Uncle Luke Tight W/ VH1 Hip Hop Honors Nod: ‘No Respect For My Business Gangsta’

Posted by Juan

In the latest Pioneer Diva Tantrum, Luke’s upset that VH1 wants to glorify his too hot for TV past with 2 Live Crew.

Rap’s original sex pot, Luther Campbell is seething hot over what would otherwise be an honor after being selected to be commemorate on VH1′s upcoming “Hip-Hop Honors.” While its virtually impossible to think of Luther Campbell without thinking of his moniker “Uncle Luke” and his oversexed imagery characterized by his days with his often censored group, 2 Live Crew, Luke thinks VH1 is selling him short.

In a recent VIBE.com interview, Uncle Luke went in.

This year I’m supposed to be honored, but they only want to honor me as a member of the 2 Live Crew,” Luke Campbell said in an interview. “They want to honor Master P for his business savvy and they want to honor Jermaine Dupri for his business savvy and I’m kind of offended by that. We have basically been talking it out, but it’s just so sad that people just don’t know my history. They try to link me with a group and not see me as a businessman.

Luke Records was the first independent black owned record company owned by a rapper. We were the first to distribute our own product. There’s just so many first…For an organization like VH1 to try to say I’m just the first person to go to the Supreme Court over music censorship and be a part of the 2 Live Crew…I told them the other day, ‘Just go f*ck yourself.’ We were even the first to have a street team…I don’t want to be a part of it unless you honor what I’ve done in a proper way. I’ve never asked anyone to do anything. But when you ask me to be a part of something, I’m not going to let you disrespect me.”

Look, while VH1′s Hip Hop Honors has been an excellent homage to the tradition of Hip Hop’s music it hasn’t been without its controversy.  DJ Kool Herc was visibly tight at the shenanigans displayed during his show and Flavor Flav was none too happy about how he was depicted as a coon during his celebrity roast.

Like I said last week I believe in my rant about KRS-One, the problem with the pioneering rap cats is they’ve been forgotten to some extent by the younger generation and its made old heads a little cranky.  While they’re right in the fact they don’t get the respect they’re due, leave that to guys like me to and more reputable media outlets to say because you look crazy when you’re waiving your own flag.

These mufukkas used to have orgies on stage!!!
WTF?! The Sugarhill Gang had the original rap album! where is their recognition/honor? If they had some ceremony on VH1, I missed it…
2Live Crew was in during my radical revolutionary days; I hated the crap they did…

Give the f@cking baby his bottle!!

He’s worried about being correctly honored? He’s lucky that a major media outlet is honoring him or Hip-Hop as whole.

Accept your award, give your speech thanking God for all the booty shakers on stage, then promptly sit the f@ck down.

Luke has a point. Without him taking his stance for free speech, there wouldn’t be the “open mic” for MCs today. He also created or at least magnified an industry for those that are visually appealing- “the video girls”. So give it up for Luther Campbell and The 2Live Crew!
