ESPN Fires Ex NBA Player After Comments Suggesting Haitians ‘Should Use Condoms’
“Kudos on developing the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Your commitment to human rights, and birth control should be applauded.“
As news coverage dries up over the fallout from the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti’s capital some two weeks ago, former NBA lacky turned ESPN blogger decided to remind us just how neglected the country has been prior to the tragedy and little anyone cares.
Paul Shirley, who played only two games for the Hawks during the 2002-03 season has been moonlighting as a blogger for ESPN.com while playing oversees. Recently he inexplicably authored a rant on the website, FlipCollective about his thoughts on Haiti and basically why it and its people should be blown of the map for being far inferior to himself.
“I do not know if what I’m about to write makes me a monster,” he said beginning his entry.
Dude….you had me at hello. The comments which were part of a collection of opinion pieces on the website from a group of writers with different viewpoints.
In the rant he goes on to say “I haven’t donated a cent to the Haitian relief effort … And I probably will not.”
Why not you ask? Well apparently Shirley equates the Haitian people to the average homeless men on the street.
“I don’t think the guy with the sign that reads ‘Need Your Help’ is going to do anything constructive with the dollar I might give him,” Shirley explains. “If I use history as my guide, I don’t think the people of Haiti will do much with my money either. In this belief I am, evidently, alone.”
Shirley then prepares a sarcastic open letter to the people of Haiti essentially blaming them for the extent of the damage and making everyone pitch in to help.
Dear Haitians -
First of all, kudos on developing the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Your commitment to human rights, infrastructure, and birth control should be applauded.
As we prepare to assist you in this difficult time, a polite request: If it’s possible, could you not re-build your island home in the image of its predecessor? Could you not resort to the creation of flimsy shanty- and shack-towns? And could some of you maybe use a condom once in a while?
Sincerely,
The Rest of the World
Classy! Don’t include me in on your grave digging please! For his troubles, ESPN promptly gave him the boot yesterday. In a statement posted on its Web site, they said:
“He was a part-time freelance contributor. The views he expressed on another site of course do not at all reflect our company’s views on the Haiti relief efforts. He will no longer contribute to ESPN.”
Contribution. Interesting word. Sounds like he hasn’t offered a contribution to anything in a while. Not Haiti, not the NBA and probably society as a whole. See Ya!

Why was a bench rider getting the chance to speak anyway?
Exactly!
And I would like to call on the Racial Determination Committee to look closer into his rant: How come white people only rant about Black countries that are poor? I never hear about them railing against those former Eastern Bloc countries who have had mass-murdering dictators rule them for hundreds of years and are now impoverished, underdeveloped and havens of “terrorism” or “organized crime”.
That’s an excellent point. I think the RDC should examine white folks efforts to disparage our people in lue of their own under similar or the same circumstance.
Juan, as a “white folk”, sometimes it is better to just not open your mouth, you will then sound much more intelligent.
Fire Bun!
Well, I might get sh#t for saying this but I wouldn’t fire him. I do not agree with anything he said BUT…yup, here is the BUT. I’m sure there are people that actually think and feel that way and I’m happy to hear it. I’m glad he wrote that so we can address it. How can he know he’s wrong and be corrected if he never expressed himself to begin with? It’s easy to just assume that everyone looks at Haiti as a tragic event but some people don’t, and I think he just proved that ignorant people are out there.
Jerk, jerk, jerk, jerk!!!!
some valid points to me… i think some of you people just feel good about yourselves being able to donate money, you wouldn’t help if it required going there and doing it yourselves.
and that is why i did not donate…i donate to the people in the US that I see everyday. I’m not saying that I agree with everything he said, but I do think that donating in a time of crisis and not just beause is just a piss poor ass way to make yourself feel better. I feel just fine NOT donating my money. Another thing….if Katrina has taught us anything IF we really want to help then we should be there….HANDS ON. The fact of the matter is that none of us REALLY know where that money is going. This isn’t the first time that Haiti has experienced a problem and not the first time we have helped(maybe not to this magnitude) and the country is still poor as hell.
I agree with the cracka
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, as ignorant as they may be. However, what I find offensive is all that other shyt he said in that “letter” to the Haitians. He is an asshole for even writing that. Also, that earthquake killed almost 100,00 people and destroyed almost everything there. Almost everyone is homeless, there is no power, no healthcare, people who had jobs can’t go to work, etc. They were already the poorest country in the western hemisphere. This finished them off. To compare them to a homeless man begging for money on the corner is ignorant as hell and just plain F*up. Many people who have what they need can’t step outside their shoes for a second and look at others with empathy. F*ING EMPATHY! It doesn’t matter if it’s New Orleans or Haiti, Does it really? It’s people, F*ing dying, injured and can’t get medical care, hungry. Thousands of little kids whose parents are now F*ing dead!!! and some of you Mufuckas talking Shyt?! F*ck You!!!!
Ni###rs should wear condoms to help out mankind as a whole
THE EARTHQUAKE WAS PROBABLY CAUSED FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY THAT WAS TESTING NUKES UNDERGROUND OR IT WAS JUST SET UP BY THE U.S. GOVERMENT WHENEVER U DONATE MOST OF THE MONEY DOESN’T MAKE IT TO ITS DESTINATION ANYWAYS BECAUSE OF ALL THE CORRUPT THAT IS GOING ON RITE NOW. BESIDES THAT I THINK WE SHOULD TAKE CARE OF OUR VETERANS THAT FOUGHT FOR US AND HOMELESS AMERICAN’S FIRST. BILL GATES COULD REBUILD THAT WHOLE COUNTRY IF HE REALLY WANTED TO. THINGS HAPPEN FOR CERTAIN REASONS AND IM SURE THERE IS ONE BEHIND THE EARTHQUAKE.
FROM NATURAL DISASTERS TO SPORTS TEAMS WINNING CHAMPIONSHIPS I THINK MOST THINGS IN LIFE ARE SCAMS AND SET UP TO MAKE MONEY. THEY PROBABLY FIGURED AN EARTHQUAKE IN HATI WOULD CRUMBLE THE WHOLE COUNTRY. LIKE CERTAIN PEOPLE WHO DO DONATE THEY DO IT TO BE TAX EXEMPT AT THE END OF THE YEAR. SO SHADY HOW COULD U EVEN FEEL GOOD THEN WHENEVER, U DO DONATE . I GIVE HOMELESS PEOPLE MONEY FOOD WEED AND DRINKS ALL THE TIME AND THEY APPRECIATE IT
