Doctor Invents Female Condom with Teeth Aimed At Preventing Rapes

40 years ago, South African doctor, Dr. Sonnet Ehlers was traumatized when she was forced to treat a patient that had been raped and left for dead. The woman who she describes as a “living corpse” has provided the inspiration for her life’s work since then.
CNN recently profiled, Dr. Ehlers and her new female condom harshly named the Rape-aXe designed to prevent rapes. Ehlers, then a 20-year-old medical researcher drew the idea for the contraceptive when her patient remarked that she would have been saved “if only I had teeth down there.”
South Africa has one of the highest rape rates in the world, Human Rights Watch says on its website. A 2009 report by the nation’s Medical Research Council found that 28 percent of men surveyed had raped a woman or girl, with one in 20 saying they had raped in the past year, according to Human Rights Watch.
The latex female condom works much like a tampon only lined with jagged rows of teeth-like hooks which will painfully latch on to a man’s penis during penetration make it only removable by a doctor, a procedure Ehlers hopes will be done with authorities on standby to make an arrest.
“It hurts, he cannot pee and walk when it’s on,” she said. “If he tries to remove it, it will clasp even tighter.
Of course the concern is that traditional condoms are designed to not only prevent pregnancy but stop the spread of HIV and other STD’s a rampid problem in Africa. However, Ehlers says she accounted for such concerns in her design.
“It doesn’t break the skin,” She said. “And there’s no danger of fluid exposure.”
Ehlers said she sold her house and car to launch the project, has been using this month’s World Cup to distributing the female condoms in the various South African cities where matches are taking place. After the trial period, they’ll be available for about $2 a piece.
Great idea Dr. Ehlers bravo. I have two major concerns though. When does this woman put on such a device? I’m assuming this would be worn by women who are about to be raped by men who don’t mind their victims stopping to put on a contraceptive device? Or is this something a women in high risk would have to wear all the time?
Secondly, so this condom latches on to the man’s penis who is attempting to aggressively rape a defenseless women. What then? I would imagine he pulls out, sees the device and proceeds to unless that tension on her violently. All I can see is it buying the potential victim a few seconds but in the end the victim may wind up losing her life instead of just her dignity. SOUND OFF: Do you think such a product can work?

Good idea in concept, but I don’t think it would work out in practice.

First – I’m sure that when it’s in it has some part of it exposed. The men will just learn to look for it and will remove prior to assaulting the woman.

Second – since it’s a ‘wear all the time’ thing, it would have to be removed for restroom visits, etc. At this point there is the question as to whether they reuse the same device or use a new one.

Neither is a workable option. If they reuse the same one, there are a whole list of long-term infection risks, and (if this is for the poorest parts of Africa) they won’t have the money to keep buying new ones. (there’s already the same problem with them affording medicine, food, etc).

YOU SHOULDN’T UNDERSTAND unless you plan on going to prison anytime soon. Now, THAT’S when installation is gonna be a “prickly” process. But I must say this, Juan: this woman ain’t gonna be on Sesame Street anytime soon. The visual from the photograph is a bit much.
This may slow down vaginal rape, but rapist don’t give a damn they will get down with oral and anal, i doubt this will stop rapist, but its a good idea and hopeful it will put a few guys in the hospital…

This may decrease rapes but increase physical harm to the woman. I can imagine the amount of asswhippings handed out over this.

This device may or may not work, but it is great to see that people are out there innovating. All of you make some valid points.
Honestly as a woman I don’t want to use that and I have been raped. Its really just unrealistic!! Like Malcolm said what about infections and having to buy more. And I get angry is my husband or a woman I choose use their damn gums too hard down there…lol…she expects me to protect myself with a prickly condom up my cooch. The thought of that sounds just way too damn uncomfortable for me. I respect and understand the idea BUT I’ll pass. I keep my pocket knife and mace thank-you
Lol. Chelle I agree. This was a good idea although it wasn’t thought all the way thru. I would love to see the after effects of a man who comes into the ER with his penis trapped by a lock jaw condomn…I will be no gud. Plus I would make them wait for a couple hours to reflect on what they did, if I was the doctor that had to remove it.

99% of guys that will have this trapped on their junk will be guys with pyscho girlfriends.
I don’t see this as a way to prevent a violent rape but I think females in college that are afraid to get date raped are the only logical people that can use it.
