SOUND OFF: Are Us New Yorkers A Bunch of Arrogant Pricks?
No seriously. Is it me or do we carry a bit too much “Holyier than Thou” pride without regard for the world around us?
As the most prideful New Yorker, check that Brooklynite, there is on the planet this post is a very odd commentary but I figured I’d throw it out there.
The other day after the New York Metropolitan area was awarded the Superbowl in 2014 everyone here went nuts. The headlines in the newspaper was all about how the NFL was taking the Big Game to the Empire State. Just a day earlier, New Yorkers celebrated the annual right of summer, the civil war known as the Subway Series. Previous to that was the whole Lebron James debate and how it was basically a forgone conclusion that he would and I guess SHOULD become a New York Knick when in actuality there are many other teams including his current that provide a better fit.
Go back almost 10 years to 9/11 when after the terrorist attacks many New Yorkers acted as if the world should stop and wear a black ribbon for their loss although much of the world at large, especially in war torn nations suffers such casualty every day. Since then the unemployed Mayor Guiliani has survived on the memories of his “leadership” through those times and even launched a Presidential run albeit unsucceful.
The point I’m trying to make is what does everyone else think about us that doesn’t live here? Are we really the bunch of arrogant pricks with a grandiose sense of entitlement that I perceive us to be? While I think Brooklyn is the Mecca, God’s utopia I know the truth is most of yall could care less. I think the attitude comes from the fact that New Yorkers who feel New York is the best city actually haven’t ever really left. Have we actually seen the world to be credible experts to make that statement? I’ve never been to Paris, Rome, Sydney, London, Dubai, Hong Kong or Mumbai. Hell I’ve barely been to Staten Island who am I to call New York the best?
To try and figure it all out I was reading some articles about it online and one author very sarcastically offered his opinion on why New Yorkers are the way that they are saying “[we] are ostracized for their unique accent and melodramatic and loud mannerisms. This makes them insecure and they compensate with a superiority complex.” What’s your take? Sound Off the floor is yours.

yes. think is cuz yall have few rocks n trees n shit. not too many birds chirpin. all that hustle n bustle would make me an arrogant prick too. but when i can go over my boys crib n catch some crappie in the creek it makes all the difference.
ok explain what “crappie in the creek” is for us non Texans.
google crappie. its a kind of perch….
From Wiki: Pomoxis or the common name crappie (pronounced /ˈkræpiː/), refers to either of the Pomoxis species, both of which are popular game fish.
Yeah, New York ain’t been shit since Snoop came through and kicked the buildings.
lmao.
You hit the nail on the head when you said most New Yorkers that think it’s the best have never left. The thing is New York has so much diversity within itself that it feels like it’s own world. When they do leave they usually bring that arrogance and know it all BS with them. Some can deal with change but most just bitch and complain about not being in New York until they can afford to move back.
Good point. You see a lot of that in Atlanta and Florida.
Yup!!! My experience with it was in Florida.
Salute to Spike Lee though. Nobody reps NY harder!!
The new yorkers I’ve met were really fucking annoying, so yeah I’ll say that new yorkers are arrogant. TEXAS! We go hard too though!!!
everythings BIGGER.
I have heard people from other places, LA, South Africa, Ohio, Chicago, London, Moscow and the list goes on about not that NYC is “better” but its that for a city, theres “something” about it. Yes there are way worst off places. In the Congo in the last five years over 5 million people have been killed.
I also have been around a bit in the US and I know all to well how people are locale in their opinion of the world, we all can appreciate other cities but it means nothing to us.
I dont see NYC as the focal point of the world but rather its an extension of US culture. Most Americans are very self-centered in their view of the world. It makes sense that the worlds only super power largest city is as cocky as the day is long.
Good points. I was born in the D.R. and grew up in Harlem and consider myself both a Dominican and a New Yorker (funny, I never really considered myself an “American”). I’ve lived in the south for a few years and have been to many other cities in the U.S. Everywhere I’ve been, I’ve met many people who want to visit or move to NYC. It’s like their goal in life……As a little boy in the D.R. I remember the young people demonstrating, burning tires and dodging bullets, chanting “Yankee go home.” There was a deep resentment for U.S. policies and strong-arm tactics in Latin American countries…but then, many people still brave the Caribbean Sea waves in bathtubs to make it over here…and where do most end up? NEW YORK! I’d rather live there than anywhere else….
concrete jungle where dreams are made of…. the damn superbowl is gonna be in jersey not new york doesnt anyone seem to realize that. and the statue of liberty is in jersey not new york.oh and “absolut brooklyn” damn we go hard.
Why yes, I am.
I am a PROUD BROOKLYNITE!!!
And in my Marine Corps Days I made damn sure everyone knew where I was from. I even went the extent of “acquiring” a real New York Ave, Brooklyn Ave, & Flatbush Ave sign to place in my room when I was stationed in Cali for a year.
What place is better than BROOKLYN?!?!?
Name anything notable and BROOKLYN is there. Rap- Jay-Z, Boxing- Mike Tyson, Basketball- Michael Jordan, Jazz- Lena Horne, Art- Jean-Michel Basquiat, Magic- David Blaine, Directors-Spike Lee, Mel Brookes, Politics/ Civil Rights- Shirley Chisholm,…. the list can go on forever!!!!
ANYTHING NOTABLE BROOKLYN IS THERE, INCLUDING MY HEART!!!
The Cosby Show, BROOKLYN!! The Honeymooners, BROOKLYN!!! Do The Right Thing, BROOKLN!!!! Crooklyn, BROOKLYN!!!!
WHAT MORE CAN I SAY!?!!?!?
