President Obama To Get Another Shot At Supreme Court Selection As Judge Stevens Retires

Posted by Juan

I wonder if he’ll appoint Judge Mathis to the High Court.

Stevens

89-year-old Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, the court’s oldest member of the high court has officially announced he is stepping down in late June or early July at the completion of the courts session for the summer.  Although hinted at since Obama first assumed office last year, he formally announces his retirement 11 days before his 90th birthday. Stevens was appointed by Gerald Ford in 1975 and is the oldest member of the Court, and the fourth-longest serving justice in the Court’s history.

Stevens, commonly believed to be one of the court’s more liberal judges will make the second judge President Barack Obama will seek to replace after he chose Judge Sonia Sotomayor to replace Justice David Souter less than a year ago.  While most President’s are granted the opportunity to replace one or two judges during their tenure these two very early departures give Obama the chance to reshape the nation’s highest court and subsequently mold the course of important decisions for generations to come.

However the selection will be no easy task.  Already under fire for his Health Care Reform campaign, his selection is likely to be met with intense opposition no matter who he nominates.  While he won’t be replacing a conservative member of the court, the Republicans will likely try to use it for political gain. I’m pulling for Judge Mathis to fill his spot.  I’M SAYING, what’s wrong with having a TV judge on the Supreme Court.

I think I’m to the point where I’m going to have to admit that I was wrong on something political.
    .
Back during the campaign, when Obama had won the nomination but Hillary STILL refused to get out, I had a theory that they worked out a deal where in exchange for her getting out of the campaign he would name her to a seat.
    .
At the time I speculated that it would be Ruth Badar Ginsburg’s seat; but at this point I don’t think he would name her (Hillary). But… we’ll see.
