead only hired entertainers to play all the parts…uhhh ok.  bad example.

People need to take politics more seriously.  Ever election is important.  That’s why I try to not only vote in every election, primary and general, but also educate myself on the candidates.  These local elections might seem insignificant but every President, Governor, Senator we elect had to start somewhere maybe at the city council level, State Assembly?  If we’re not voting or not paying attention to who we’re voting for it makes it very easy for those political strategist that Malcolm always warns us about to come in and infuse “their guys.”  At these lower levels it doesn’t take much to win an election or lose one for that matter.  Not taking voting seriously in could mean the best candidate for President 15 years from now is instead working at Radio Shack because you and a few of your neighbors blew off the primary election to throw a couple back at the bar.

Bottom line is when are we going to wake up and stop doing whats popular and start doing what’s right and in our best interest.  All this shit matters.  The powers that be would have us believe it doesn’t ofcourse so they can maintain control.  But we’ve gotta be smarter than that. Its not easy being different but no one ever got anywhere standing in line.

Maybe once in awhile comment about who has the better beats , Kanye West or Dr.Dre that is about as political as we get. “People Of Color” meaning ANY color other than white men. Yes white womem I am talking 2 u 2. Peep game we need 2 b more politically aware of our surroundings. Voting 4 President Obama should have been just the start we should “bum rush the Show” like we did in the 2008 election. Like Juan said every election should be important 2 us . Don’t get 2 bitching and complaining when the Hammer drops on your foot compliments of “Whitey” get your ass up, turn off Maury and all those court shows go 2 a library or your computer and do research on these Politicians who r in the Game right now. Politics is like high school… a popularity contest. It worked for our illustrious President Obama who had the highest popularity ratings. Yes it is important to vote but I am within the majority that says “F*ck it”. I used to be so into politics when I first started voting. I even requested an absentee ballot when I was away at college. The passion has died b/c I trust no one in politics. NO ONE is really helping the poor. Guess I am a part of the problem…
