Was Chris Brown’s BET Awards Michael Jackson Tribute Career Redemption?
Did an emotional C. Brown look at the “Man in the Mirror” and Ask Him Change His Ways.
@CHRISBROWN @mechanicaldummy
There are some TV moments that you know while watching them that you will never forget. Ironically for our generation so many of them somehow involved Michael Jackson. His moonwalk during the Motwon 25 year anniversary show, the premier of Thriller. So when he died just over a year ago, we all thought those moments were behind us. But yesterday, the embattled Chris Brown who of course has been the target of much controversy, hate and scrutiny took the stage at the BET Awards, ripped the Mike Jack tribute dance and at its conclusion seemed to have been so overwhelmed with emotion he couldn’t perform “Man In the Mirror.”
“I’m starting with the man in the mirror
I’m asking him to change his ways
And no message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself, and then make a change”
I’m not gonna front I got chills. We should all be ashamed that we didn’t appreciate and respect the man enough when he was alive choosing instead to focus on his eccentricities. In the end that may be why God called him home. Punishment for us not appreciating one of his most special gifts.
Chalk another one up for the King of Pop. The man that impacted so many of our lives with his music continues to do so even after his passing. Could there have been more irony and symmetry that a song created some 22+ years ago would have been written and performed no more perfectly than for that exact moment. Not just for C. Breezy but for us all.
Now of course you’ll read all over the net about how Brown made this about him instead of Michael but isn’t that how Mike would have had it? If he could help that man escape his demons he would have gladly shared the stage in order to do so. And in the end maybe Chris is a good actor but that emotion is hard to fake. In the end Chris Brown might not be perfect but in the end neither was Mike, neither are any of us. Start with the man in the mirror. Lets forgive the kid and move on.

He killed that tribute, only Mike could do better… his moonwalk was weak but everything else was on point….
Nah dog. No one can do the moonwalk that’s the problem. Mike had that moonwalk no smash. Chris Brown maybe one of the greatest dancers in the game and he might as well have been doing the cabbage patch.
With all that he’s gone through with the media and and all the hatered thats been thrown his way, with rihanna moving on can do no wrong. I FELT Chris pain last night. This to me was a very hard act to put on, just singing the song and what it means and at the time that we celebrate the one year passing of THE GREATEST ENTERTAINER OF THE WORLD. There is a saying (what don’t kill us makes us stronger.)Chris made Michael proud!
I can be a very cynical person at times, even more so when it involves a celebrity but lastnight was truely amazing. It felt like Mikes spirit was in the building, I know this sounds super corney but that’s what it felt like. It was like Mike was saying, “Okay, are we finished hating on this kid now…how about we all look at ourselves in the mirror for a hot minute.”
That moment was meant to happen lastnight, it will never be duplicated, it was raw emotion coming from that kid. I found it interesting when Jermaine Jackson introduced the performer he didn’t mention the person’s name, probably because he didn’t want people judging Chris before his performance.
Chris Killed it, Micheal Jackson was alive and well lastnight!!!!
Very well said. The point about how Jermaine introduced him is absolutely a great point.
If he would of did the lean Mike did on smooth criminal i would of turned the tv off…. that ish can’t be duplicated…
Damn it man! Yall making me want to watch that right now! I recorded the awards show on my DVR because I wasn’t home last night but I’m gonna watch it when I get home and see what all this is about!!!
Everybody hated on BET last year for not doing a tribute, well in retrospect they did it right they waited while everyone else rushed and threw something together BET actually fell back and last night was the best MJ tribute to date. Breezy killed it although the crying and the Glen Davis drooling was a lil over the top and maybe even rehearsed, it was still dope and now Chris has his life and career back move out the way Justin Beiber!
AMEN
It’s impossible for me to call Chris Brown’s pain fake when I still feel it over Michael’s death. I still can’t watch “This is It” all the way through without getting emotional about it. Michael Jackson’s lose is so great to people who truly loved him for his talent and ignored everything else.
Say Hi to the Badguy. I don’t care how good his performance was last night, or how truly remorseful he is. He got off easy for what he did. Leave it to black people to hold other than honorable characters in high esteem. O.J. Simpson, R. Kelly and more recently Chris Brown. What’s the deal with these flawed role models? Why do we cheer for them? I feel no differently about him now than I did then. Redemption not found. So like I said, Say hi to the badguy because while all of you swoon over the kid, I still shake my head at the lil’ punk who beat the shit out of Rihanna.
first off i see what you saying but let me break it down for you…..
.
Most black people didn’t praise OJ for what he did we were happy that a black man got off. We all know he murdered that woman we all know he was wrong for it BUT we as black people were happy to see him get off because there are so many black men everyday that get a raw deal in the justice system…some over white women. Its hard for me as a black woman to know that black men get involved with white women and then get thrown under the bus by them just because the bitches know they have the power to do it. So is OJ the “black people’s role model” hell no. BUT it was nice to see a black man go free for a change.
