Kelis Hopes Her Sauces ‘Bring the Boys To The Yard’
Nas’ ex is now a certified saucier after completing certification at London’s Le Cordon Bleu
While some of us turn to the gym or perhaps the bottle to relieve stress, some of us (like myself) find refuge in the kitchen. Such is the case with newly divorced, Kelis. Get this, during her hiatus from music and since her battle with Nas she’s been training in London at the renowned culinary academy, Le Cordon Bleu and is now a certified saucier. I guess her milkshakes inspired her to reach new heights.
“I want to have my own sauce line,” she tells Idolater. “I love the lifestyle of a great meal. I think food, fashion and music all go together when it’s done right. I also want to get my sommelier certification, which I’m going to do eventually. I love the whole thing. I want to go back to school, too.”
Kelis says she first got into food after being dropped from her contract in 2007.
“I took some time off. I really just shut down, even to the point where I was like, I don’t want to sing anymore,” she said. “I went to culinary school and just regrouped and got my heart back for music.”
I’ve always kind of looked at Kelis as a wierdo but I really have to salute this move. Naturally I’m biased because I love cooking and would love to go to culinary school but I think more emcees and singers should look to different avenues to expand their empires than just a clothing line or putting out some lame beverage. Even celebrities need side hustles. Whose to say her line of sauces couldn’t make her more popular than her music career did. One thing is for sure though, we’ve learned from experience the copycats are coming. Expect 5-10 announcements of artists going to culinary school in the next 12 months…I bet money.

Sauce!
Good move Kelis, good move. I too want to learn the art of being a saucier. I made a Spicy Cherry Barbecue Sauce a couple of months ago from a recipe I found on the food network. Slathered that on some short ribs, Man O Man, So good makes you want to smack your mama!!! It got me thinking to do my own Fruit based Barbecue Sauce line. Just something in the back of my mind in case this Avionics thing get stale.
I’m happy she is making move in a direction that didn’t begin with her opening a restaurant. Good to know if she ever did venture in that direction she’d actually be able to help folk out in the kitchen.
More power to her, I wish her GOOD LUCK!!! PEACE!!!
I feel you, Juan! I love cooking too. Every time I have ever cooked for a woman, I get … well, you know what I mean….
Now that she is divorced, I would love to make Kelis’ sauce pot spill over, LOL!
SMASH!
