So despite Global Warming getting a major cool down with the snow storm in the Northeast, the Blogs were ablaze yesterday after it was revealed the pop star John Mayer not only loves the dark meat on the chicken but feels comfortable dropping “nigger” bombs at his leasure. In a recent interview for Playboy, Mayer let his guard down a bit.
Someone asked me the other day, “What does it feel like now to have a hood pass?” And by the way, it’s sort of a contradiction in terms, because if you really had a hood pass, you could call it a nigger pass.
Its a shame the interview is being overshadowed by this one word because its actually pretty dope. Then again unless you were a Playboy reader which I doubt there are many in the Nation, you probably wouldn’t have otherwise read it. He’s actually pretty open (naturally given its Playboy) where he talks about banging Jessica Simpson, called his dick a “White Supremacist” (classic) and how he had a thing for or with Holly Robinson-Peete and Kerry Washington. Its good stuff. I’ve included a clip from it after the jump.
So when blog police caught wind of his chose of words Mayer called the 2010 version of a apologetic press conference by issuing a statement on Twitter.

The word “NIGGER.” What’s it mean and who should use it? Does the black race own the copyright or does it extend to Hip Hop? Should John Mayer be scrutinized for his comments? SOUND OFF!
Here’s the excerpt from the controversial Playboy interview.
PLAYBOY: If you didn’t know you, would you think you’re a douche bag?
MAYER: It depends on what I picked up. My two biggest hits are “Your Body Is a Wonderland” and “Daughters.” If you think those songs are pandering, then you’ll think I’m a douche bag. It’s like I come on very strong. I am a very…I’m just very. V-E-R-Y. And if you can’t handle very, then I’m a douche bag. But I think the world needs a little very. That’s why black people love me.
PLAYBOY: Because you’re very?
MAYER: Someone asked me the other day, “What does it feel like now to have a hood pass?” And by the way, it’s sort of a contradiction in terms, because if you really had a hood pass, you could call it a nigger pass. Why are you pulling a punch and calling it a hood pass if you really have a hood pass? But I said, “I can’t really have a hood pass. I’ve never walked into a restaurant, asked for a table and been told, ‘We’re full.’”

PLAYBOY: It is true; a lot of rappers love you. You recorded with Common and Kanye West, played live with Jay-Z.
MAYER: What is being black? It’s making the most of your life, not taking a single moment for granted. Taking something that’s seen as a struggle and making it work for you, or you’ll die inside. Not to say that my struggle is like the collective struggle of black America. But maybe my struggle is similar to one black dude’s.

What can I say, it’s our own fault. We use this word with no regard and now we expect white people to police themselves. Do you really think it’s his first time using the “N” word? Context Context Context. It’s how one uses the word that will determine a possible beat down. In your article you are not referring to someone as an “N”, you’re recounting a incident and reporting on it….completely different.
“I hate the word Nigger” and “I hate Niggers” are two different statements. “Nigger Pass” is derogatory plain and simple. He could have easily said something else to express the fact that black folks feel comfortable around him.

The word “Nigger” was invented by white people. It has always been used by them as a tool to dehumanize black people. In my opinion, it should not be used at all. I’m a white guy, so I’ll never really understand what that word means entirely. I think I have an idea what it means, but I really don’t. And, I’ve used the word quite a bit in my life, to be honest. None of it malicious in any way. The worst way I’ve ever used it was once around a black friend I had in high school. I told him his brother was a nigger (because he always acted a fool). Needless to say, my friend wasn’t too cool with it. I think he understood what I was TRYING to say. But, even if I intended it only in the context that his brother was a fool, I hadn’t ever given any thought to what the word was and will (most likely) always be. Sure, the existence of the word did not originate as a derogatory term, but throughout history it devolved to be that way. And despite of the origin of the word, you (most likely) can never change the derogatory meaning it has now. So, long-story-short, I’m glad my friend understood me being a dumb-ass, and just politely told me to not use the word. He knew he wouldn’t try to kick my ass, but if someone else heard me use the word there was surely no guarantee they wouldn’t try. And, I continue to think about things like this every day. Just because I used to think calling people white trash or dumb-ass white crackers made me think using the word nigger around my white friends was okay. But, really, it’s not. And neither is it necessary to call people white trash or crackers. PEOPLE are dumb-asses or fools or ignorant, etc. What the fuck difference does it make whether they’re black or white or latino or asian? If they’re acting a fool, if they’re being jack-asses, if they’re being rude or disrespectful, then that’s what it is. This year my resolution, along with making Money, was to disassociate my blackness with everything negative. Everytime you hear someone talking negative about the impoverished, or people on public assistance, or people incarcerated, or the ill-educated, or single parent homes without identifying race, blacks automatically swear its them being spoken of, even if not being from the particular situation spoken of. I personally am, right now, considered middle class, I never had a negaive run in with the law, I personally never spent a food stamp, and am 11 years into a career field with a degree, and take care and live with my kids, all this being from East Flatbush, BROOKLYN!!! To offend me you have to poke fun at a personal attribute, and even then I’m thick skinned, quick witted, know hand to hand combat, so F@ck You, bring it!!! Go ahead White People or whomever, say Nigger all you want. The power is gone, you can’t stop me from voting, you can’t stop ME from becoming President. It is important to remember the past but we ARE the present, we are the result of the struggle.
There it is! Although I don’t like the word, hardly ever use it, I think we have much bigger fish to fry! Actions speak louder than words. We still live in a country that is institutionally racist. People run institutions. Their actions affect me a hell of a lot more than some ignorant person throwing “nigger” around.

Just cuz a white person has black friends doesn’t make it cool to toss that word around. Granted, it’s just a word and no one can have ownership of a word, Mayer having black friends should make him even more cautious about using it. But just bcuz he used it doesn’t make him racist; just a lil ignorant.
blogs are a waste of time. you’re just copying and pasting some other persons work (playboy) interview and acting like it’s yours. maybe people should actually subscribe to the magazine and read some of the story’s, articles, and of course the pictorials. and yes, I do subscribe to the magazine.