.
R. Kelly most black people don’t praise him for what he did(and may be STILL doing) I stoppped buying Kellz’s albums after that video surfaced. Now does the artist still make me move does his music still make me want to pull my man into a room and give him the business…YES…BUT the man I will never respect. I don’t want him to meet my daughter and I don’t want to buy an album, go to a concert, or anything else….so I download! He isn’t the “black people’s role model”!! Black aren’t stupid we just like good music and thats how his sorry ass stays afloat.
.
Chris brown wasn’t right for what he did BUT how long should he have to appologize to the public….a public he did nothing to. Rihanna is obviously over it cause hell she took no time fucking Drake’s ass soon after getting beat down. Another thing is we have NO idea what REALLY went on in that car. I was raised that if you don’t want to get hit like a man then don’t step to a man…period. She knew he came from a violent home and in 2 years of dating I refuse to believe that she didn’t know that he had a temper. Now I’m not saying this justifies anything but the fact of the matter is she could have set him off. She likes that drama shit or she wouldn’t have stayed that long. No one ever thinks of the fact that ONLY his wrong doings of that night of pointed out….NEVER did we hear about what she did or what she said. She said in that interview when asked if she hit him….She got this smirk on her face and said if I did does that mean I deserved this. No she didn’t deserve it BUT at the same time what ever she did to him wasn’t right either!!
.
All in all I’m saying the boy has suffered enough and to put in a catagory with a pedafile and a muderer is a bit much. those other 2 mentioned are grown ass men that have been in the game a long ass time and was doing shit cause they knew they could get away with it…Chris Brown was 20 years old when he hit Rihanna. He is still a kid learning as he goes. Its been over a year and he has appologized on top of appologized and if Rihanna’a ass is over why aren’t we. HEll she’s the one that got hit not us!! I’m not saying you have to support him. By all means don’t if thats how you feel BUT this post is showing that he was a MJ fan all day. He honored his hero. And its about time cause I was pissed when BET splashed Ne-Yo’s ass all over last years tribute and tere was no Chris. I think that everyone makes mistakes and if you learn from them than you are entitled to a second chance….REMEMBER R-Kelly marrid Aaliyah and still was doing shit….hell probably still is. OJ is in jail for bullshit cause he didn’t learn to calm his old ass down. Let Chris show us he has changed he is young and deserves that DAMN
I appreciate your response, and I totally feel you on everything you took the time to say. Very valid points. I just can’t feel it, I mean I was never a fan, just ain’t my steelo(throwback), and the sense of time passed is lost on me because I’ve been deployed for the better part of his misgivings. So I say to you I don’t feel it, feels calculated. His performance was great but I this is showbiz and how real could have possibly been, I was like “and cue the tears….NOW!” Whether or not he was purging his demons right then I just don’t know. Call me a cynic or hater or whatever it was just lost on me. If the kid is released from his penance with time served then so be it. Just my thoughts.
great performance by Chris Breezy! He kilt it, channeling the spirit of MJ! Wasn’t no fakery to that emotion! People are just cynical of true outward emotion! Remember, it was reported that he wanted to do the tribute last year but was stopped by Jay-Z forces (over the Rihanna B/S). Welcome home the Prodigal Son!
Allow me to be the person who keeps it as real as possible…who cares? He’s not Mike and he is just trying to get his off from Mike’s song. This is one of the reasons why I don’t listen to the radio nor watch that God-forsaken channel, BET. Shame on all of you for even wasting keystrokes on this loser.
I didn’t see it but hearing about it and reading back it only makes me wish I got those precious moments back that I wasted readin such filth. Piss off Chris Brown, you grubby little wanker
Man yall hyped it up to be something so emotional. I don’t know if he was faking it or not but it didn’t make me say “wow he’s changed”. I could care less but he did ok. Wasn’t the best MJ tribute, shit those other guys with the suits that lit up were better than Chris Brown.
gotta disagree B.E.B…. as far as the dancing that was prolly the best tribute anyone has given Mike…
@Left-Eye…. why are you commenting if you are pissed about losing a few “precious moments” of your life? Are you working on a PH.D. or something? Are you on the cusp of finding the cure for AIDS? Like the rest of us, you have TIME ON YOUR HANDS, else you wouldn’t be over here trying to fake like you’re above the rest of us B.E.T.-watching fools. You are the most UN-real commenter on here (if I may keep it real). “Grubby little wanker?” Is that how an Englishman curses? You sound like a scorned lover! What has Chris Brown ever done to you personally?
Chris Browns performance was amazing at the BET Awards. His Michael Jackson tribute was extra special and a fitting tribute to the King Of Pop. Hes such an amazing artist. I love his R&B songs and I love Chris Browns music videos too. I am mainly a rap music fan and I usually watch Rap & Hip hop music videos but I take my hat off to Chris Brown for putting in an awesome performance.
