Find Out Why Hugh Hefner Is Suing Drake
and why his career could be over before it stared
@HUGHHEFNER @DRAKKARDNOIR #lawsuit
In a culture predicated on biting and copying….excuse me SAMPLING, its amazing that we don’t report lawsuits every day. Oh wait……..we do. The latest and perhaps most bizaare we’ve heard in quite some time is that Hip Hop’s new posterboy, Drake is being sued by of all people Hugh Hef and his Playboy Enterprises empire. HUH?!
No he’s not being sued for looking like a playboy bunny but rather a copyright infringment stemming from his signature hit “Best I Ever Had.” Hef suit claims the song samples a snippit from “Fallin’ In Love,” by Hamilton, Joe Frank, and Dennison/Reyonalds of which Playboy owns the rights to.
Language in the suit claims Drake, Lil Wayne and Young Money etc all “knew or should have reasonably known, that the sound recording was protected by copyright.” and that the “Defendant continues to infringe upon Plaintiff’s rights in and to the copyrighted sound recording.” The suit goes on to conclude the “infringing conduct is continuing and ongoing.”
According to the suit, Playboy expects Drake to “cease and desist” all sales of the single and turn over ALL PROFITS!!! Wow.
Its interesting that this would now surface. That track has been played out on the airwaves for what seems like a year already. OHHHH I GET IT. His album just dropped and to be quite honest he really hadn’t yet recouped considerable income yet until he sold a half a mil or so in his first week. That probably set off the radar at the Playboy Mansion and Hef syched his lawyers on Drake.

Thats Lame of Hef…Song is damn near two years old or longer… your pockets are deep enough… go f$ck a playmate and drink some tea….
I think he wants to crossover to hip hop on the low. The magazine is struggling big time. Maybe he can flip a cameo off this to settle the case.
Man..thats messed up, well I guest it be like that some times, ole boy probably bounce right back, plus he’s still young!
I think that Juan is on point with his observation. Hip Hop and sex just can’t get enough of each other.
That’s Drake’s fault, you always get sample clearance first before you put out a song. I would have sued his ass too if he stole my music. For thoses who dont agree people(like myself) work hard to come up with original music and tracks. And to have someone steal it, use it, make money, and not pay me is crazy.
That’s business. Good job, Hef! I applaud this man
Thats crazy. Does anybody know what the actual sample is? Is it a lyric, the beat, I mean what exactly did Drake forget to get clearance for?
Sit your old ass down somewhere and think abour how you gonna still get it up for the next few months, while you still among the living, Hef! Damn, you should be thanking God every day for the life you’ve had, not F*ing with a young guy trying to get his!
@B.E.B…… A sample is piece of original music thats already produced, or used to make music. It can be a piece of a song, or lyric’s to a song. Let say I wanted to use a piece of ” Thiller- by Michael Jackson” and wanted to redo it and rap/sing on it. I would have to get permission or “clearance” from Sony or MJ estate to use it. If I dont, I get sued, and won’t make a dollar for using it.
So for all yall young producer and beat makers don’t get mad at Hugh Hefner. Just know the game before you play it. Make sure you get “clearance” before putting out work you “sampled” because you WILL get sued, and your career will be over before it starts.
I can understand where Mr. Hefner is coming from, but I don’t agree with him. Why didn’t he do this when the song first came out, he knows what he’s doing. He’s jus’ trying to get more money, since Drake’s CD is making money. The really bad part about this is that Mr. Hefner doesn’t need anymore money, he’s jus’ being greedy in my opinion. PEACE!!!
