ESPN’s 30 for 30: Was The 2Pac/ Mike Tyson Friendship Responsible for Their Respective Demise?

Posted by Fat Back Chef

Would Tupac still be here if it weren’t for Tyson and would Tyson’s career have ended differently if Pac wasn’t killed?

Over the past few months ESPN has been airing a documentary series called 30 for 30.  The series features thirty films about moments in sports history that not only impacted the sports landscape but the world surrounding.  I really got into the series when the profiled the documentary the Two Escobars about the connection between Pablo Escobar‘s Columbian Drug Cartel and the murder of disgraced Colombian soccer giant Andres Escobar. Its interesting because it shows how sports impacts current events and the impact that a game has on our lives.

Last night ESPN aired their latest installment, “One Night In Vegas” about the Tupac Shakur murder in Las Vegas and his interesting relationship with then Boxing superstar, “Iron” Mike Tyson who was fighting at the MGM Grand that night.  To say the series is groundbreaking is an understatement and this latest installment is a MUST SEE for any boxing, hip hop, Tyson or Pac fan.  Here’s a little snippet.

The film draws some very interesting parallels to the two fallen giants lives.  It shows how both were characterized as uncontrollable, both very talented and both convicted of sex crimes that would eventual lead to their eventual and respective demise.  2Pac in the grave, and Tyson to endure a disappointing career end and subsequent psychological torture and emotional anguish.

While on the surface the two would seem to be the farthest from similar especially during the times of the East Coast/ West Coast Beefs.  It would seem unconscionable for a Brooklyn Bred Fighter to have fraternized with a Los Angeles emcee but the two were friends.  “One Night in Vegas” examines that friendship and the depths of their relationship.   It even shows clips from an interesting episode of the Arsenio Hall Show where Pac almost describes Tyson as his mentor.  HIS MENTOR.  To imagine that one of the premier lyricist of all time would look up to the seemingly uneducated mindless Mike Tyson for advice.

While the piece opened my eyes to a lot of things it did beg many questions.  Not the least bit of which is whether the Pac murder was the reason for Tyson’s eventual demise and what impact Tyson and specifically his incarceration played on 2Pac’s murder. Really interesting.

pac broke the oath when he called out quincy jones and dr. dre for being gay, thats what got him killed. tryin to break away from the illuminati, but they got to him. its funny; when killuminati came out i was like what the hell is a killuminati. now i know and wish i didnt.mike on the other hand just had to much power esp.. for a thug. he was gettin really rich at a fierce rate. we all know what happens to a black man when he has too much money or power. hes not innocent by any means in my book because eventho i dont believe he raped that girl but he was beatin the shit out of robin

2PAC was killed bcuz of the company he kept and running his mouth waaaayyyy 2 much. I am a huge 2pac FAN as well as Iron Mike the 2nd greatest Boxer in Modern day Boxing .Both come from poverty stricken backgrounds very humble beginings. Then both studied their respective craft and become the Best at what they did is simply amazing from a fan stand point as well as gaining power side of it. Women seem 2 be the downfall 4 both as far as the judicial system is concerned . I feel both men would have had greater success if they would have had real mentors instead of yes men. Mike Tyson had Don King and 2pac had Suge Knight both were bad really bad 4 these men.I feel Pac and Mike would have gone on 2 do gr8 things Pac had the rap game on lock and was looking 2 do more acting and leave Death Row.Iron Mike could have beat Rocky M’s record of 50 wins and no defeats but it was already in place 4 the latest in a looooong line of Blackmen with money and power 2 be destroyed by AmeriKKKa 1 way or the other.

2pacs death was tragic but predictable. i think the two escobars was more interesting because the deaths of those two men affected a whole country and how that country saw themselves.
