SOUND OFF: Who Is The Greatest Hip Hop Producer of All Time?
As Vibe.com launches its latest bracket tournament style competition to crown the best, I want to know what the Nation thinks.

@vIBEMAGAZINE
The recently relaunched Vibe magazine’s online destination, VIBE.com has posted the latest installment in their NCAA Tournament/ Bracket Style poll to determine who is the the “Greatest Hip-Hop Producer of All-Time.”
“As hip-hop’s advanced from looped beat breaks to crisp samples and drum machines, the producer has laid the foundation for a constantly evolving hip-hop genre. Now, you’ve got the chance to decide once and for all who’s the best behind the boards,” Vibe says on their website.
Greats such as Dr. Dre, Kanye West, The Neptunes, Timbaland, Teddy Riley, Marley Marl, J Dilla, No ID, DJ Premier, Havoc, Dame Grease, Alchemist, Cool & Dre and a host of others will compete against each other in series of rounds with the winner of each (at least partially) decided by the fans. There are 4 brackets (regions) titled Soul Sample, Boom-Bap, Mass Appeal and Hometown Sound.
But I’m impatient and often times given the imperfect seeding in these types of set ups there are upsets and early round matchups among juggernauts. So as a former producer myself, I was curious to know who YOU think is the Greatest Hip Hop Producer of all Time. For me the choice is simple…DJ Premier now its your turn to SOUND OFF!!!

PREMO, PREMO PREMO REAL HIP HOP, PETE ROCK A CLOSE SECOND. IF WE TALKIN MAINSTREAM DRE TOPS THAT LIST
That is really tough. If we are talking straight up raw hip hop, I’m gonna have to go with RZA with DJ Premier being a very very very close second. If you asked me this again later I’d probably say it the other way around. So it’s definately on of those two.
the rza rector… if ur a hiphop fan this man has to be at least in ur top 5..then dre…neptunes…kanye…preemo. timbo is way overrated
Timbo. Mass Appeal. HANDS DOWN.
Primo is still boss hog. Rza is up there too. Rza is more current. Premier is good. Hmmm….So are the beatminers. The list is long. And no…not Kangay aka sample-guy extrodinaire
This is a really good question. Tough one. Almost like asking what’s your favorite movie of all time…ummmm Kanye? Dre? Timbo? Just Blaze? Neptunes…
Take your pick.
Kanye….
Final Four without brackets
Kanye
Dre
Premo
Rza
Thats the list
All of u all r on the pizzipe . Dr.Dre should be in the the Top 1 if and when he actually works but his overall resume’ is all classics xxxcept 4 the Firm flop.DJ Quik, Warren G, Ant Banks, RZA, Timbo, Primo, Just Blaze, Erick Sermon, Kanye West, Pharrel . On the real tho Dr.Dre so stop bullshit’n ya self.
Ant Banks? GET REAL
Pharrel and the Neptune’s, Teddy Riley, , Only because all the other producers everyone just named (Kanye West, Timbo, RZA, Erick Sermon, Just Blaze, Dr. Dre, Premo,) all sample real heavy. None of these producers make hot original music that are hits. The Neptune and Teddy Riley also sample but most of there stuff are oringinal tracks. They are like the Quincy Jones of are Generation.
Everyone not going to agree but the facts are the facts
WHEN I FIRST READ THAT I WAS LIKE WHOA. BUT TEDDY DID SO MANY PROJECTS ITS CRAZY.NEPTUNES:
EVENTHOUGH THER”RE ORIGINAL THEY DONT HAVE ENOUGH, NO BODY OF WORK. JAY Z AND CLIPSE ISNT ENOUGH. I CAN ONLY NAME ABOUT 5 OR 6 HO TRACKS
You got a good point. Who is best with the least amount of sampling? The list is real short, if that is the case.
My list is not in any particular order;
Premier, Rza, Teddy riley, Pete Rock, Dre, Kanye, Hi-Tek, the Beatnuts kept NY on lock for a minute, Eric B.
And you can’t forget DJ Khaled…. He the Best!!! Hahahaha!!
Kanye… straight bangers… i’m younger than most of the nation though so idk much about RZA…
If you don’t know then you better ask somebody @ auchamp22. Or better yet, go spend some time on YOUTUBE looking at old RZA stuff.
As for me personally, PREMO is #1 with Pete Rock a close second. Just Blaze is in there, I’d throw in Swizz. And my uncle BEAT NIPPLE! He’s a beast… lol
thatd be real hard to say. what is the criterion for this kind of ‘contest’??? cant just go off of my opinion bc then its a tainted and biased contest.
