Sharpton Pushes For NYC To Rename Street For Sean Bell
Activist urges City Council to honor victim shot 50 times by police
The un-caped crusader, Reverend (Captain African America) Sharpton is finally doing something I agree with this holiday season. He is spearheading an effort to rename a street in Queens, NY after Sean Bell, the unarmed man who was shot and killed by police on the morning of his wedding in 2006. All three officers were acquitted in the case. (As if I needed to remind you.)
Sharpton along with friend to the room, City Comptroller-elect John Liu, held a press conference in Harlem Sunday to petition City Council to vote for a resolution that would rename a stretch of Liverpool Street in Jamaica, Queens “Sean Bell Way.” reports NY1. The resolution passed the first major hurdle last week as the City Council Committee on Parks and Recreation voted in favor of the proposal. The full council vote is expected to pose a final vote before the holiday. Sharpton feels the move is the least the City can do to honor Bells memory and help the community heal.
“This has something to do with our community embracing and using as example a young man that was on his way to doing what was right and his community rallied around him. That’s what streets are named for,” said Sharpton.
I can’t believe its been so long since the shooting. Its still so fresh in my mind. I can remember the heated debates we had on Highbrid Nation especially following the acquittal.
As a life-long New Yorker, I can attest to the tension between the community and the NYPD which taxpayers actually pay to protect them. In what other environment does someone live in fear of the entity they pay to do a service for them? Oh yeah its called the MOB when then shake down the community for protection.
While I don’t fear police like I know some of my neighbors do, I can’t say with any confidence that they’ll ever have my best interest in mind. I could as easily have been Sean Bell. While its a terrible accident, I know that the relationship between the people and its law enforcement killed him and will kill again…and again until we stop it. Salute to Captain Al.

I think this is a good idea coming from Sharpton. It will give the community a chance to remember Sean Bell never forget what happened and what continues to happen. It may seem like a small step now but it could have a great impact later in life that we can’t even imagine. Kudos Al
I don’t know if this is a good idea. If that was my brother or son who was murdered, I wouldn’t want a street named after him, to remind me of how f*up shyt is…
Although I don’t live in NY now, I still consider myself a New Yorker, it’s where I grew up…and got my first broken nose, courtesy of the NYPD…I feel what you are saying, Juan. Especially about fearing those who are paid to protect us….
On the flip side: there are a lot of bad people in this world, doing some horrible things to other people. I think they are a very small minority in our cities. Some of them are cops. There are a lot fewer bad cops than bad people (by percentages alone)…I’ll take my chances dealing with a cop, rather than dealing with a random person that I have no clue about….odds are that the cop will most likely help me out…I’ll play those odds.
Honestly. I feel more comfortable around criminals than I do NYPD in uniform. Not because I feel they’ll shoot me dead like they did Bell but because they’ll lock me up or give me a citation for some dumb ish like Driving with a broken tailight or walking with my shoe untied. It sounds stupid but its just how I feel.
.
As for the street name. Are we to not build a 9-11 memorial in fear that it may remind the victims family of terrorism? I think the goal is to never forget their memory not what happened to them. I would agree if they named the street 50 shots way.
I think this is a bit foolish. Naming a street over some police BS is a waste of time. This is a consolation prize. F that. I want $$s. Please believe if any of my highbrid brethren falls to the police…I’m pushing for dollars on behalf of their families. A street means nothing. “Oh look, son. This street was named after your father…he was gunned down outside of a strip club”. Nigga please.
Gangsta Boo…what do you think?
Gangsta Boo: “Where dem dollas at?”
Well said, chicken head…well said
maybe this could be the first step towards the NYPD gaining the trust of it’s citizens. so far officials haven’t seemed to accept any responsibility for the mistake made and have not admitted that there are problems within the NYPD which need to be addressed. and by naming a street after Bell it will show some recognition that there are problems regarding the treatment of African Americans by the NYPD. however i don’t think it’s gonna happen as the police always have an excuse for their actions, no matter how bullshit it is.
NYPD could give two shits. Their belief is better to be judged by 12 then carried by 6.
