Is Jay-Z Trying to Get Hip Hop To Downgrade to Jeep Status?

Posted by Juan

Could Jigga be saving money or is this a new more economical endorsement?

Jay in his Jeep

Jay-Z has been at the center of many trends over his storied hip hop career, everything from fashion to the brands of liquor people drink have been influenced by the rhymes and videos of one Mr. Shawn Carter.  But even at an advanced state in his career could he convince hip hop to downgrade their extravagant whips and get into a far more economical Jeep?  We’ll have to see.

    Good for him.

It’s around this time that I have to float one of my favorite theories:
    .
That if the biggest names in hip hop and rap would get together and write a series of songs about how cool it is to start your own business, work hard, save your money, and die in your sleep as an old man; they could, in one move, raise a generation of black billionaires.
    .
(with apologies for how rude I know this is)…. I know that dragging out the memory of Dr King and Rosa Parks once a year is good for making everyone feel good (can’t we all just get along :) ), but until you see a million-billionaire march, you’re never going to have any real progress.

Wow..very blunt but profound. I think you’re right about that. Hip Hoppers have always followed the pied piper. It almost seems silly but it could work.

I know that when people are raising their children, they like to say that anything is possible.
        .
But the truth is, most people AREN’T going to be sports stars. Most people AREN’T going to be music stars or famous actors/actresses.
        .
If a hip hop or rap star wants to write a song about hating women and packing heat, that’s their own business. They can take their big bag of cash, retire, and move far away from the little monsters they helped to create.
        .
But music and film have ALWAYS shaped the course of a generation. That’s why we have a “Jazz age” and a “rock and roll age” and a “rap age”.
        .
I feel so strongly about this theory that I’m probably willing to put my money where my mouth is. Maybe Highbrid can put on a contest or something; the best song wins a prize? (like maybe $500, and the writer keeps the rights)
        .
I pick the theme and general idea, you guys pick the winner (since I don’t know anything about music)

I’m going to bring this up at our next staff meeting. I like how you think.

I am a little confused by the term “downgrade” Juan. A little clarification?

  4. Emerson Diaz says:

Hey, Malcolm, you do realize that one billion is one thousand million, right? You’re throwing that number around like it’s chump change….up to mid-20th century, it was a big deal to be a millionaire. I don’t think inflation has thrown things so out of whack that one million 60-70 years ago would equal one billion today….soapbox, please: and I think that this materialistic mindset is part of the problem in the world in general and with us in the U.S. Nothing wrong with making or having money. Something very wrong with placing more value on money than on people or morality. Thus, the garbage we see on television, with people shaming the human race by acting like fools, at best…I could keep on ranting, but I’ll step down, for now… :-)
