Would You Wear ‘A Bathing Ape’ If B.I.G. Said It Was Cool?
Don’t front if you realized the flyest and best that ever did it was rocking BAPES you would have too.

@NotNotoriousBIG @ABathingApe_US @bapenerd @BapeNigo
If I said it once, I’ve said it a million times, hip hop doesn’t belong to the Nation any longer. She’s dating the younger kids now a days. She’s got them all dressed up in ultra tight designer European cut jeans strapped to their thighs with a belt accented with a pair of BAPES.
When I first became aware of BAPES or A Bathing Apes In Lukewarm Water (Yes, that is the full name) it wasn’t more than a few years ago when Hip Hop’s fashion foward artists like Pharrell Williams started rocking it. However, BAPE, the brainchild of Japanese designer, Tomoaki “Nigo” Nagao has actually been around since 1993, during Hip Hop’s Golden Era.

So while Nigo was toiling in the underground/ urban fashion circuit trying to gain notoriety for his line, a similarly ambitious emcee from Brooklyn, Notorious B.I.G. was emerging from the streets of Bed-Stuy. So while the large flashy logos of Tommy Hilfiger, Polo even FUBU dominated the scene during those years, perhaps we failed to notice and recognize that the greatest of all time and the flyest, Notorious B.I.G. himself was years ahead of his time and had actually blazed a path for the current shepherds of Hip Hop who weren’t yet outta diapers. It begs the question, if BIG indeed endorsed BAPE as hard as artist get behind labels today would you have worn BAPES in High School? to the club? Philly Greekfest? Freaknik? Interesting huh?

Nope.
The brand a little too,…. “urban”, for my liking.
That goes along with a lot of these brand that target the “urban” market.
I kinda like LRG though, even as I would never purchase anything from the brand.
The brands kinda makes me feel… stereotypical… to say the least…
wow. nice dish even i dint know that. but as far as Bape its a lil cliche’ i feel where you coming from.
I was most interested in your response ca$h. I wasn’t sure if you were a BAPE Supporter or not.
yeah i like the PLAINER bape shit. BAPE is Kinda like BBC on Extacy…lol. its meant to be in your face. i love Nigo’s designs and the spinoffs like KAWS and Baby Milo more than Bape. and that shit cost WAY too Much. and we had so much fake Bape down here in Dallas when it first popped. the Fake shit make the real shit LOOK Fake…
Na. never liked BAPE merch. the shoes look like AF1 knock-offs. couldnt ever get in to the clothing line either. many of the designs seemd to ‘busy’ for my tastes.
Just like any other clothing line, fashion outfits, or whatever. People are going to and should wear what they want, when they want and how they want…as long as you arent offending anybody, or what have you.
It really shouldnt matter what famous rappers, or singers, are wearing. That is trying to be like the (JONES). To think people should be similar to or want to wear what other people are wearing, because they have a lot of money, and or they were in a movie, after they made a rap album, or what ever example you want to try and make up is ridiculous, ALL THAT MATERIALISTIC BEHAVIOR IS NOT MATURE
nah i wouldnt wear just biggie said it was koool dnt knw much bout the clothes but the shoes i like, i would wear something because i like it not because of celebrity i wear what i feel comfortable in how i like because that the way i want to wear i may wear baggy clothes but not the same makes as everyone else am not into all that prada and gucci shit i prefer lrg, live mechanic, artful doger, enyce n others
I check for Various “Brand name” clothing companies’ products. I don’t were clothes from a specific brand because of “allegiance” necessarily lol. It’s my opinion that I can find a few if even just one piece that will make my outfit no matter what brand. I check for quality and consider the price and versatility. I have never made a BAPE purchase, but seen a few nice pieces that weren’t as dam loud loud as most of their stuff! JUAN How you dig up the B.I.G. wearin BAPE in ’93 ..good dig!?? I think FO-SHO erybody would have been on it just like everybody wanted to wear them FO-sachie (versace) and COOCHIE (coogie) offerings big was rockin’. The subject of “if BIG wore BAPE would you have too?” makes me think of that ICE CUBE lyric ..”Stop givin juice to the Raidaz, cause AL DAVIS , never paid us!” I wonder if these Rappers are gettin paid like they can for all BRAND NAME drops to that they feel make them sound credible???
You like that right Geno-ski?
i don’t care if big or anybody else was rocking them i know i personally wouldn’t have worn them. that ain’t my style…but juan do you think if it was 1993 we would do it then? even if big was rocking bapes? lol
I think it was a diffrent time. Cross colors had just faded and we were heavy into the Polo, Tommy Hillfiger even C.H.A.P.S. gear at that point. Urban apparel hadn’t yet made its mark. Even Phat Farm was some what frowned upon at that point. Rappers hadn’t yet discovered the profitability in promoting the free threads they were given.
.
I think others are missing my point. I’m not saying we should have worn BAPES because B.I.G. did but I think people underestimate perception. I’m sure those of you who have written off BAPES would find some pieces in the collection (perhaps not the kicks) that you’d find acceptable if it wasn’t BAPES label. That said if B.I.G. wore those pieces deemed acceptable, I’m sure Nigo would have designed to the demand. Today the demand is a little louder than what we’re used to. I’d wear that hoodie B.I.G. wore in the pic.
im so lovin this fashion post.
i was thinking that same thing when i saw the hoodie! i would wear it too but as far as the kicks go, i doubt it.
this article is ghey, BIG was about rocking timbs and had a gritty style not some tight jean f@ggy sh1t..
