David Banner’s Rant: Media’s ‘Terrorism’ Labels Are Racial Biased. (Hmmm)
The MISeducation of David Banner. Let the Racial Determination Committee convene!

@THEREALBANNER
At the risk of being proliferating stereotypes, I believe its safe to say that the roster of rappers over the years features a very low percentage of academic achievers. While the game is sprinkled with a handful of urban scholars like KRS-One, the truth is the emcees rocking Masters degrees are very few and far between.
So for some it may come as a surprise that the often shirtless rapper/ producer with a heavy Mississippi drawl whose first rap single was entitled “Like A Pimp” would be one of the select few. However, David Banner is that guy. The former Southern University Student Government President and Masters of Education recipient from the University of Maryland has always challenged those stereotypes bringing not only a more cerebral approach to Hip Hop but also expanding the boundaries of the culturals traditional understanding.
Frustrated by the media’s selective use of the word “terrorist” Banner recently wrong an op-ed to Ballerstatus about his thoughts.
April 19th marked the 15th anniversary of the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah building in Oklahoma City by Timothy McVeigh. While many gathered on that day to commemorate that tragic event, the act itself, and others like it, continues to shed light on a fundamental hypocrisy in American society. The hypocrisy in question is the refusal of the American public to apply the term “terrorist” to anyone other than Black or Middle Eastern, Islamic radicals.
The lack of application of the term “terrorist” to Americans or Christians
is certainly not due to a lack of evidence. For example, it would not be hard to recognize the brutal and destructive nature of slavery in America as institutionalized terrorism. Just as easy would be a recognition that groups
like the Ku Klux Klan and other Christian-based, White supremacist organizations have repeatedly engaged in terrorist acts. Add to this list the lynching of Black people and the genocide of Native Americans and we soon realize that domestic terrorism in the United States is as American as apple pie.Despite these historical realities, the refusal to label anyone other than Muslims as terrorists has recently reached epic, hypocritical proportions. So, when Middle Eastern, Islamic radicals, due to their hatred of the U.S. government, flew two airplanes into the World Trade Center on 9/11, they were rightly called “terrorists”. But when Andrew Joseph Stack, a White, American, software engineer, posted anti-government language on the internet then flew his plane into an IRS building in Texas, media reports simply described him as a “pilot” and a “tax protester”. When another group of Islamic radicals flew a plane into the Pentagon on 9/11, they were, again, rightly referred to as “terrorists”. But when John Patrick Bedell, a White, anti-government, conspiracy theorist opened fire in March of 2010 at the Pentagon injuring two, he was labeled in news reports as a “gunman” and the “Pentagon shooter”. We’ve even been told that there are supposedly Islamic “sleeper cells” secretly living among us waiting to carry out terrorist acts on U.S. soil. But when the all White, anti-government, Michigan based “Hutaree” were recently arrested for their intricate plan to murder a law enforcement official, then blow up the rest of his colleagues at his subsequent funeral, they certainly weren’t described as terrorists. Rather, they were portrayed in the media as an “anti-government” and “Christian-based” “militia”. These three instances alone are indicative of the bias inherent in the usage of the term “terrorist”.
Some may argue that the sole application of the term “terrorist” to Islamic radicals is due to the inordinate threat they posed to American society. This argument is easily dismissed by the facts. According to the FBI, between 2002 and 2005, there were 24 acts of terrorism carried out in the United States. Twenty-three of the 24 incidents were carried out by White, “domestic terrorists”. Similarly, the Department of Homeland Security issued a report in April of 2009 that detailed the resurgence of “Rightwing Extremism” in the United States. Specifically, the report stated that economic downturns, as well as “the election of the first African American president”, are two of the main reasons “driving a resurgence in rightwing extremist recruitment.” Going further, the report also noted that “the threat posed by lone wolves” and by white “terrorist cells is more pronounced than in years past.”
This Department of Homeland Security report came just after the killing of two Pittsburgh policemen by a rightwing extremist and only two months before the shooting at the Jewish Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC by James von Brunn, an avowed white supremacist. And for the record, neither the Pittsburgh nor DC gunmen were ever referred to as “terrorists”, despite their anti-government and politically motivated murders. Another excuse given for the one sided application of the term “terrorist” is that there is no clear definition of the term. This is also incorrect. According to the Code of Federal Regulations, terrorism is described as “the unlawful use of force and violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives”. As seen from this definition, all of the recent incidents cited above, as well as the Olympic Park bombing by Eric Rudolph, the actions of the “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski, and all of the 300 plus abortion clinic shootings and bombings between 1973 and 2003, fall comfortably within the established definition of “terrorism” by the federal government.
