SOUND OFF: Should Good Friday Be A National Holiday?
America Goes to work as the Christian Faith celebrates the holiest of days. What gives?
Clearly, Highbrid Nation is not the platform to open regular religious discussions. Even I can recognize the hypocracy in that but I thought about this one in particular question yesterday as I realized so many businesses and even schools still remain open on Good Friday.
Today, Christians, even very imperfect but devout ones like myself observe “Good Friday” the day the faith recognizes the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Growing up, I always fasted on this day to recognize the sacrifice that Jesus made. It truly is the defining of holidays in the Christian Faith, perhaps even more so than Easter, the day of Jesus’ resurrection and certainly more than Christmas, a day when nearly the entire universe shuts down.
So why no love? Why is that in New York at least, yeah while alternate side of the street parking might be suspended, the city’s college school system remains open (although the students are on spring break.) The fact remains Good Friday is not even remotely observed as a National holiday.
So although this might not be the platform for such discussion, I’m sure there are quite a few christian members of the nation as well as those of other faiths who I’d like to chime in. SOUND OFF! Should Good Friday be recognized as a National holiday?
FILED IN Need to Know

I’m a big fan of JC, but I’m still going to have to say no to a national holiday for Good Friday.
.
The US Constitution frowns upon strictly religious holidays. Easter is always on a Sunday, so that’s not a problem; and if they tried to do away with Christmas there would be a riot; but above that, it would be a hard push.
.
Consider for example: How would we feel if they made any of the several Islamic holidays national holidays? Now consider how a Muslim would feel if we created a national holiday for a religion that they don’t practice?
.
I continue to believe that faith is a very personal experience. Free Will and the US Constitution both suggest that we should not force our beliefs on anyone against their will.
.
On a side note, growing up Catholic my brother and I always questioned the term “good Friday”. If you ask me, it doesn’t sound too good to me.
Although it is worth noting that as a carry-over from times when Christian holidays were enforced, the stock market is still closed on Good Friday.
I have no problem working on Good Friday,i understand what the day means and holds.Just like Christmas. I am a christaian, i was brought up in the catholic church and then i left the catholic church to join a baptist church, hoildays are just that, a holy-day. I celebrat hoidays differnt now than i did when i was a kid. Each hoilday is differnt than the other. I understand that there are people that don’t beleive in God and to make Good Friday a national hoilday would not work.I do beleive in God and i do have a personal relationship with God but to make it a national day off does not sound right. It’s bad enough how we celebrat christmas with all the material and crazy spending.I wonder if Good Friday was a national hoilday how we would srcrew that up.
You think so? You mean Easter WASN’T about some rabbit coloring eggs and eating chocolate?
If it means another day where I’m paid not to work; I’m all for it.
The heaven and the earth was made in seven day, and on the seven day HE rested. This was GOD, the father. His SON came to earth to die for our SIN.I believe that, that day is speical. YES make that day a holiday. And being in this country, we need to show other religion that this country is found on CHRIST JESUS belief. NOT man. I say were are the follow of CHRIST JESUS.
