XXL Selects Shyne For Sept Cover: Suggests He’s Last ‘Real’ Rapper Alive?

Posted by Juan

Ahhhh no rap might be dead but I’m pretty sure there’s still a few “real” rappers ALIVE.

In his first magazine cover since being released from prison, Shyne aka Moses Levy grabs the cover of XXL magazine’s upcoming Septemeber issue. But more intriguing than that is the headline that accompanies it. The last real rapper alive? What’s the basis for that?

That is the worst and most poorly written headline I’ve ever seen. OK even if you’re a cynic like me and believe the game is merely a shell of its old self sporting a bunch of hypemen masquerading as emcees you still couldn’t make that statement. What happened? All the old emcees die along with Biggie and Pac?

Is Big Daddy Kane, Rakim Allah, KRS-One, Kool G Rap, Chuck D and Scarface all dead? I know they don’t pump out records like they used to but to say Shyne…SHYNE? is the last real rapper ALIVE? That’s irresponsible. I mean even Nas and Jay-Z athough past their prime should take offense to such ridiculous.

Is this not the same magazine that burst on the scene with their historic cover entitled “The Greatest Day featuring a few dozen “RAPPERS” modeled after the 1959 Esquire Magazine shoot that famously captured the greatest Jazz musicians of the era.  Did all those 200+ rappers die in the last 11 years?

I petition XXL to run a retraction in next month’s issue for displaying such carelessness on its front cover. Of course I’ll wait to actually read the article and what its referring to before I launch my Twitter campaign urging them to do so.

    Shyne’s new shit is garbage….

  2. Mr. Bad Guy says:

While I cannot talk ill of another Flatbush, Brooklyn Brethen, but irresponible would be the lightest of responses to that headline…

But think about it, as irresponible and ludicrous as the headline is, it has us intrigued enough to throw our 4 ducats down to delve further into the headline…
    .
As 4PL says at the end of his posts,

    Game Blouses…

I’m glad we all agree that XXL is talking nonsense. Plus…why do people forget about G-Deni? Jada? Red? The Rebel INS?

Sure there are a lot of BS rappers now but with that last headline, does that mean they will no longer have people on the cover who are wack?

  4. 4pl says:

I feel what y’all are saying but its all about relevance. Shyne is relevant not b/c of any records he has out but b/c of the controversy surrounding him and his release from prison. All of the great emcees you named earlier are relevant right now. So out of all the relevant emcees Shyne might be the realest, but then again the bar is so low it doesn’t matter.

MEANT TO SAY….earlier are irrelevant! MY BUST(throwback)