In closing, we are asked in the Holy Bible, “Why do you see the speck in your brother’s eye but fail to notice the beam in your own eye?” This is an admonition against hypocrisy and against holding others to a standard not met by ones self. The American public would do well to heed these words. By broadcasting the terrorist acts of others while omitting America’s own terrorist past and present, we create an artificial sense of self-righteousness. This artificial self-righteousness insulates the public from the dangers that White, domestic terrorists continue to pose to society. This insulation ultimately gives way to the “beam” in America’s collective sight; a blindness to these acts in the eyes of society. If not properly addressed, it is this blindness that will allow the future John Patrick Bedells, James von Brunns and Timothy McVeighs to make their terrorist mark on our society.
Given my the aforementioned high praise for Banner you’d probably think I’d agree with him. If you know me well you’d know that’s not the case….at least not 100%. I think his argument is overly simplistic and perhaps biased. I’m going to solicit some help from the Racial Determination Committee (RDC) on this one.
To call the KKK domestic terrorist would be the same as calling The Black Panther Party or even the Columbine School Shooters a terrorist faction. If you’re using the term in the most literal sense then yes, the organizations struck fear in the hearts of those around them. The same could be said about the DC Snipers, John Allen Muhammad, and Lee Boyd Malvo. If there ever was a domestic terrorist, those two would classify and yet they were black and the media didn’t identify them as such even though they were given the layup to do so with John Allen’s last name. All and all its not bias based on skin tone but rather an ideology based on what is different.
Honestly, I find the media’s use of the word “terrorist” to in fact be appropriate for the most part. Its a very broad term but one the American media has used to brand attacks against our country from a FOREIGN origin that challenge our way of life and make citizens scared. Its been 15 years since Timothy McVeigh bombed the Alfred P. Murrah Building in Oklahoma City some 6+ years prior to September 11, 2001. McVeigh’s ideals weren’t exactly foreign but more radical and based in revenge for the US Federal Govenment’s treatment of the entire Waco compound incident 2 years earlier. Had he been trained oversees instead of by our own military, I think more folks would be quick to brand him a terrorist although. But, to say McVeigh was NOT labeled a terrorist at least by some is completely inaccurate. I think what Banner fails to realize is that terrorism only became a mainstay in American vernacular after 9/11. Until then the attacks against America both foreign and domestic were very uncommon.
The truth is the media has used 9/11 and the imminent threat of its sequel to, intentionally or not, strike fear in the hearts of every American in cities around the country. We will no longer walk the streets with the same confidence we did prior to 9/11. We can no longer walk by the white house or carry finger nail clippers on a plane; all things we took for granted prior to that time. This new phenomenon is the worst act of terror there is. So while David Banner’s comments were well thought out, he may be trying a bit to hard, like so many out there, to find racist undertones in everything. What do you think RDC?

Wow. I think he is right on. European powers (ie. England, France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, The Netherlands) and now Israel, have carried out and condoned terrorism by its allies for years. However, it has seldom, if ever, been called by what it really is: terrorism, by the very difinition of the word. “According to the Code of Federal Regulations, terrorism is described as “the unlawful use of force and violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives”.
The latest example is what the Israeli military did to civilian protestors aboard that ship just a few days ago. Reportedly, nine dead. Then again, Israel has been murdering Palestinians with inpunity for decades. While the Palestinians have been branded as “Terrorists.” U.S.’s government officials’ hands are dripping Palestinian blood, as well.
If you repeat a lie often enough, it becomes real…
I’d tend to agree with your assessment of Israel. Because of the financial ties we have with them is why we’re the target of Islamic terror groups now. its all about money.
I think that he is right about the racist undertones. I also agree with you that not all domestic terrorists have been white. I will take it back to the civil rights movement. Who do you think committed the terrorists attacks on Dr. King and Malcolm X. I will bet you my pay check that the federal government did the very thing that they gave definition to. J. Edgar Hoover had Dr. King’s phone tapped and Malcolm said himself to Alex Haley that he did not believr that the NOI had anything to do with his harrassment in his autobiography. Mr. Banner is on point and it has downplayed on whites just as Bush’s debacle is being downplayed and hurting the President (just and example of whites not taking responsibility).
OH YES. Hoover was the Godfather or terrorism. I think you’re right especially in the case of Dr. King. This hysteria that his assassination caused in the black community can only be described as an act of terrorism.
By the way!
I have a right to be pissed at Bush. I am in Iraq for the second time because of him…
Take care of yourself bro. We’re definately supporting you and all the troops fam.
To further highlight my point on the terrorist israeli state, i just read on Yahoo news that they rejected the U.N.’s attempt to investigate what happened on that ship. Yeah, they rejected it, just as the U.N. can’t condemn anything israel does, due to the U.S.’s veto power. Israel feels they can do whatever the hell they want. And they do!
They have that thing rigged, man!
Everyone thinks that the U.S. is the ultimate superpower. Nah its Isreal and we’re just their henchmen doing all the dirty work.
