NAS: ‘If I Ruled The World’….I wouldn’t Have Dropped Out Of High School

Posted by Juan

FRAUD ALERT! Whose he kidding? He aint once thought that his lack of eduction held him back from anything.

Nas

During a recent appearance at the National Keystone Conference for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America in Pittsburgh, Nas spoke to 900 high school students about the importance of education and staying in school. Perhaps realizing a hypocrisy in his message, the Queens emcee himself acknowledged his decision to drop out of high school as one of his life’s biggest regrets.

“The reality of it is, you need to keep educating yourself, and I wish I had stayed in school,” he said.

In response to Nas’ appearance, Frank Sanchez, the Vice President of the Boys & Girls Clubs corporate relationships told the Pittsburg’s Post-Gazette he supports the message Nas was trying to kick.

“This is an incredible message, to have someone who succeeded so much in their life, but there is still a void.” he said.

I’ve got a major problem with this and perhaps this is a long-standing gripe I have with Nas.  Dude has always been on this feed the kids, heal the world, meta-physiological spiritual positivity ish.  But its all smoke and mirrors.  Pull the curtain back and lets see the real Wizard of Oz (Queensbridge)  If graduating high school was his biggest regret he would have handled that by now.  Lets be real!  We’re not talking about a doctorate its a G.E.D.

I don’t have kids but I wouldn’t want my nieces and nephews listening to this garbage.  Yeah he might stand up there and preach this good sermon but the fact is he got in the game back in ’94, made buckets of dough and never once did he feel that not having a diploma held him back.  THAT’S REAL!     I’m not mad at that.  No Boys & Girls Club is gonna support that however.

Nas has had 9 albums under his belt, many of which still sit in my music library and he made it happen without graduating High School.  He proved that sometimes a practical or street education can outweigh a scholastic one.  But the moment you sit up there trying to say otherwise to make it look good for the cameras and the mommies and daddies you’re putting on a front.  Nas you can be such a fraud sometimes.  Stay behind the mic, record your music and stop trying to pull the wool over my eyes.

All i need is one diploma.

I feel you Juan. Consider this, tho:
Even with the success he has had, he can still regret not having completed H.S. A GED is not the same thing and as an adult, with everything that goes on in an adult’s life, especially one with as much money as he has, it can be difficult to put everything aside and prepare for a GED exam and then take it. In a moment of introspection, he seems to regret (and miss) the simpler days of beeing a teen and not having the pressures he has now and just being in H.S. and having fun, completing it……maybe that is it…
personally speaking, I dropped out of college after 3 years in and went to work. For 18 years, I worked my tail off at many different jobs, I’ve become successful and very well respected at my craft. Although I had my state paperwork straight, I still lacked a college degree. This always bothered me and it also prevented me from being promoted/getting a better job. I returned to college and completed in two years, while working 56 hour-weeks. I earned my degree in 2008 (20 years after I was “supposed” to get it). I wanted to do it before that, but “stuff” kept getting in the way, and the years have flown by.
Sounds like he needs to stop and “just do it.” Before he knows it, 18 years would have gone by.

    Hey Juan,

be honest. Are you really saying kids shoud drop out highschool?

I mean, if you don´t have a diploma, you are nothing. You may earn millions, but the real people will always with power will always think ” he ain´t got a degree, f*ck him”.

Most of the kids get the wrong message and think that it is cool to dropout. But they wont make it and end at footlocker or Mc donalds and they will stay stupid and will be ruled by others.

They raise kids that are uneducated and the circle continues.
