W/ Health Care Bill Wrapped, Is Obama Getting Lazy With Immigration Reform?

Posted by Juan

If you want to be the best you can’t act like the rest Obama. Lets get “On to the Next One”

Arizona Protest
@BarackObama #Immigration
Now that the ink on the Health Care Bill is dry and the arrow on the economy seems to at least be pointing upward (save a major investor error snafu on wall street yesterday) , President Obama has turned the page to the next item on his check list, Immigration.  In recent months, the immigration debate has heated up with several well attended rallys organized not just in Washington but around the country.

Earlier this week I posed the question whether tougher Immigration Laws would prevent would-be terrorist attacks like the botched car bombing at Arizona.  I wasn’t surprised there were arguments from both sides as I myself as the son of Dominican immigrant is split on the issue.  One state widely effected by the debate is border state, Arizona which as I noted in an earlier post about Chuck D‘s boycott of Arizona which has taken a hard line against immigrants requiring them to carry paperwork confirming their status.

Arizona state resident and one of the Highbrid Nation own, Brian, sent in the picture above from a recent rally he was eyewitness to.  Unlike my humorous one about immigration reform butting a shortage on burritos, this man’s sign is what we call “REAL TALK.”  It shows that while the issue might not effect those who don’t live in border or heavily immigrant populated states, for those like Brian, tensions are at an all time high.

In response, The President said Wednesday at a Cinco de Mayo celebration at the White House that he wants to “begin work” this year on legislation overhauling the nation’s immigration system addressing his campaign commitment to Latino voters and lawmakers.

Here’s the problem.  The President is only promising to “begin work” on legislation this year and if the arduous process of working with the GOP on the health care debate is any indication, getting a deal done and a bill signed may take the remainder of his term in office.

Look I believe given the circumstances, The President has done an incredible job.  Getting that stubborn Congress to get anything done is a feat worthy of praise let alone a major piece of legislation like the Health Care Bill.  Additionally it looks like the economy is getting healthier although a long way from normal.  But I think Obama may need a reality check.  Just because things aren’t getting worse…doesn’t mean their good.  He inherited a country in turmoil and more is and SHOULD BE expected of him.
He can’t be at the closely watched Cinco de Mayo celebration addressing this hot button topic in one breath and posing for Twitter Twitpics with this clown Pharrell seconds later.  I know I’m being over critical but this is no ordinary dude and perception is everything.  Lawmakers in the Congressional Hispanic Caucus have been complaining he wasn’t doing enough and I tend to agree.
Obama and Pharrell

I was disheartened last week when he said “there may not be an appetite” in Congress to deal with another hot-button issue immediately after the grueling  health care and financial regulation.  THAT’S A COP OUT.  In his innauguration address he said “We will not tire, We will not falter, We will not fall” not fail”  Well it sounds like he needs to revisit that speech and soon.  Time is running out with midterm elections looming in November lets hope there’s enough time left on the legislative calendar to take up this contentious issue.

Not criticizing, like the spotter on the bench press I’m just giving motivation.

    You see…this is why I was all about going to Canada. Then I watched the Boondocks episode and then that’s what Huey wanted to do…I don’t want people to think I am dick riding.

    Juan,

    This is and always will be a sensitive subject, but I would have to go with the President on this one and allow Congress to catch that second wind. They are a very lazy bunch and they really need time to adequately address this issue (without offending legal immigrants). No one (who legally has the right to reside in this country) should have to walk around and prove they belong here, but I do believe that those who don’t belong here need to be held accountable and get legalized (not shipped back).
