Center for Disease Control: Half of Black Women Have Herpes!
48% of African American women between ages 14 and 49 have herpes simplex virus type 2 WTF?!
When I first saw this I immediately looked down as my jaw hit the grown. The Center For Disease Control released and extremely disturbing report out of Atlanta Tuesday that claims that 48% of African American women between ages 14 and 49 have herpes simplex virus type 2, the incurable sexually transmitted disease that causes painful genital sores.
Here’s an excerpt from the report.
About 1 in 6 Americans (16.2 percent) between the ages of 14 and 49 is infected with herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), according to a national health survey released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The study finds that women and blacks were most likely to be infected. HSV-2 prevalence was nearly twice as high among women (20.9 percent) than men (11.5 percent), and was more than three times higher among blacks (39.2 percent) than whites (12.3 percent). The most affected group was black women, with a prevalence rate of 48 percent.
Research shows that people with herpes are two to three times more likely to acquire HIV, and that herpes can also make HIV-infected individuals more likely to transmit HIV to others. CDC estimates that over 80 percent of those with HSV-2 are unaware of their infection. Symptoms may be absent, mild, or mistaken for another condition. And people with HSV-2 can transmit the virus even when they have no visible sores or other symptoms.
“Many individuals are transmitting herpes to others without even knowing it,” said John M. Douglas, Jr., M.D., director of CDC’s Division of STD Prevention. “We can’t afford to be complacent about this disease. It is important that persons with symptoms suggestive of herpes – especially recurrent sores in the genital area – seek clinical care to determine if these symptoms may be due to herpes and might benefit from treatment.”
I knew the statistics were worse than many people thought but this is downright alarming for real. Especially when you factor in the fact that people with Herpes are more likely to contract HIV! Granted its an indicator because it means they were likely taking part in high risk behavior to begin with but this is very sad. Please share with others.

This statistic is surprising but that is not all. Hep C is also something which is increasing in the black community. Co-infection rates are increasing across the country. I used to work with Bellevue’s Virology Clinic and I would see people who are eroding away from various diseases. All of which could have been avoided by numerous methods but it is the drug use phenomenon which increases this epidemic. Also, many black people do not see a physician unless they are hurting badly. Which increases the likelihood of passing diseases on to other people. Sad. Very sad. If you look at a map of NYC which shows reported diseases for each neighborhood, you will see that the majority of the reports are in black/hispanic areas (ex. the bronx, north shore of SI, uptown manhattan, various locations in BK).
Did you know Herpes is increasing at a faster rate in the white community than the black at a rate of 30% in the white community to approx. 8% in the Black.The report failed to mention that! also there are still a hell of alot more white people with Herpes than black. The black community is a minority in America, 50% of two is alot less than 10% of a 100,000!

Tell you what…hit me up when you are around 23rd and 1st in manhattan. I’ll take you to the virology clinic. Then the statistics mentioned above by JC will become real. 2 years ago, the percent was 36% of women overall and 48% blacks vs 14% whites.

IDK about statistics but I DO know that in my home city of Topeka Kansas the herpes rate has increased dramatically!! and I don’t know this by the statistics or the clinics I know this because there are women(and i use that term loosely) that talk about having it like its a good thing. I have heard girls talk about how they didn’t use protection because “that nigga got money so I don’t care what he got” REALLY. I moved away years ago but it scares me so much cause our city is just fading away. Between so many of my friends and family killing each other because they feel they have nothing to lose, women(and again…loosely) laying on their backs having babies to collect a check cause for some reason they think there is nothing outside of those Topeka walls, and that God forsaken triple 6 zip code that they refuse to change and that spreads across our city I’m almost scared to go home. I live in Missouri now and its not any better here but its NOTHING like the sadness of home. We already had a clap and AIDS problem now this SMH. All I know that as sexual as I am I love life(even the bad) and condoms are becoming almost irrelevant. I’ve locked these legs damn it!!
The 1 in 6 is extremely high on it’s own but I do believe that statistic. In my own personal life with females(female friends or otherwise) I’ve seen almost a 1 in 4 case, but HALF….HALF!!! Damn!!! That just seems too high. STD’s are a subject that NO ONE talks about, we as a society seem to talk about everything else. Great post.

