I really didn’t want to spend too much time on the subject given my opinion on the topic was that the media attention alone was part of the problem.  However Highbrid Nation isn’t your ordinary media outlet and when I saw this I couldn’t resist.

Apparently the Godfather of Hip Hop, Russell Simmons took it upon himself to make a bold statement of support for the proposed Islamic Cultural Center NEAR the World Trade Center Cite.  Simmons, a lower Manhattan resident with a sprawling penthouse loft litterally across the street from the “Ground Zero” construction site teamed up with artist Glen Friedman to post these images of religious symbols that spell out “Coexist”.

Naturally the symbols gained media attention the NY Daily News interviewed him to find out what the message was all about.

“I hope some yogi sees om. I hope that some Christian sees the cross. I hope that some Jewish person sees Star of David. I want people to see their images,” Simmons said. “That’s the idea to coexist and to learn to love each other.”

In addition three other windows are displayed on the decorated windows which Simmons says will remain posted through September 11th.  “MARK 12:31,” which is the Bible verse,  “love thy neighbor”, “USA = FREE,” and “IT’S THE LAW.”  So where did Simmons get the idea from?  Believe it or not it came to him 10 a.m. Monday morning while exercising on his StairMaster.  He made a quick call to Friedman, who had helped him post a anti-war message during the summer of 2004 and viola.

“I’m appalled that there’s even a dialogue about it…Roughly two billion muslims in the world did not attack us,” he said.  “America is using the mosque and Ground Zero as a mask for its own Islamophia.”

I hate his little made up word “Islamophia”, its weak but he does make a good point.  Is America sending the message that they’re at war with TWO BILLION MUSLIMS?!  That’s a scary thought as an American and if I’m in the military stationed in the Middle East if those figures are correct I’d feel vastly outnumbered.  But that’s what America is saying by somehow equating Islam to evil.
