Wrong Place At The Wrong Time: A Diary By Richard Coleman III Vol. 1 (Part 1)

Posted by Richard Coleman III

How a member of the Highbrid Nation became Federal Inmate #04479-087

Richie Coleman has been a periodic contributor to Highbrid Nation since its inception. Unfortunately he was recently incarcerated on allegations of Drug Conspiracy. He is currently serving time in the Federal Metropolitan Correctional Center in Lower Manhattan, NY and is awaiting trial.Richie is a father of one, holds a Bachelor of Science in Journalism and has lived a life not unlike many in The Nation. While spending time reflecting on his life both good and bad he has been keeping a diary/ memoir. He has asked that we share excerpts of his story in hopes that it will help prevent others from ending up in similar circumstance. These are his words…..

Richie

With three months in on a sentence whose length is undetermined yet is an unnerving time for me. In here young men go bald and gray in a matter of a few seasons dealing with uncertainty. My future hangs in the midst right before me and I have no control. The heroin package and the bullets found were under my control to some extent, but that is in the past. Now I am traveling through a paralyzed state of events where my actions can move nothing.

The stress in here is visible. Frustrations allow normally even tempered individuals to revert to unstable and bi-polar behavior. A half a pint of skim milk was the subject of a full blown match of testosterone last month. Just last week a half-pint was spilled over the outcome of a card game. Only this time the milk was blood. We haven’t heard if the guy is okay or not since he was rushed to medical.

Most days are a daze for me. I try to remain to myself but it is impossible. Everyone is cramped into such a small living area. I found solace in befriending a fellow inmate from the somewhere in the Bronx. He seemed cool and we shared the same type of interests in discussions. We’ll call him ‘KAHN’. Kahn and I play cards, watch Knicks games, and laugh at Freestyle Fridays on BET. I feel certain by hanging with one person I can avoid the drama.

I don’t know what its like to be an inmate but I have friends and family who are or have been inmates before. I can imagine how horrible life in prison must be. Keep your head up Richie and have in God that he’ll see you through this.