Our young girl 9,10,11, are having sex and feel they can,t catch anything. Our young men are going with each other and so are our young women. I work in the medical field for 31 years, believe me it is bad. Young girls seeing there mother and grandmother sexing for money and they feel it is alright. God is angry with all this sex and no one is married. It is going to get worse, so use your big head because the lil one will kill you!!

the statistics from the CDC have been misinterpreted. It doesn’t say that 48% of ALL Black women have herpes it says that out of the people that they’re reporting on 48% of those are black women. I think it’s just the media sensationalising things but I think it’s up to the CDC to do the decent thing and clarify their data. It will be interesting to see what they do.
yeh thats where the confusion is coming from. People are hearing “half of all black women have herpes” but what the study is really saying is “half of all new herpes cases are black women” thats a HUGE difference!
Well I will add this story and take it for what it is, a story. I had a lot of interest in STD rates among African American women when I met a 20 year old that was HIV positive with 2 kids and pregnant with her 3rd. She was diagnosed at age 16. I found that 1 in 3 people have herpes, 33% of the population. I said to my very close friend you know that means between me, you and our other close friend one of us has herpes. She said I do have herpes. I have 3 CLOSE friends that have herpes. The problem is that only 1 of them notifies her partners. The other 2 have had relationships over the years and unprotected sex and didn’t notify the partner. Most people have only 1 outbreak or have them infrequently but you can still pass it. And its easier just to be quiet than to let your new partner know your secret.
True. bc who wants to hear that they got something?? especially from someone whom you were intimate with and it wasnt just a BC. i get tested just about 4 times a year. about every change of the season. im not that active either. its an experience to find out from ur doc that you dont have anything.
I find statistics in general to be a bit skewed. Maybe I just need to do my own research but I am curious as to where they are gathering this information and if it were gathered in a control environment which wouldn’t be something new. Either way, people need to start protecting themselves or refrain from having sex, although sex isn’t the only way you can get herpes.

Did you know that the finding were based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. 5000 people are used to represent the 304,059,724 people living in America. Someone please correct me if i’m wrong, but out the 12.8% of black people living in America, Black African women would only make up approx 7% and then from this the correct age range would have to be deducted. I seriously doubt if they surveryed more than 300 women yet they’ve come to the conclusion that the prevalence rate is 48% amongst all black women.If they didnt say that then they need to release a press anouncement to correct the confusion. I’m waiting for some firm answers from the CDC.
STD reports work differently. Doctors are required to report communicable diseases to the health department. The local health dept then reports to the state and the state reports to the CDC. So African Americans are actually underrepresented in STD data because we tend to not go to the doctor. This is not like census data or the nutrition survey you mention above. the stat is saying that 48% of reported cases are black females.

They can tell us anything. Trust no man’s information unless you verify it first. I think the CDC is lying. They want to control black women and decrease a lot of black babies being born. We all know that by 2024 the white population will be a minority. This is all a Racist ploy. Why is it always black people have more diseases and more of anything than anyone else. They need to show what they used to come up with these figures. Anyway if this is true, how did the black women get this disease, a man would have had to give it to her. So if that is the case with all the Black men going to white women, maybe they will end up taking the lead.

Chances are you shake a hand of someone with a disease every day. Herpes is only the tip of the iceberg.
As for white people (or as I like to call them, Poisons), they are disgusting as well. But the thing we must remember is that the statistic is of reported cases. Many white people have private doctors who do not report these things. Also, White people are less likely to be all out in the streets about their diseases (trust me…they are some nasty people). There are too many black people who don’t have health care or wait until it is too late to go get checked out. Instead of going to their personal physician, they go to some clinic which records these numbers.
This is not a conspiracy to decrease the amount of black babies born. The fact that nurses ask hispanic and black mothers numerous times before a c-section if they want their tubes tied, is a conspiracy.
But to get back to the point, black people…go to a doctor on a regular basis and stop going to clinics if you can afford it. Seriously. The clinics are horrible. and smells like death. I’m a bit annoyed with seeing black faces in there.

i have herpes and have been celibate ever since. there are a lot of people who have it and don’t know and those of us who do have it dont shout it to the rooftops either. 1 in 3 people have it and 60 percent of them don’t know it. condoms does nothng for herpes (do your research) because the legions more often than not are on area that the condom can’t cover. its not transmitted thru fluids, but SKIN TO SKIN contact. next time you see a “hair bump” or a “razor bump” go get it checked and get a blood test as the test can differentiate between type one and two. it amazes me that this is so hush hush. 80 percent of clinics can only test for herpes if the person has an active lesion. the actual blood test cost around 200 bucks. if you dont have insurance or cant afford the test, you’re screwed. i was dagnosed and had never had an outbreak. now i take valtrex-emal me if u need more info-charlyfran2008@hotmail.com
^^^ Not true. Private doctors are only required to report clap, gon, and syph, NOT herpes. So the CDC’s data on herpes and a few other stds/hiv comes from free clinics, which are disproportionally visited by blacks due to low-income. So it is only logical to conclude that some of the CDC’s conclusions are wrong.
We also have to take in the fact that blacks only make up 12% of the country and 95% of the time, humans only have sex with people inside their race. So, with every thing else being equal, stds/hiv will always spread faster in a group of 10 than it will in a group of 100.
Just my 2 cents.
