SOUND OFF: Should The NBA Be Able To Ban Caron Butler From Chewing on His Straws?

Posted by Juan

Strawgate

Caron Butler

One would think that getting out of Washington and the controversial hotbed laid by Gilbert Arenas and his guns in the locker room would be a good think for an NBA player.  But the newest Dallas Maverick, Caron Butler has come under fire this week for of all things, chewing drinking straws during games. Yes that’s right straws.

Caron

Known for being kind of quirky, Butler recently kicked his so-called addition to Mountain Dew describing withdrawal symptoms from his several bottle a day habit.  So while that decision was made on his own accord, the NBA has forced Arenas to kick his straw habit citing saftey.   According to ESPN, Butler on average chews up 12 straws per game and has been doing so since high school.  His preference are the strong McDonalds straws which he says calms him down during games.

So is the NBA scared Butler will finally chock on one?  Well not exactly.  The NBA and its scores of attorneys are looking to minimize liability in the event a fan might chose to emulate the NBA star and choke causing their legal savvy parent to in turn sue the league for perpetuating dangerous behavior.

Well the move backfired.  During Monday’s game against the Pacers the entire team showed solidarity by collectively chomping on straws of their own.  Even the hometown game announcers and Fans in the arena were encouraged to do so as well to show how rediculous the now league mandate is.

The League took offense and placed a call to Butler the following day.  So in your opinion is the league being too harsh?  I mean he’s been chewing these straws for years since he came in the league and how do their absence affect his performance?  SOUND OFF: Should the league lay low on Butler’s Straw? (Pause)

  1. Emerson Diaz says:

Really?! This is ludicrous (Mike Tyson voice).
The sad part is that the NBA is doing this in order to avoid a potential lawsuit. And in that sense, they are right! someone will probably sue for their kid choking on a straw. But, come on! people need to get a life and stop the foolishness! I would love to be the judge who throws that parent out the courtroom for their audacity in filing that lawsuit.

  2. Eric Smith says:

It is totally ridiculous, but on the other hand you do work for them. Their league their rules unfortunately, but what they did in the protest was smart, more people need to understand how to fight power in numbers versus loud yelling and acting a damn fool. Ultimately though if you don’t like the rules then don’t play the game……sucks huh.

  3. Malcolm says:

He was a straw chewer when they hired him, so I don’t know why they’re complaining.
    .
They should make lemonade…. Market a new line of NBA-approved chewable straws. (not to be confused with regular straws mind you. The official NBA straws have a little logo on them and cost $10 each)
    .
Once again… we need clearly defined boundaries between management and labor. With everything that’s going on, they’ve got nothing better to do than complain about him chewing straws??
